It's good to be an MSU fan right now

It's Bo's fault? Not your program for cheating. Right...

Also, you were sanctioned in the early 60's for violations during the late 50's.

I'd hardly say you were the "dominant" program in the 50's and 60's either; geez... click a couple Wikipedia articles before you start poking away at the keyboard like a 6 year old. MSU finished first in the conference 3 times, and finished 3rd or worse 10 times from 1953-1969. programs that had as many or more Big Ten titles during the same time period: Ohio St. (6), and Iowa (3).

I bet you majored in "Revisionist History" at MSU. they have a lot of screwy disciplines there. It's absurd how specific their degree granting programs are. It's more akin to DeVry.

A Big Ten University mentioned in the in the same sentence as Devry, Youre grasping at straws.:lmao: The funny thing is there are constant insults from you in regards to MSU but none for central , eastern, western, northern...I could say 10 more. Even OSU is "one notch lower" academically than UM and never a word about them, that makes you lose credibility rather quickly.

Because of Sparty's recent successes in football, added to the ongoing success in basketball, I think the University deserves to have a cool nickname just like Walmart Wolverines for the portion of its fan base that has no association with the school or the athletic program whatsoever.

Off the top of my head, the choice that seems most obvious to me is Spartan Store Spartans.

There are no Spartan Stores here in California where I live, but it doesn't matter, because there are no Spartan fans here that don't have ties to the school.

Like, nobody who grew up in East Lansing and went to MSU as an undergrad and then moved to Los Angeles is going to go out to watch the Spartans on TV at a sports bar, and like 20 times in close to 30 years run into a group of guys in Sparty gear, born and raised in LA who have had nothing to do with MSU in their lives, but they grew up loving the Spartan helmet and became life long Spartan fans for no other reason.

Oh, or they became Spartan fans because of the hugeness of the Ohio State Michigan State rivalry, where everyone who has nothing to do with either school nevertheless picks a side to root for, and the ones who pick Sparty become Spartan fans because of that.

Never gonna happen.

I don't know what the state fan base split is but I'd guess we do well in younger demographics since most teenagers or kids in their early 20 ' s don't remember Michigan being good at football. They just hear about it from their parents

I have several MSU grads/friends that live in California

Of course.

I didn't say there are no Spartan fans here.

I said there are no Spartan fans here that don't have ties to the school.

A number of MSU grads moved to So Cal; lots have gotten really good jobs.

Here is a link to the local Spartan Alumni Association website.

That is how most people become fans of a team / school...their parents...not who is good when they are kids.

kids like to back winners - there was always a group of kids at school whose favorite teams were the ones that just won the superbowl, Stanley Cup, World Series, etc, etc - and they also like to assert their independence from their parents. Of course there are kids who love Michigan because their parents went there or grew up loving Michigan - the internet is littered with pictures of kids in maize and blue t-shirts or face paint crying at games or in front of the TV but there are plenty of people who become fans of teams because they win...

I know a guy who is a Florida State football fan, UNC Hoops fan, a Bulls fan and a 49ers fan in NFL. Yeah, all the powerhouse teams in their respective sports when he was a kid, so weak.

we'll end up ranked higher in basketball than football, never thought I'd say that

Yeah, even if we lose on Saturday we'll finish 4th in the polls. Pretty incredible to be top 5 in both major sports.

Both teams should be better next year on paper, not saying the results will be better but if you look at the rosters i think both should be more talented.

Or who they grew up rooting for themself.

Like Magic Johnson.

Spartan fan or not, Magic's dad wanted him to choose Michigan.

But at the end of the day he couldn't; Ervin Johnson had grown up a Spartan fan and he could only be a Spartan; he could never be a Wolverine.

I was really really bummed at the news.

But I understood.

he was a lot closer to choosing Michigan which was the better program at the time, Jud was indifferent as a recruiter, this wasn't an easy decision for him.

Bump.

Final 4. Izzo has his best recruiting class coming in. A ton coming back next year, should be a top 10 team.

Football Spring practice is going, the defense beat the offense in the scrimmage with the secondary doing really well.

2015-16 is going to be the best sports year yet for MSU fans.

I hope, tough to top last year for both sports. I know it's crazy to think you can win two national titles but they should be in the conversation for both

Playing well in a spring game and keeping up with Oregon and Ohio St. WR's are two different things. That secondary, until it proves itself, is a massive question mark.

National title in football?? Eh........defense played 2 good offenses and were torched 2 times. Defense needs to be A LOT better in '15 to even contend for a Big Ten title. Without Narduzzi and Waynes.

Not likely.

Are they still a top 15 team? Absolutely. But with all the SEC love that goes around during the season......getting into the top 4 at the end of the year will require a perfect record in 2015......which won't happen.

I think a loss to Oregon early would not hurt our chances of getting in if we beat an undefeated OSU team along the way.

Also if MSU and OSU come into that game undefeated it could somehow play out that both teams make it to the tournament. A lot of things would have to fall in place though.

I think it's the same as last year, beating oregon would be nice but doesn't make a difference. If we beat osu we're in, if not we're out assuming we win our other games. I don't think there's any chance we'd get in at 11-1 with a loss ot osu and not playing in the title game.

Oregon without Marriota is a much different team and getting them at home definitely helps but OSU is going to be stacked again. Maybe, maybe if we're 11-1 and play them close at Columbus while they go undefeated through the B1G Champ game we could get in IF the SEC teams that aren't conf champs all have 2 or more losses and a few other things fall in place. But in order to make the playoff I think we have to win the B1G and that almost certainly means beating OSU in Columbus.
