IT'S ON!!!......For the Championship

Yeah, and in the postgame interview he can say how much he hates coaching, how much he hates his players, give the opposing team no credit whatsoever, and yell at some reporters. Then he can blame injuries and the refs for every time that something doesn't go his way. Then he can throw in there that his players are tired even though they just had a week off.
I have no idea how any kid wants to play for him.

Sorry for yelling at some of you. I'll try to be better.

It's no excuse, but as Izzo says, I've been tired and i had eaten some pacski that day and was wired from all of the sugar. Plus, I'm almost 50. I'm getting grouchy.

In the future, I'll try to just ignore things I don't like or try to express my opinion better without trying to sound like I'm telling people that they have no right to post what they post, even if I have read it 1,000 times from various posters over the last 4 months and the team is really, really good.
I apologize for going overboard with the sarcastic asshole routine. My buddies and I do that to each other all the time, but I realize it doesn't come off as light as it does with people in person who have known me for over 20 years.

If a player picks up a 3rd foul at 18:30 left in the 2nd half, I'd expect every coach in America to sit him down

Most games I watch, If a player picks up a 2nd foul in the first half, they bench the guy until halftime. They MIGHT bring him back for the last minute or 2.

Rarely do I see coaches go against that grain.

I thought I said that someone brings up it. Someone might not mean you.

Yes that is all the conventional wisdom. Never did I say it was otherwise. Let me clarify my position on this matter. I am fine with benching guys in foul trouble in the manner you described. As you said it what all smart coaches do. That's not something I would ever question.

In rare instances, I believe a coach should go against this standard operating procedure (and many do), when they observe a game getting out of control as a result of a foul-plagued player being on the bench. The Iowa game was a great example, because Iowa built their huge lead on us in the first half when Teske sat for the vast majority of it and Iowa kept getting to the basket and scoring. YES it is hypothetically possible he picks up his 3rd foul if he goes back out there. So worst case scenario is he sits back down, we are still losing by a butt ton at the half, and Teske has 3 fouls rather than 2. Best case scenario is Teske helps stop the bleeding and doesn't pick up his 3rd foul and we actually have a game that is within reach at the half. You take a gamble either way. Nobody knows for sure which way it would have played out...all I can comment on is that it worked out poorly this time, so I am left to wonder "what if?". And it was not hindsight, I brought the subject up at halftime of the game. And the game was important as we would be Big Ten champions right now if we had one more conference win.

If Simpson picks up two quick fouls tomorrow night, I would be very concerned with him sitting 15+ minutes in the first half. What if MSU builds up a lead and our offense is stagnant without him? I don't want to let another road game of this magnitude get out of hand while one of our best players is forced to not play. These are the types of scenarios that I feel a coach needs to have some leeway and not always adhere to the general philosophies.

Also, this was the start of your post that I replied to:

Yes, They are just opinions after all and as long as you are OK with me telling you that it is my opinion that your opinion is invalid, then it's all good.

Now I know that you don't like the auto-bench philosophy. You've told us this over and over for about 4 months now in almost every thread involving basketball.

You specifically said that I have been the one to mention this in every single thread for 4 months. You can check my post history, because that is absolutely false as I explained. That is why I felt the need to respond the way I did.

It's all good. We all just want Umich to be great at everything, and we use the board in different ways to express ourselves. I offer a virtual handshake and say no biggie let's forget about it and go kick sparty's ass tomorrow.

I know

Another thing about this is that he was absolutely giddy after beating MIchigan in AA, understandably so, but then his team gets a week off for the @IU game and he turns right back into this.

OK, my bad. I threw you to the wolves, because I've read it 10,000 times on various message boards.

Hopefully, no one gets into foul trouble.

Yep, it's hard to detect mood in internet posts. I probably came across as really mad about this stuff, when it really is just a *groan this again* kind of thing.

I think this requires an internet group hug of sorts.

It is. I screw it up and then know other people are taking some of my posts as if I'm angry.

Besides, we can't end the thread yet. We need Spartanmack to get on here and tell us how that IF Purdue beats NW, that the game is only for a share of the regular season big 10 title, even though everyone already knows this.

no, no - you've said it all. No changes need to be made to any gameplans based on the different strengths of different opponents - 26-4 means you can't be argued with because facts.

Sure, we are all well aware he is a great coach. But he's not perfect. And he will do things such as the auto-sub that some of us have a problem with. And seeing how other people have handled Winston (pressuring him up the court) and considering that maybe it could be a good switch up for game 2. It is fun to discuss with other like-minded basketball fans who notice similar trends.

I still struggle why you even bother sometimes saying the stuff you do on a message board about opinions. That's why we are here. Talking about the good and the bad. That's what it's about. There's no reason to come in here and squash every conversation with "Fans are dumb, he's the coach, he knows more than all of us." No shit.

I haven't watched that much uofm basketball this season but I find it hard to believe that Beilein has had the exact same gameplan for every opponent and not made tweaks here and there based on a certain teams strengths or weaknesses. For example, has uofm doubled the PG every game like they did against Winston? From what I've seen of uofm this year, they're not the kind of team that can force their will onto opponents, at least not all opponents so other than things like pulling guys when they get early fouls I would expect he's been successful because he's made adjustments - particularly on defense. Is that not the case as hungry seems to be indicating?

Sure, I'm guilty of it myself. I was sitting on the coach midway through the 2nd half of the Maryland game and I yelled out, "Dang! Quit shooting 3's and drive!" Thing is, I didn't post it. Then Michigan hit like 3 3's in the next 2 minutes and I looked stupid. I only looked stupid to myself, though, because no one knew I said that, well, until now. Now everyone knows.

trust me, everyone already knew.

The Jack Breslin Student Events Center opened my sophomore year and we hosted Purdue for the last game of the season - win and we were outright champs, lose and we tied Purdue. It was a great game - Steve Scheffler was a senior center for Purdue while Steve Smith was a junior. Spartans won on late steal and basket to avoid OT - the place was nuts. Hopefully this game 19 years later will be as fun.

As I said to Dubbs, I wouldn't expect any huge changes. I already mentioned there might be a couple of tweaks, such as the ones we saw in the home game vs Nebraska.

One of the players will often hedge out (i think that is the term they are using) on the pg or other guard and it seems like they are doubling that player for a quick moment. Most opponents have not caught Michigan while they were doing this. They have been doing it pretty much all season. Every now and then, the one player that is hedging will get caught spending too much time out there and there will be a pass down to his man in the paint. Unfortunately, this happened quite a bit against MSU. I imagine that Izzo saw this tendency and exploited it.

The team is 26-4. JB isn't going to change the entire gameplan for 1 game this far into the season. He did throw in some new looks against Nebraska and Maryland, but I wouldn't expect full court presses, zones, doing away with the auto-bench. People like to bitch and moan, but they have won 26 games. It's working.

Yep, right there

I wouldn't expect him to change the entire gameplan. Then I mentioned how he threw in a few new looks against Nebraska and Maryland aka a few minor tweaks. Then I went on to say what I wouldn't expect to see. Of course, that is just my opinion. JB could surprise us all and do this stuff. JB is usually pretty conservative, though and doesn't go wild like that.

Isn't reading wonderful?
