Ugh!!! Why can't we get rid of this slug of a coach???

I wish management would wait until the season is over before making decisions for next year.

The timing of this announcement is laughable. How about you wait until after the season so you can evaluate all of your options. This comes out NOW? As though this will be some extra motivation or something for the team?

I won't get this organization, and I never will.

It's not even like the guy's contract is up. It's not like he's a lame duck coach. I guess I don't really care because making the playoffs is this team's version of another team making the Super Bowl, I had a pretty good feeling he wasn't getting fired but the timing is bizarre.

They were never going to get rid of him this year. That's not how the Lions operate. They had a winning record. The Lions aren't going to part ways with a coach who had a successful season...in their eyes.

Can't stand Caldwell, but what team fires a coach after making the playoffs? This was expected

Meh...whatever. I'm back and forth with Caldwell being gone. Look at it this way....the HC candidates coming out next year are not mindblowing. There's McDaniels and Patrician from the Patriots. Everyone already has McDaniels going to LA. Patrician is getting some love. There's even talk about Mike Smith being the hot candidate. Ya....who cares?

It tells you that they are happy with status quo. In their minds being in the playoffs is success.

So if Quinn sees this as a 5 or 6 win team and they overachieved to 9-7......that means their happy with the status quo?

Making statements like that without knowing ANYTHING about what anyone thinks is rediculous. You have no fucking clue.

So we're making assumptions now that he thought it was a 5-6 win team? If that's what he thought why not get better players after he got hired? I mean what GM thinks "hey, this a 5-6 win team - but I'm good." If that's the case then we're in trouble.

You guys do realize you root for the Lions, right? What kind of message would you send to potential head coach hires if they'd fire Caldwell? "Yeah, make the playoffs with a roster made of duct tape and bubble gum and you'll still be on the hot seat." Sounds like a great place to start a career... right. Glad you guys arent the GM.

Look at the source, man. He is clueless. It's a process in hiring and firing these coaches. You don't fire a coach because the fanbase doesn't like the guy lol. Me personally, a part of me wants him gone but another part of me is happy that we finally have a winning coach. But there is no panic button right now. This team isn't in meltdown mode IMO. But wtf do I know? Lol

I am not and never will be a Caldwell fan. Playing the style of football he likes to play doesn't fit this team, IMO. I think they play under Staffords full potential. We play conservative at the start of games......ultra conservative if we get a lead and super ultra conservative with a late lead. We will never get a large lead playing that way unless everything goes right. Ther is just little margin for error with his style of play.

Also, we are never competitive in big games......meaning we rarely add any new wrinkles on a weekly basis. We'll always just beat the bad teams and lose to the good teams. We'll only have a winning record in years where we play more bad than good.....like 2016.

You just made an assumption that Quinn thinks this season was a success. Right? Lol.

Andy Reid, 4 NFC title games. Bad move by them but winning coaches get fired all the time. Whether it works or not is irrelevant. Some teams have more than a 9-7 playoff appearance as a measure of success.

Message would be, there is an open spot available.

It's a head coach job in the NFL, there are very few coaches who would turn down a spot because the team fired the previous coach after making the playoffs.

But a coach that is an upgrade over caldwell would be wanted by every other team that is looking for a coach as well. You act like those kind of coaches grow on trees. Caldwell has a sb ring, not many coaches have that kind of credential to their resume. Its one thing to say fire caldwell, its another to find a coach that is actually better than him.

I'm with you on this. Let's see how Saturday plays out.

To me, Caldwell needs good/great coordinators to be successful. Another successful draft, a couple solid to good FA's and a little more luck with guys staying healthy and we could take another step forward. The schedule certainly is stronger next year.

Losing Austin could be a blessing in disguise, IMO. I say could because it depends on who his replacement would be. Another conservative DC would not help this team......but I have a feeling that's exactly what we would get.
