Jim Caldwell to return as Lions coach in 2017

But a coach that is an upgrade over caldwell would be wanted by every other team that is looking for a coach as well. You act like those kind of coaches grow on trees. Caldwell has a sb ring, not many coaches have that kind of credential to their resume. Its one thing to say fire caldwell, its another to find a coach that is actually better than him.

There's no guarantee's. But maybe we get lucky. If we win a playoff game it will be in spite of Caldwell. I would have fired him after the comments he made when he decided to not use Zenner vs Dallas in half 2. Who does that..

The team that has playoff banners up. That's who.

Again, you do realize you are a Lions fan? Do you really want to talk about luck? C'mon man, be serious. It wouldnt be long until the next guy the lions get is being tarred and feathered for not winning all the goddamned time. Caldwell hasnt done anything that deserved him being fired, I say the Lions organization should act accordingly.

I'm not saying fire him, but the idea a coach would want to avoid a place because they fired their last coach after making the playoffs is silly.

This wasn't about finding someone better, it was a comment on your statement.

If a hot coach was available, and your choices are Jacksonville or Detroit, do you really think they would lean towards Jacksonville because they didn't fire a coach that made the playoffs? Is a 3-13 team more desirable than a 9-7?

If it meant better job security if I can take that same 3-13 team to 8-8 vs. being fired for taking the 9-7 team to 8-8, then yes, of course.

A fan has to approve and be happy with everything they do? And yes he has done plenty, first they fire an OC because of lack of offense, next OC has lack of offense. Maybe's it's the HC. It's 9-7. The division title was all but wrapped up. When does 9-7 after 7-9 season become success? Only in Detroit.

Or maybe the franchise leader in receiving yards and touchdowns retired the previous year in the middle of his prime and the running backs on our squad are third string at best outside of abdullah who is hurt. I'd say getting the offense we did in that situation is a blessing. Stafford still performed like a pro bowl caliber qb under cooter as well with that mess of an offense.

Wait a minute, this is all Calvin's fault? Lol. Abdullah? You mean the stud that at best is an unknown. I think you're confused, how is Matt the 3rd best QB in the NFC to deserve a pro bowl? And his first half was pro bowl like, the 2nd half (even before his injury) was nothing like a pro bowl QB.

But it's all Calvin's fault.

I heard many during the season that said our WR were better this year without Calvin. At least until they realize the ones we have suck.

If your goal is being average, than I guess that's what you shoot for. Job security.

You would probably fit in well working in a large department, for a big corporation. You can be average all day long and keep your job.

what's the cap space look like for next year, how much room are they going to have to pursue quality FA's to plug some of these many holes they have.

If your goal is to piss off coaches and make this place even more undesirable than it already is for good coaches, fire caldwell. Ask Philly how treating winning coaches and elite talent like crap got them far.

Most of us can agree coaching is an area where we need to get better. Theres definitely a long list and this might be so far down the line for Quin that he just said fuck it....not worrying about that right now.

Elite talent? Lol.

You need to learn to read. It was in response to another post.

No it wasn't! lol. You said this (Quinn/Martha) team looked at this year (playoffs) as a success. That's why Caldwell is still here. You're ASSUMING that's their way of thinking

Yeah Quinn would actually be stupid to fire Caldwell now. That would put Quinn on the hot seat. If he fires Caldwell now and the team finishes with a poor record next season, which is very possible based on the supposed tougher schedule then the top brass would have to look at getting rid of Quinn for the dumb decision. Wait one more year, see what happens, and then if we finish 5-11 or 6-10 he can pull the trigger and go get his coach and not the coach he inherited. Gives him more time.

Like most of you I don't think Caldwell makes the team better or adds an intangible we can't find with another coach. The problem is no coach has ever had any success here. We've changed out coaches many times and gotten the exact same result. So I'm not in a huge hurry to just make a coaching change.

Most of what you said is fair, but that wouldn't put Quinn on the hot seat whatsoever. It would show that he's actually calling the shots. I still think Martha is really driving the coaching decision here.

What makes you think that?

I am not a big fan of Caldwell and never wanted him here in the first place but I am not pissed with keeping a coach that has made the playoffs 2 out of the first 3 seasons.
