Jim Caldwell to return as Lions coach in 2017

Bullshit. Seattle at home (7-1) is an entirely different team than on the road. If you really rank them below a Houston team that doesn't even have JJ Watt, you're delusional. That Houston game was VERY winnable and the offense didn't do shit until a garbage TD in the 4th quarter. Try that on the road in Seattle and you're in for a shit show. Stafford needs to play the game of his life.

Seattle without Thomas is garbage. They can't run the ball or protect the QB.

And that Houston game we didn't have Slay or Levy and Ansah was still banged up. Seattle is worse than Houston. Houston was 7-1 at home too. Houston has a good defense. Even without Watt.

And it was not a garbage time TD. We scored in early 4th to cut the game to 17-10. They got a FG then we got another FG to cut to 20-13. Nothing was garbage time

Houston 11th in PPG defense. Very low passer rating allowed with a good secondary. Mercilus and Clowney can play. Solid LBs, good secondary. Houston defense is better than Seattle's current defense without Thomas. Texans can run the ball better than Seattle right now and protect their QB better. Wilson is better than Osweiler.

You know why they brought back Caldwell? Because his coordinators did all the heavy lifting for him.

If those guys both leave in the off-season, you'll truly see what kind of head coach he is.

Huh? Because they won't hire a Dco or Oco? Lol

They didn't have Watt or Wilfork. Quit with the fucking excuses. Slay, Levy, and Ansah don't play on offense. 1 touchdown.

Seattle hasn't played as well without Thomas but to call them garbage while you're jerking yourself off over a Detroit defense that just got run over all day is disingenuous at best.

Can Detroit win? Sure. But if they play like they did when the division was on the line, they won't. Russell Wilson is going to have his track shoes on if they rush 4 and let him scramble like they let Rodgers do.

They had Wilfork. Houston has good defense without Watt. Seattle doesn't without Thomas is the points

Houston tougher defense
Houston better run offense
Houston better protection
Both 7-1 at home
Seattle better QB
About same weapons Hopkins/Fuller vs Baldwin/Graham

The Lions will do better against Seattle. Thomas is out. Lions can score 24-27 which will be enough to win this game. Seattle offense has problems. Run game and protection. The Wilson ninja scrambles will be the key. We got Slay, we got Ansah, we got Levy. We can stop Baldwin and Graham.

Lions have a great shot to win in Seattle. We match up well with them

Houston is 7th in QB rating allowed without Watt. Seattle is 9th and lost Thomas.

Stafford will have a nice day

I'm a little late to the discussion but IMO I'm not surprised that Caldwell is coming back next year for a few reasons.

1. This team over achieved this season record wise. It's impossible to how much of that is due to Caldwell vs Stafford/the coordinators, but regardless, this team was predicted to go at best 7-9 by most pundits. You don't fire a HC after having a year better than was expected.

2. The lions have made the playoffs in 2 of 3 seasons under Caldwell and he has a winning record overall. Many of you have stated examples of teams who fired coaches after wining seasons or playoff berths, but those were unique / completely different circumstances. In Philly (Reid), and SD (Marty Shottenheimer) both teams couldn't get over the hump, and had underachieved in the playoffs consecutive years in a row after having fantastic regular seasons. The Lions are not even close to that level. We are not a Pitt, NE, GB, or any other elite franchise that routinely makes the playoffs. Firing a coach sneaking into the playoffs mugu make sense for a team which has been there 5-8 times the decade, but not for the Lions.

3. Stablitity is extremely underrated in sports, especially the NFL. Bellichek just came out and said as much. I don't think that Caldwell is the best coach in the league, but I think he's above average. Who would be his replacement? There is no sure fire hire out there who I immediately would know is better suited for this job than Caldwell. I remember being really bummed when Det missed out on Wisenhunt, I thought he was going to be the next great coach, but obviously he flamed out in a big way. It's extremely hard to predict HC success.

4. Finally, and maybe most importantly, Caldwell was not extended, he just isn't getting fired; that's a big difference. Keeping him around for the last year of his contract does not mean Quinn and the FO are satisfied with going 9-7 and backing into the playoffs, it just means they are willing to give him one more year to improve the team. Caldwell will not be extended unless this team improves next season (I.E. wins a playoff game or the division)

Seattle has a qb, no they are not worse than Houston. But yes, Seattle right now is the best case scenario for the Lions, and is the best possible matchup we have faced in our 3 postseason matchups since Stafford has been our qb. I'm excited for this matchup, I think we win. Facing our 2nd mobile qb in as 3 weeks, we SHOULD be prepared defensively for it, and this time we won't be facing a great oline.

Historically, a 7.5 - 8 point underdog wins about 25% of the time. The current money line is +300. If you are that they win you should put some money on the money line. You win $300 on a $100 bet!

If they stay at 8points or thereabouts I might put some money on them. I don't expect it to be a blowout, if they were at home I'd give the Lions a chance..

I have very little hope the Lions will win this game. Just can't see it happening given the short week and west coast trip.

Seattles Defense is completely different without Thomas as FS (giving up 24.5 pts/game since he got hurt),but I still worry about Wilson shredding us with his mobility. I don't think we will be able to score enough to keep up.

I realllllly hope im wrong but I am fully expecting a loss.

Redskins fire many of their defensive staff. They weren't much worse than us.

Lions were 13th in PPG. Skins 19th. Lions 18th in YPG, Skins 28th. So no it wasn't that close.

Lions had way more key injuries on defense. Ansah, Levy, Bynes, Slay, Diggs.

Old DeAngelo Hall, rookie Cravens(3 games), Breeland (2 games) and Bruton were super minor compared to that.

But troll on Mitch. Troll on. There is zero reason to say that comment that you did. But you did. So now I show you why you are wrong.

Eh Washingtons defense was a good deal worse than ours this season (and last season).

Yards allowed:
Det: 18th
WSH: 28th

Pts allowed:
Det: 13th
WSH: 19th

This is after Washington spent big $$ on Norman this offseason and used 3 of their first 4 draft picks on defense. Their defense underperformed big time, the same can't be said about Detroit IMO.

1.2 points is not that much worse.

What's your point? This is a Gruden move at it's finest. Somebody has to take the fall. Why not his whole defensive staff? Lol. Maybe take a look at your QB and realize he took a dump against the Giants.
