Jim Caldwell to return as Lions coach in 2017

Caldwell and the coordinators are good coaches. Playoffs 2 of 3 years. Close in 2015. Glad caldwell gets a 4th year. Lets make some noise in the playoffs

Mccarthy first 3 years in gb. 27-21 record. With favre and rodgers

Caldwell first 3 years with lions. 27-21

Mike zimmer. 26-22

Fox 2 losing seasons with bears. Big time

Stability is very important in this league. Quinn made the right choice two years in a row

What you failed to mention:

McCarthy went 13-3 in his 2nd year and went to the NFC conference championship game.

McCarthy 28-22

Caldwell 27-22

What you failed to mention in mccarthy missed playoffs 2 of 3 years. Caldwell made playoffs 2 of 3. Mccarthy had two hof qbs. Yet caldwell basically matches him.

Gb beat seattle before they got good in playoffs. At lambeau after a bye. Lions got screwed by refs at dallas

And basically you missed thw whole point. Caldwell matched or closely matched mccarthy. So caldwell deserves to keep his job

I'm not a huge Caldwell fan, but I understand the move to keep him. Like him or not he's done more with this organization than any other coach has lately, and who is really out there right now to replace him? I would want a most definite upgrade, and I'm not sure that guy is out there right now. We'd be taking a gamble.

You know why they brought back Caldwell? Because his coordinators did all the heavy lifting for him.

If those guys both leave in the off-season, you'll truly see what kind of head coach he is.

Caldwell could match or pass McCarthy this post season...or fall further behind.

I never said Caldwell didn't deserve to keep his job. I believe he does. Hell, he is the most successful Lions coach over the past 1/4 century!

Caldwell is boring. However he in at least someway responsible from turning us from a team with one of the most amount of missed tackles, to one of the least.

Also seemed to reduce the number of penalties. Regarding penalties interestingly enough, we had the most penalties called on our opponents than any other playoff team. Guess the refs love us.

So Caldwell brought discipline, which is something we were missing every year. So in that aspect he has been a success.

Close in 2015? Only in bastardized, true win, bizarro LKP world.

One of my favorite radio guys Sean Baligian has always said it best. When people on the radio or on here have said, "He's the best Lions coach we've had."

"Stop comparing the Lions to the Lions."

If he's not your guy after this season and you are just spinning your wheels with Caldwell, get who you want to run the show.

Caldwell matches up with good coaches in record.

Stafford got better. It's not just Cooter
Turnovers. Lions had 15 allowed this year. Franchise best
ST coverage much better (Carey and Bademosi and Martin big reason)
Penalties are lower especially pre-snap
They play hard for him every single time
Lions have dealt with some injuries and succeeded. Could use more health though

Caldwell deserved a 4th year and let's see what noise he can make in the playoffs

Seattle allows 99 QB rating without Earl Thomas. Seattle has run game and protection problems. Detroit can win this game.

just saw this on ESPN.com

Most wins this season vs. playoff teams: Tennessee 5, Green Bay 5, New England 4, Philadelphia 4. Also noteworthy: Detroit 0, Miami 1, Oakland 1, Houston 2, Atlanta 2, Pittsburgh 2.

That can't be Caldwell's fault. We can't blame our QB either, people get angry. Who here is shocked by the number 0?

Detroit had five games against playoffs teams. Four of them were away. Giants, Packers, Texans, Cowboys are a combined 27-5 at home this season.

Green Bay had six games against playoff teams. Five of them were at Lambeau. Green Bay was 6-2 there (but did lose to Colts and Cowboys). 4-4 away (did beat Detroit)

You need the context.

Detroit can beat a playoff team this week.

Also that loss to the Titans doesn't seem so bad now.

And by the way, Detroit plays 10 teams next year that are .500 or worse. And the 11th is the 9-7 Bucs who didn't make the playoffs. 11 wins for Detroit next year even if they don't beat a playoff team. 3 of those games against playoff teams this year will be at Ford Field next year (Packers, Falcons and Steelers)

So the Lions lost 5 games vs. playoff teams, 4 of those on the road and one at home and you think the Lions are going to win this playoff game on the road?

It seems that there is more evidence that they will lose on the road vs. a playoff team...doesn't it?

Seattle is worse than all those teams though. And Detroit is good enough to win on the road with the right health. Slay didn't play against Houston, Dallas or Giants (half game). Levy and Ansah missed at Green Bay early. Swanson and Reiff need to come back. Reiff missed GB and at Houston

We will beat Seattle with Slay, Swanson and Reiff playing

And more reasons why we win
Seattle allows 99 QB rating without Earl Thomas
Seattle can't run the ball well (and Prosise is out) Rawls struggled this year
Seattle can't protect Wilson well (sacks and overall pressure)
Wilson isn't scrambling as well this year as years past (was never sustainable)
Lions good on ST
Lions plenty of clutch play this year
Stafford finger healing well
Swanson and Reiff need to play to improve Oline
Seattle interior not big presser so the Lions interior can do well
Slay can handle Baldwin
Zenner has picked up the run game (though Seattle is best in league defending run)
Stafford is a good QB, clutch QB
Lions still have plenty of weapons with Jones, Tate, Ebron and Boldin

Bullshit. Seattle at home (7-1) is an entirely different team than on the road. If you really rank them below a Houston team that doesn't even have JJ Watt, you're delusional. That Houston game was VERY winnable and the offense didn't do shit until a garbage TD in the 4th quarter. Try that on the road in Seattle and you're in for a shit show. Stafford needs to play the game of his life.
