Lions aways seem to grasp at straws when hiring HCs or GMs, seems like they apparently don't want to expend a lot of time and effort searching, researching and interviewing many candidates, and will often go with those who they receive positive feedback from sources outside of their organization.
They don't want controversial or headstrong HCs with a history of sucess who might disagree with or oppose their decision-making or corporate philosophy, and tend to wait far beyond the time that their hirings should have become firings. They reward mediocrity like other NFL franchises reward success. They will frequently retain or extend failures if they have had even a bare modicum of success in-between bust seasons.
The Lions have a history of futility in nearly 60 years, in large part b/c they have only had only a handful of (mostly terrible) GMs who overstayed and wore our their welcome by many years if not decades. Since WCF purchased the team: Edwin Anderson ('63-'66) Russ Thomas ('67-'88) Chuck Schmidt ('89-'00) Matt Millen '01-'08) and Martin Mayhew ('09-present)
From Russ Thomas at least they're getting shorter.
