Kiper mock 4/17

The Levy pick for instance he was the only Lb outside of the first half of the first round that has played even remotely well in the 09 draft. That much hate for a guy who is not a great player but has been serviceable from a third. To bitch about that makes you a turd. Also the other Lbs in that draft is Aaron Curry=bust, Brian Cushing=Roids, Brian Orakpo=3-4 Olb and has been injured alot, Clay Mathews=3-4 OLB, James Laurinitis, Rey Maualuga= bust, Jason Williams? those are the guys drafted ahead of him.

give me a guys name that mayhew drafted mid round that is producing for us and has been here beyond 2 years. Here ill help you:

2010 - spievey, fox
2009- levy, derrick williams (slh was a great rotational player and we dont resign him. agree to disagree on levy....i think he blows)
2008- dizon, kevin smith, fluellen

Spievey has started for us.

They keep holding onto Fox for s reason...they obviously like him.

I never said Levy was the second coming of Ray Lewis but hes a starter.

DWill was a joke...wow.

SLH wanted bigger money, didnt he? He got it in Tennessee. Everybody knew he was bolting. Besides, we have 2 beasts who play DT and picked up Mosely. SLH who?

Dizon...another joke

KJ....filled in nicely at times and was somewhat a decent backup.

Fluellen...another player who filled in. not a total waste.

What do you want from those guys? You act like every other team hits on every round in the draft...they dont.
Just for shits and giggles, go look up mid round drafts on other 'elite' teams and tell me their drafts are stellar from top to bottom. You'd be shocked at what you find

DWill was a joke but there was 6 Wrs all taken around the same time. Only one of them has been any good. Mike Wallace who was helped by B.R. and his ability to scramble and wallace's ability to get open down field in a scramble. In another offense i dont see him putting up those kinds of numbers. So its pretty hard to complain to much. Other guys in that draft order were Ramses Barden, Brandon Tate, Deon Butler, Patrick Turner, and then the next round had mike thomas and brian hartline.

So its just a crap shoot. But we should all expect MM to score perfect on every pick after the 1st.

I'll say this much.. I somehow expect Jason Fox to be our starting RG this season. Not sure why, just a gut feeling.

And with a guy the size of mine, you should pay a lot of attention to my gut hunches.

I can't even believe some of you guys would question Martin Mayhew's drafts after he had the amazing forsight and vision to draft TIM ****ING TOONE!

You need a checkup from the neckup!

Look I am not saying this dude is the best GM in the league. This franchise has made some terrible draft picks. All I can say is compared to other franchises we have drafted better in the past few drafts. Im just sick of all the debbie downer shit from some of these people. They have drafted guys later on in the draft based on potential and have had some rough luck with some talented guys. Im just not going to say he is trash when he at least has put a watchable product on the field.

You know Hughes in no part of my post did I ever call you a name. I said your opinion was stupid not you. But since you couldnt keep an opinion on a message board civil I will play this game. You hate so ****ing much every pick mayhew makes how about you go back and look at the draft picks you question. Then find me a guy in that range he should have picked either same position or justify why your position would be better. I'll wait

i apologize for not being able to distinguish the difference between saying all my posts are stupid is not the same as calling me stupid.

Im not being a revisionist here. Since day 1 i said best wouldnt amount to anything in the nfl, titus was a headcase, spievey sucked and the entire idea of drafting a 3rd rd cb and moving him to safety wasnt going to work out, dwill was dumb and levy sucked. The FIRST second they were drafted i said that about all of them....none of them have done anything to change my mind. Leshoure i stated was dumb cause no rb would ever make this oline look good (3.0 ypc says i was right). Broyles i said was dumb cause he was a luxory pick for a team that had a million holes, upcomming cap issues at major positions of need like DE and was not going to be anything more than your 4th string WR in an offense that rarely plays 4 WRs. Not to mention the fact he was comming off an injury. All of it came to fruition.....so theres 2 things that could be true:

1) im a complete visionary and belong in books the likes of nostradamus.

2) any person with half a brain could see how most of these moves werent going to help this team down the road.

The guy is counting 2008 losses agaisnt Mayhew's record. He obvisouly is blinded by unjust hate. Stick to the draft prospects hughes, yourassessement of the reason for the failings of the past is terrible.

Millen was going on 5 years ago. FIVE! Keep making excuses for Mayhew, LKP. Who else am i supposed to blame? Injuries? cause when good teams get injured they have quality depth that steps in....see baltimore. We have no depth.....we dont even have a starting defense right now lol.

Well, i gave you more than one. So what??

At least i agreed with ya on a couple of players. ;)

i hear ya tony....i was replying to motown who keeps putting words in my mouth that i say every single one of mayhews picks needs to be a hit. I just want someone to step up out of the bunch. Sure you named some guys...but in no way have any of those players turned into a solid player for us imo. Levy ...hes meh at best imo. You guys make fun of alphonso smith for getting trucked into the endzone...but what i see is levy completely getting eaten up by a soft block and spievey whiffing on the tackle on the 3 allowing for alphonso to get trucked lol. This play is a microcosm of what levy and spievey have been doing over their entire careers. Only thing missing is spievey biting on play action allowing for a huge throw down field.

i get that. I never said i was a huge fan of either player but at least they have contributed a bit. Spievey came into the league and was asked to switch positions. Levy was a 3rd rd pick who starts. Cant really ask for much more than that.

All I am saying is that when you look at who else was available when some of these guys were drafted they were and still are the best of the bunch. Levy is one of two LBs from his draft not taken in the first round to even be a decent player and a starter no less. I dont know why they havent upgraded from him because I agree he is only mediocre. Spievey I also said at the time was trash. I will never defend that. But to say Best was bad because it didnt work out due to injuries is false. Without him we dont make the playoffs that year. His upside was tremendous and he completely made this offense almost impossible to defend. Leshoure has a lot of upside if he can come back from this achilles. He was a red zone monster this year. Something this team has struggled with in the past. A lot of the 3rd and on picks havent worked out but they generally dont. So to grade someone on that is ridiculous. He has hit early which for this franchise is a big step with multiple wasted early picks. He has made zero bad first round picks and his 2nd rd has been the worse luck I have ever seen. There is no other explanation.

We have no depth? You are dead wrong hughes. Open your eyes
QB Shaun Hill played great for Stafford in the Titan game
Tackle Reiff did well for Backus in the Houston game and provided 200 quality snaps as an extra tackle. Hilliard has filled in well for Gosder in the past (6-0 when he plays 50 snaps so the Lions didn't miss a beat).
LB Palmer did well for Levy in 2 wins
DT Fairley and Sammie Lee Hill stepped up nicely for Corey Williams
WR Broyles stepped up big time for both Young and Burleson. The offense was still scoring against Houston. Heck even Indy with just Calvin/Pettigrew playing once WRs 2-4 all went down. Sorry we were playing 5th-7th string WRS due to injuries and were missing our TE, no other team was.
RB: Hello, Bell did well and LeShoure was our number 2 RB since we got terrible news with Best. LeShoure had a solid YPC by Thanksgiving before Detroit lost all their receiving weapons and TE.
TE Scheffler is a decent number 2 TE but could have done better IMO

That is ALL QUALITY DEPTH.

I'm sorry we were playing our 5th-7th string safeties and 5th-6th string CBs. Carey, Green and Bartell actually did a solid job though only too little too late after Florence/Coleman/Wendling/Silva failed. Safety was only a problem because Delmas, Spievey AND Carey(training camp) got hurt. Show me another team that was playing a 4th(Coleman) and 5th string safety(Wendling) followed by 6th string safeties(Silva) for the MAJORITY OF THE YEAR. Plus at the time Coleman wasn't a bad option as a vet with starting experience for a 4th safety. He played terrible and got the boot though.

CB was probably the thinnest with 3 rookies and Lacey/Florence but Green/Bartell eventually stepped up. It was too late by then. Bentley playing 4 games with a shoulder injury since the 3rd preseason game, Lacey was average then got hurt, Florence did well in Weeks 1 and 2 stepping in for Chris Houston but sucked after he broke his arm and went on temp IR and returned. CBs 2-4 weren't as bad as you think and not the biggest reason the Lions lost (turnovers, safeties, DE play from usual good staters/backups). There is a reason Walton was hired as a DC for coaching 5th-7th stringers up. We'll see what Bentley, Green, Greenwood in year 2 and Bartell can do this year. Plus they could draft one in Round 2 or 3 to make you happy. But I'm sure once you know said CB prospects name you'll give up on him since now he's officially on the Lions roster.

Lions had depth. Still do at alot of positions.

sorry i should have clarified.....quality depth that can actually win games.

His mid pound picks have done nothing. Its not rocket science. Some of you say its too early, how long are we suppose to wait? If they have done nothing in two years, why should I have a woody that they will suddenly turn it around? And I shouldn't just say mid rounders but anything after the 1st..some success but bad luck, maybe but for the most part he's drafted bad.

I have no doubt Reiff could be a good tackle which makes 2012 suck because he didn't play T except for one game. You draft a guy in the first round, a team who was winning 4 games, be a glorified FB. That fault I suspect goes on Schwartz. You know what good teams do? They put the newly drafted 1st rounder in and sit the vet "because they weren't going anywhere". Not play the 36 year old over a 21 year old.
