Let's go get REVIS!!!!!!

not a whole lot you can do in FA when you are in salary cap hell.....biggest mistake Mayhew made was not finding a taker for Cliff Avril then beoing handcuffed into using the tag on him and losing 10+ million in $$$$ that could have and should have been spent elsewhere.

cap isn't moving anywhere for another year or 2 and both Stafford and Suh have to be dealt with as well as 6 or 7 others on defense....Martys fucked.

he did it to himself overpaying and backloading veteran contracts who now have diminishing skill. CW, KVB, burleson, raiola. If they were all gone by now plus the 10.6 million for avril wed be sitting in ok shape after another stafford rework. Atleast with the tulloch deal he started to show that he realizes how much trouble they were in....thats a good sign....i guess...

0-16, dude. 0-16. They needed to overpay for KVB and Burleson. The biggest mistake he made was paying Crapola. But the other two weren't mistakes, we were trying to compete.

The biggest reason we're in the salary cap position we're are in is because of Millen and the constant top 5 picks with an unlimited rookie pay scale. Mayhews hands were pretty much tied from the time he took the job.

And yes, like the Tigers in '04 with Pudge and Maggs, we HAD to overpay to get FA in the building. That's common knowledge and ALSO Millens doing.

As its been pointed out, CJ is off his rookie pay. Same with Staff, or he will be soon.

i get that....but you dont back load the shit out of their contracts so you fuck yourself once they suck and you cant get rid of them or it costs too much to retain them. Give them a high signing bonus or something so you can afford to cut them once their skills diminish.

They started getting in trouble restructuring these guys contracts, to make room to resign some of there guys. KVB, Burleson, Stafford, and Suh all restructured there deal to make room for FA, two years in a row, that's why their cap number is so high (Stafford $21m, Suh $17m, and KVB $10m). Extending Stafford and Suh could potentially free up $13-15m in cap space (kind of like CJ's new deal lowered his cap hit this past year). I don't see how you could consider Burleson a failed FA pick up. He's been a solid receiver for us and a great leader in the locker room.

The contracts weren't back loaded.

There's going to be some major over haul done to this roster (http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2013/01/detroit_lions_gm_martin_mayhew_17.html ) we no longer need to over pay for vets. Its quite possible we see 3 new starters across the Oline. Backus' play declined, he use to be solid against the pass and an average run blocker. He hit the wall like every player does and could be looking to retire. Peterman is a definite cut and Raiola could have watched the Lions claimed his replacement last year during training camp (Bill Nagy). Its not all doom and gloom. Personally I loved the fact that they bring in Xanders to help fill these holes, either through the draft or FA. If we would have fired Mayhew, we'd probably have fired our HC, since Xanders would want "his" guys in those positions.
