Lions hope to inspire bankrupt Detroit

They don't play for the city of Detroit....they play for the Lions. The NFL is a business and the players are just employees.

My guess is most of them play for:
1) their paychecks
2) to win
3) for their teammates

Sure how could any NFL football player ever hope that they might inspire fans living in the city of the NFL team they belong to?

You are trying to change the argument. Again, no one is making a judgment here about Detroit's status as a "shithole" - that is what you were doing. You made an ignorant statement about why "any" player would care. So answer the question I asked you, do you care at all about the "shithole" you live in, and if so why?

You then have your answer.

I don't live in a "shithole" just like the Lions players don't live in a shithole. The reason I care about the city I live in is that is where my kids go to school, have friends, etc. I care about the city that I live in...not the city where I am employed.

Great answer - it is the one I expected too.

. . . but - once again here is the thing. Do you at all identify in any way with the city you are employed in? Keep in mind, that in a professional sport, a huge majority of the fans do still identify with the city. I am sorry you don't, and that actually is probably a part of the problem.

Going back to the original story about hoping that the Lions inspire the city. There is nothing wrong with that. You are projecting your hatred for the so-called "shithole" onto the entire city, everything in it, and anyone who might still identify with it. That is short-sighted, and a bit ignorant.

I was born there and lived there for a number of years - It is a shame what has happened, and I hope the city recovers someday, and if a professional athlete hopes the team inspires Detroiters, I am all for it.

There is nothing wrong if some of the players think that they can "inspire" some of the people in the city but it really isn't doing anything for them. A winning football team might make some people feel good on Sunday but then Monday comes. The reason for the situation in Detroit is because of the people that ran the city and many of the people that live / lived there. The city was basically built on the auto industry but due to the greed of the unions that all collapsed. It was inevetiable that the city would go bankrupt.

No argument there. BTW, I also don't have an argument with people believing and stating that Detroit is a "shithole" - it is in bad shape. My argument was with the statements:

"Most of those players don't give a shit about the city of Detroit...and why would they???"
"why should they care about that shit hole of a city?"

OK, once again, I probably should have just moved on - maybe they shouldn't have affected me, but they did, and I responded - that is all.

What do you expect from the most ignorant person on these boards? Acts as if he is speaking for the majority when hes really in the minority

LOL -

. . . and you think this isn't happening in Detroit?

Then why didn't Nate want to inspire years ago..? But as far as devastation's, NO floods vs bankruptcy, not the same thing.

As far as current shit holes we might live in, i don't currently live in a shit hole. If it became a shit hole, I would do what any sane person would do - move. And no, I wouldn't care about my recent shit hole.

I'm liking the idea of fencing in Detroit, and keeping all the slime in one hole.

If you say so, but in the long wrong bankruptcy will be a good thing. It was overdo..

One' man's shithole, is another man's city of gold. You don't live in a shithole because that is your opinion. Other's may differ.

Doubt it. But if we're being real here, I can't see anywhere else being more of a shit hole than Detroit.

Right because all of the police, teachers and fireman (and any of the other poor living and working there) deserve to have their retirement and services taken away.

Cleveland? That's a joke.

There are slums in every major city. Again it is a matter of degree, of course, and your opinion of it is worth no more than mine.

And that's too bad. But as Spock said "the needs of many outweigh the needs of the one."

It might be a fictional character but it makes sense..

I guess that works great until your city goes bankrupt, or, better yet, change it to mean you lose your 401K due to some other tragedy. It is a matter of perspective. Now all of sudden the needs of the one become pretty important to you.

You just give up without a fight, and move on without your 401K? Interesting. You sure there wouldn't be a double-standard there?
