Lions moving Reiff to guard?

"According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, the Lions are "strongly" considering moving OT Riley Reiff to guard in 2013.

The Lions' website previously reported a position switch was possible, but this suggests Reiff won't be a serious candidate for the Lions' expected vacancy at right tackle. It's surprising the Lions might throw in the towel on Reiff as a tackle less than a year after taking him at No. 23, but his short arms and average athleticism made it a possibility from the start. GM Martin Mayhew is probably wishing he could have a redo on last year's first round. "

Ugh, hope this isn't true, I hope we didn't waste the 23rd pick on a guard who has the body type of a thin LT. If this is true, how much more can we take? Does this make him a bust? Are you fucking kidding me? There were several highly rated guards taken right after we picked Reiff. I know he got hurt, but Dicastro was taken with the 24th pick and he was looking like a future perrenial pro bowler before the injury.

Hahaha yeah just ignore the 1.5 game he played at left tackle and call him a bust based on a dumb rumor. The only way he moves to guard is if we have two starting tackles in Backus and a high drafted player at pick 5.

Peterman's gone, if it took moving Reiff to G to get that done then so be it.

Weird ill take the glass is half empty side. First we play cherilus over him...a guy we dont even consider resigning. Now the plan is to play fox over him? Wow. If this story is true than i hope the thinking is backus and fischer at tackle.

Knowing the Lions and their draft picks they will take a LT at #5 and play him exclusively as the FB on the goal line!

Reiff was a rookie and did solid when he played LT. Just because he can play guard doesn't make him a bust at tackle per the article. He was a solid tackle the limited snaps I saw. Plus they haven't even take a snap of OTAs yet to make such assumptins.

I'd be ecstatic if a line of Backus/Sims/Raiola/Reiff/Fox did well. Especially Fox to let another Mayhew mid rounder shine when actually healthy. 2014 they could still shift Reiff back to left tackle when Backus retires.

ANOTHER mayhew mid rounder? lmao.

We drafted Reiff to play LT. If he plays guard that is a failure right there. He certainly doesn't look like he has the build of the average NFL guard, seems like more of a lighter tackle who would use his feet and not his strength or size. Now he's going to block the 330 lb beasts that play DT in the NFL? Hope it's not a true rumor, but this is the Lions, so it wouldn't surprise me at all.

this was said of him anyways and i believe its why he dropped a little later in the draft..the idea was..he can play tackle..or if not..then move him to guard..we don't have much talent at either position..so not a big deal..

synics would say if were not very talented at either position then why the fuck isnt our 1st round pick good enough to play at tackle. And if our 1st round pick is good enough to play at tackle and were playing him at guard.....then why the hell are we doing that? lol. Playing reiff at guard is not the way to maximize his value imo. And if fox can stay healthy....i still think he sucks (thats a big IF). Like i said....i hope to god the plan is were shooting for Fischer or this move doesnt make any sense (if its even true). If we get Fischer than this lpan actually makes some sense and upgrades our line tremendously. Guess we will have to wait n see.

maybe he just suits the guard position better?...what is hard to understand about that?

I agree with 'Hughes. Lets maximize his value and do to that he should play LT. If we draft a LT at 5, then he should play RT.

well to maximize his value put him at QB..then it will be at its full potential... what the fuck are you guys talking about? ..just because you stick him somewhere doesn't mean it'll work..you maximize his value by putting him at the position that best fits him...if they think it's at guard..then put him at guard.

What's hard to understand is that if we thought that he would probably end up a guard, why not draft Decastro, who everyone had as a perennial pro bowler coming out? If Mayhew thought he would be our future LT and now he is switching positions just to find a spot, then that is a shitty draft pick.

especially if it means Fox is our day 1 starting RT lmao. Then this plan becomes dumb real fast and the reiff pick takes a hit.

I actually liked the Reiff pick, but you know what, I'm not an NFL GM. With the Lion's track record, this is not good. And GTFO of here with the Fox BS, he has barely practiced in 3 years.

maybe they liked reiff better? i don't know..let's at least wait and see how he plays once he starts before we say its a shitty draft pick...if he turns out to be a good guard as a late first round pick..that's fine with me

i liked it when i thought a 10 year starting lt fell to us that low or at worst a 10 year starting rt fell to us that low. But as of right now hes a fb that couldnt beat out gosder who's apparently moving to rg cause he couldnt beat out a guy thats been inured for 3 years. w....t...f.
