Lions new OC's view on Stafford

i have to admit, it should be considered extremely impressive to have a guy able to replicate his exact performance from 2 years prior. he must have studied his 2011 films for hours to get down the exact placement of his body, the exact calls at the LoS, calling timeouts at the exact same point. that's pretty impressive.

oh, you mean those INTs didn't happen exactly the same way? the TDs were different too? no kidding??? huh, so then i guess he did NOT do exactly what he did in 2011.

come on...LKP went over the film and charted every play. He knows!!!

A few heaters went out in Ford Field, dropped the temperature a couple degrees.

Not duplicated exactly dumbass. But same type of production with different factors causing his stats to change. Adjust for drop rate and weapon changes(Burelson/Broyles/Calvin/Pettigrew injuries) and Lions forced turnovers, it's clear Stafford was the same, just had a more difficult job to do so the wins didn't bear it out.

Give me 100 plays where it was Staffords fault.
Describe the down and distance, the score, the play call and what happened on the plays and why it was Staffords fault.

Show me a game in the last half of the season that Stafford looked worthy of starting in the NFL.

9 plays in well seventeen.

21 plays in well sixteen.

16 plays in week fifteen.

11 plays in week fourteen.

29 plays in week thirteen.

14 plays in week twelve.

That's 100 and less than a half a season.

In all honesty, I'm fairly neutral on Stafford. I see him as a top 15 QB with the talent to be top 5. It's clear that they brought in coaches to help Stafford out, and hopefully they'll be able to work with him so one day his production level will meet or even surpass his talent level. I do think he can be better at times, but then again I remember he's throwing to Kris fucking Durham. Believe what you want, but the fate of this franchise rests solely on Stafford. Assign blame wherever you want, but the fact is if Stafford doesn't put up good numbers (due to whatever reason) then the Lions aren't winning games. I don't believe this team is capable of winning if the QB does not play well, some teams can get away with it because of a solid defense and/or run game, but not the Lions.

To put it simply, the bashing is over the top and the blameless coddling is over the top. This board and the whole Stafford debate has turned into the Detroit Lions version of american politics.

Bottom Line: 7-9...unacceptable, get on board the 2014 train

I agree that Stafford is currently a middle of the road QB. He has a great arm but has not demonstrated anything else. He is a lot like Jeff George. He is young so he can improve. Let's hope he is mature enough to listen to his coaches and he gets better!

Thank you Grandy and thank you Tom. It's to hear from a few people with realistic viewpoints.

top 5? did you just throw a number out? So you think he can better than EVERY qb not named brady, manning, brees, ryan?

Last year he was a bottom 15 qb that played his way out of the playoffs. He has the talent to be a top 15 qb imo.

Look, if what im hearing is accurate and MOST people on here think in order for Stafford to improve he needs a better WR corps, a more consistent oline etc etc etc....I got bad news for you....hes not a top 5 qb. Top 5 qbs find ways to produce and work around those obstacles....they don't use those obstacles as an excuse.

Peyton lost the best LT in the game early this year. Brady lost every single starting WR and TE he had this year except Julian edleman....who he turned into a 110 catch WR. But with Stafford if Bush goes down for a half we just toss are hands up in the air and blame that? wtf? The guy sucked ass this year lol....I don't care how much people "break down the tape"...he sucked ass.

edit: had to edit in a quote I read from the comments on this story on espn lol

"Stafford isn't broken...hes actually just really good at sucking."

I can see Stafford as one of those guys that would be hard to coach. He seems to come off as somebody that thinks they already have all the answers and refuses to listen to any criticism. Hopefully as he ages and matures a bit he will grow out of this.

Keywords here are "can be"

can be

Keep that in mind

And I'm talking numbers, he was arguably the 5th best QB numbers-wise in 2011. I don't think it's impossible that he repeats that sometime in the next few seasons.

Well the lions could have won 12 games last year if they had a top 5 qb....so tell him to hurry up.

I used to think Harrington would turn a corner and be good one day. We all hope Matt turns the corner and is much more consistent. I just see his low accuracy while he was in college and know he's a gunslinger, ala Brett Favre.

I haven't completely lost hope on him but the hope is dwindling. And if he was on the new rookie scale or making Wilson money I'd feel better about it.

So if that's not realistic enough blame 56 years of mostly failure. Something hit recently, I wasn't like this last year, 2012, and before that most of my life I was LKP.

But I'm not negative all the time like some might suggest, it's mostly because of our QB and response to he's P. Manning and 2013 and 2011 are alike.

I had a Labrador retriever once who was coddled a little too much, so he thought he was alpha. Took some work, but got him back in line with the proper way of doing things and he turned into a great dog.

Stafford is kind of like that. Previous regime had no accountability. If Stafford is going to get there, he needs to be knocked off his Shangri-La perch and get working. I don't blame him, though, I blame the previous regime. Let's hope the new staff brings some seriously tough love.

Completely agree with you. I'm stuck somewhere between LKP and MHughes on this issue. Probably exactly in the middle.

Plus, look what the Lions have done. Head Coach is a former QB coach. OC is a former QB coach. And they still have the QB coach that they will bring in. Not sure if they have yet, but you can see that they're going to be all over Matt to make sure he lives up to the potential he showed in 2011. He will not be handled like a spoiled child anymore. That's about as positive as you can get.

There's no point in going off about how bad Stafford was in the second half last year or how mediocre he was in 2012. The lions clearly have a plan. Let's see how it plays out before we cry about things.

shouldn't take dogs 3 years to get fixed....
