Get StartedI think I'd prefer nothing over Best vs McCluster
Best had many over 100 all purpose yards. Bucs game, KC game, Bears game, 49ers game (he didn't even finish), Eagles game in 2010. He had 9 healthy games out of 22 (turf toe). 5 of them were good. Effiicent vs Cowboys. Huge game changing play at Vikings in 2011 (60 yard reception). Best was a 20+ rusher and receiving king.
80 yards per game rushing *16=1,260 yards. Enough with the 100 yard junk. All purpose Best was the man.
The combo of Best as a runner, receiver and home run threat was great. It got defenses to have to account for him in the box and opened things up for Calvin.
Best was a great pick by Mayhew. Then bad luck struck.
This is from his NFL.com draft profile
WEAKNESSES Best lacks the prototypical size of an every down NFL running back. Does not have the strength to consistently break tackles or push the pile. Durability is a real concern after missing time due to various ailments throughout career. Is not a power runner. Will need to improve his blocking ability in the passing game.
To dismiss the injury concern is foolish, that was the red flag on the guy. That is what made him the risk. The biggest concern on the guy became reality. That's not bad luck, that's gambling. Lions gambled and lost. Becomes a bad pick.

blah blah blah 5 tds total blah blah blah.
Just another example of a high round mayhew pick not producing to the value he was projected at. And to say "its not mayhews fault best got injured".....fuck yes it is? THE GUY WAS INJURED before he ever stepped foot in an NFL locker room. Our health team is like the worst in the league. We put Best out there with a mush brain, we use calvin as a decoy on a injured ankle and he injures it worse. We put Bush out there on a bum ankle....bush....a guy that RELIES on his shiftiness and cutting.....we put out there on a bum ankle and he hurts it worse.
The only thing ive ever seen in football as dumb as our medical staff is Michigan putting in Shane with an obvious concussion to the point he couldn't even walk lmao.
edit....awaiting all the responses telling me how much TDs don't matter lmao....
I have zero problems with the Lions picking Best.
I have a ton of problems with the Lions picking Best in the first round. I have even more problems with them trading up to do it.
And I said it then. The guys cabbage done slid off his plate. There was no way his melon wasn't squished.
Had they taken him in the 3rd round, I would still be defending the pick. But to trade back into the first, and give up other picks, to take a guy who's got clear medical red flags is insane.
And honestly, I think it's a testament to him as a player and a man that he played as many games for us as he did after the unreal amount of damage his cranium took in college.
Had he hit the NFL with no injury history, he would have been a GREAT running back. He had all the tools to be something special. The problem is, he hit the NFL far far from healthy.
