Looking forward

You assume Martin is better than Taylor and Webster. I disagree strongly with rookie Martin better than Taylor in year 2. Webster we will see. And if you Jones and Taylor, you have the backup on the closed side. They wanted an open side end to play behing Ansah. That's Webster. Martin may not fit that.

Dennard would have been a reach. Reaches won't matter if Dennard is a good player. But experience is valued and I like Houston and Slay better. Houston healthy and Slay in year 2 I'll take over rookie Dennard. And so will Mayhew. And now you guys have too.

We have to play the hand we are dealt with the Lions. Sometimes we just don't like the cards our GM picked. DE and DBs needed to be addressed with more than Ihedigbo.

The dude wants us to be like New Orleans yet we don't have Brees..I hope this guy realizes Stafford has limitations ..

And you act like Mayhew ignored the defense. New aggressive DC, Ihedigbo and Van Noy, plenty of picks in previous drafts, Quin, Levy, Houston and Jones last free agency (on multi year deals). The defense has been plenty addressed. It's not a one year thing to address something. I know you like shiny new players for some reason but sometimes keeping the same guys is just as good.

The best thing for this defense. The offense of Detroit not turning the ball over 34 times. And Detroit getting leads with a good offense forcing the opposing team to be one dimensional pass would help the defense too. Getting offense better can help the defense.

DE and DB was addressed. LAST OFFSEASON. Quin, Slay, Jones, Ansah, Taylor. MULTI YEAR DEALS. Now Ihedigbo for Delmas.

If Jones played 16 games and stunk up the joint, then you may have a point, but it was an injury. Houston was more injury too, not lack of talent. And Slay was inexperience, not lack of talent.

Ihedigbo, he put a new band-aid on top of an old band-aid. That's all they did. He didn't address the wound.

Kareem martin sliding to the 3rd was great value at a great need. We got a back up center. If you knew anything about football you'd know that even a rotational de gets more snaps and production than a back up center. and you have nooooo clue how they will use van noy...zip...zero.

Dennard wouldnt have been a reach in rd 1. Keep making excuses for him not addressing defensive needs. You did it in fa...now ur doing it after the draft. And ill laugh soooo hard when we have carey and tapp on the field.

This article tells you how they plan to use Van Noy

Injuries are a big part of every NFL roster. I'm not comfortable with the depth at DE and DB. Jones in my opinion shouldn't be the starter but a depth guy.

Ansah, Jones, Taylor should make you comfortable. The talent is there. What did you say when we got Jones last offseason?

And Webster is as much of an unknown as Chricton or Martin and backups up the other DE spot better (open side). That spot is about speed and Webster has that big time. 2nd best 40, great shuttles, great vertical and broad jump.

Who cares how fast he is..someday people will realize we don't need a speed guy, we need a good route runner and good hands guy..

I liked Jones as depth guy last season. Jones is a solid but unspectacular DE.

Crichton and Martin performed well against a high level of college football. Webster performed well vs a lower level of college football. Listen, I was the first one to bring up Webster as a prospects. I'm not sure he will be good but like the pick. But would have preferred Martin or Crichton in addition to Webster.

Chricton actually went before our 3rd round pick to the Vikings. So scratch him off the list unless you want him over Van Noy.

Martin we could have had over Swanson. But then we are getting a Round 4 center instead of Webster. Would Swanson be there? And Webster fits and is higher on the depth chart. If Jones/Taylor backup the closed end, we needed an open end behind Ansah (see Willie Young type). That sounds like Webster to me, not Martin.

If we kept our original 4th, that's Russell Bodine instead of Swanson. Stork was gone early 4th to NE. Maybe Swanson is there, maybe not.

If we are talking the Webster pick with Martin in Round 3 (since the trade already happened), Corey Linsley (round 5) Luke Bowanko (Round 6) and Matthew Baradis (Round 6) would be the next centers available. Who? I'll take Swanson over all three of those no name centers.

So if we took Martin, it looks like Swanon, Stork and Bodine would probably have been gone by the Webster or Lawson pick. Meaning the Lions would have been royally screwed at backup center. And of course that would mean people would be bitching about our center depth and replacement plan for Raiola instead of our DE depth (which is actually fine with Taylor/Webster/Tapp).

Gabe Ikard or Tyler Larsen were both UDFA. Either would have been solid backup/future centers. I would have preferred a more impactful player for 2014 in the 3rd round.

I like Swanson more than those guys too but I do like Ikard.

I like Webster fitting behind Ansah better than Martin too. Therefore, I agree with what the Lions did. It would be pretty risky to hope Ikard becomes a UDFA AND the Lions land him over 31 teams vying for him. Maybe we lose that Lucas guy too if we have to give Ikard more signing bonus money.

We won't truly know until we see 2014 and beyond. Martin could suck balls, Webster could be good and Raiola could get hurt and Jones/Taylor/Ansah could stay healthy. Or it could be the total opposite. We'll see.

Moncrief and Ikard/Larsen instead of Swanson and Jones is what I would have preferred if we had to cover those positions only. Granted this is hindsight on who was available.

Again you are assuming a little that we get those guys as UDFAs. Mayhew probably tries but there are 31 other teams too.

I'm not saying get them as UDFA. I'm saying we could have drafted them in the 6th.

I like Moncrief alot. People would have flipped their shit with Ebron and Moncrief in Round 1 and 3.

And you know what's funny
When we draft BPA like Round 1 people get pissed
When we draft for need like Round 3 people get pissed.
Can't win. Do your thing Mayhew.
