Luke Fickell to MSU

Well, there's some smoke there coming from Comparoni and several other Rivals insiders. Apparently MSU has been on talks with him for a couple weeks and the offer is on the table now and Fickell just has to accept.

Also, Cincinnati hired a new AD in December who put a contract extension offer on the table for Fickell after the season was over. Fickell hasn't signed the extension.

MSU AD all but ruled out Tressell being the HC in 2020.

Fickell is a great recruiter, has great mid-west ties and has a similar background to Coach D, but he's younger. Would check all the boxes.

Offer reportedly is 5 years $24 Million with incentives to get him to $30 Million. Would be a top 10ish to 15ish salary in the country. Right where you'd expect for a school with the 13th most sports revenue in the country.

It would be a good hire because MSU isn't going to get a better name especially this late in the game.

$4.8mm/yr before incentives would make him tied with Ferentz at 18th based on 2019 numbers, $.41mm/yr more than Dantonio got.

TV revenue is ruining the game. Clearly, all these guys get paid way too much, esp ADs and admins at state schools making $.5mm to $1mm+ per year for jobs that aren't that difficult. This is the state of modern college athletics.

Luke Fickell apparently hasn't been communicating with Cincinnati recruits today...on signing day.

Also, a private jet traveled from Cincy to Lansing last night.

I think late in the game is not a big deal at all. Who were we going to get a month ago? Matt Rheul went to the NFL for an ungodly amount of money.

Fickell would have been #1 on our list this off season no matter when it happened. And it sounds like there's a strong possibility this was in the works for quite some time.

Kind of slim pickins at this point - Narduzzi and I saw Matt Campbell's name mentioned but he has a $9.4mm buyout if he leaves this year. I don't know anything about Campbell but I prefer Fickell over Narduzzi and I prefer both of them over Tressell.

As a born and bred Ohio kid who was 2 time state champion wrestler and elite football recruit, hopefully he can do better in Ohio than the Chris Freys and Joe Baccis of the world. It'd be nice if he could compete in PA, IL, NJ, etc as well. It looks like it's not going to be any easier than it was when Meyer was around considering what Day has done in recruiting thus far and Harbaugh getting first dibs on whatever Ohio talent Day doesn't get but that's not any different than what we're already dealing with.

Obviously whoever it is needs to do better everywhere, not just Ohio and the rest of B1G country but those are the critical regions. Even if there was someone who could recruit 4 star talent nationally, they're probably not the kind of coaches that would consider the MSU job.

Cincy's top recruit, 4 star Qb Evan Prater today: “Coach Gino texted my mom and said take a deep breath,” Prater said. “He doesn’t know what he’s going to do. Everybody’s waiting for that moment for the news to break. We’ll see where it goes from there. I’m looking forward to staying home with the Bearcats.”

why not throw more fuel on the fire. Fickell's brother just told me he traded text msgs w/ him last night and he would not confirm or deny anything.

Cincinnati had a coaches only meeting at 7 am this morning, not unusual considering it's signing day. But there are Cincinnati insiders saying he is gone.

Fickell checks all the boxes, but any coach is going to be a wait and see situation. 2020 he gets a pass, but I think we'd want to see progress and a bowl game in 2021.

I'd expect that he'd bring some of his staff with him from Cincy.

If this was getting negotiated for weeks, that is quite a good job done by Beekman. Really would be a nice get, he'd have been our #1 target no matter when Dantonio resigned.

Radio sports personality in Columbus said on the air that Fickell will be announced as the new MSU coach today. Taking that with a grain of salt.

Looking like it should start to leak out more today, but will be announced officially tomorrow.

All I know is that not having to think about Jim Bollman, Mark Staten, and Dave Warner coaching our players anymore is going to be pretty sweet.

Tennessee Titans offered the Cincy DC a week ago and he turned him down. Maybe he's getting the HC gig at Cincy, or more likely he'll be our new DC, he's really good. Also, Cincy's D Line coach left a couple weeks ago and has not been replaced, maybe Ron Burton stays on for MSU.

Tressel can recruit and he'll have some young energetic assistants. A new high profile hire gives a boost to recruiting, should see us bring in some 4 stars this next cycle, could be fun.

Or maybe it's all for nothing and Fickell decides to stay at Cincinnati...

You the Rivals poster saying that too?

I don't post on rivals but I am good friends with his younger brother - we worked together and watched a bunch of college football together for about 5 years before he moved back to Columbus.

he's probably not sure if he can handle that brutal Michigan press ;)

I can't think of any other reason for him to delay the decision - Drew Sharp can be a real meanie.

Edit: apologies to any who may have been offended, I had no idea Drew Sharp was dead.

this could help if we're still in the running for any of the QBs in the transfer portal.

MSU Board of Trustees reportedly meeting today, I'd assume they'd have to approve the deal and then it would get announced tomorrow.

Also, Luke Fickell's son just started following MSU Football on Twitter.

Fickell just said that he hasn't been in contact with anyone from msu, just Dantonio. So unless Dantonio is doing the hiring, most of this thread is shit.
