Get StartedTed Thomspon missed the playoffs 3 of his 4 years too with a HOF QB inheriting a much better team than the 0-16 Lions.. Year 4 he blew chunks too with Aaron Rodgers at the helm going from playoff team to 6-10 with a lot of closs loses. And that was in a very weak 2008 NFC North with the winless Millen Lions for 2 of those 6 wins. Give Mayhew this year to prove the haters wrong.
This Lions team has a ton of talent and is a playoff caliber team.
You're assessing them incorrectly is what you are doing and blaming Mayhew because of a terrible assessment. Get on the Mayhew train or get off. Saying Mayhew sucks when he doesn't is practically rooting against the Lions.
Btw, Rodgers went from 6 wins (first year), to 11, 10, 15, 11.
Bad team sure, but we went from 10 to 4 in his 3rd and 4th year. That's a big difference.
No it isn't. And I suppose to say Spievey was great when he sucked. I want Mayhew gone, plain and simple - then maybe we can get someone better and win.
Millen any year you could bash because it was obvious. Mayhew is completely different and has loaded this team with talent and depth. He learns from his mistakes. He does make good trades and free agent signings which get completely ignored on here. He's a very good GM and the Lions players need to keep their turnover concentration to prove that for us like they did in 2011. 2011 was earned. 2011 was their potential when the Lions stay relatively healthy. There number of injured games for starters and backups increased tremendously in 2012. It's not coincidence that is one big REASON, not excuse but REASON they lost 12 games among other things (turnovers and 2 games of special teams being others).
Stafford led the Lions to 22 PPG in 2011 and 2012 on long drive offense. 6 less defenisve scores and 10 less short fields leading a drop in PPG. Stafford wasn't the problem.
Pack went from 13 to 6. Even worse drop than 10 to 4.
Just pointing out one great pick by Mayhew. No 1st round misses by Mayhew. That is very impressive and bad injury luck in Round 2. Delmas, Broyles, Slay and LeShoure can easily make everyone do a 180 on his 2nd round reputation this year. Great trades, great free agency. Mayhew does very little wrong. You won't hit on them all. Thompson has 2nd round busts. Brian Brohm, Pat Lee. Thompson has more draft picks because he has 4 more years as a GM.
I understand the negativity of folks like Mitch and Hughes on this board. We are all lions fans our team hasn't given us much to be positive about in any of our lifetimes.
I think Mayhew has done an alright job. Not exceptional. Not anywhere near as bad as teams like Oakland and St. Louis.
I think we are still headed in the right direction.
Firing a manager or coach usually signals rebuilding. It's the time for new parts, big time trades, and new faces. I don't see where any of that helps this team.
Schwartz hasn't been an amazing coach, and he's got some glaring weaknesses to be sure. But he knows his players and they are growing in his system. He's the right guy in my opinion to stay at the helm of this team a few more years.
I don't think it's time to throw the baby out with the bath water. Rebuilding from a winless team was never going to be an easy job and I think we are dealing Mayhew and Schwartz pretty ugly hand expecting a total turn around in four to five seasons. It took Millen eight years to completely cripple this team and destroying a team is always easier than building one.
The Lions have some big challenges left, but a lot fewer holes than where we started this ride, and better depth behind a lot of our players. We're still trending up, with a few bumps in the road here and there, but it's not the downward spiral we're used to.
And 2008 was way weaker than 2012 in the NFC North.
Year 3 to year 4 Mayhew did fine but got screwed with injuries and turnovers as did all fans who properly assessed them and know they are talented..
Plus he had cap restraints but made the right calls AT THE TIME using the cap space to get Avril back (after 2 good pass rush seasons), Tulloch/Backus/Hill re-signed plus the restricted free agents Levy/SLH/Hilliard and had a good 2012 draft despite the injuries to those picks.
why do you keep going on and on about 2012 being a good thing? We barely made the playoffs after a couple miracle wins and then got blasted by New Orleans.
If stafford is the future of this franchise and he doesnt progress in this offense....then i think after this year you need a new offense. Id like to see if our offense could flourish under a new coach and new ocord. Bill obrien would be my guy if we have another shaky season. Hand over the dcord reigns to washburn.
Changing coaches constantly was one of Millens major problems.
Schwartz is a good coach. Passionate is good, time management is great, his challenges are more wins than losses, the team is behind him. He has a very good defensive mind and when relatively healthy they have the talent.
