Mayhews draft success

Houston is a good number 1 if you actually watched him and looked at his numbers. He compares to Tillman well.

Like Hughes said, they play in two completely different defenses. Plus, Houston is a smaller CB who is solid and has good recovery speed. Tillman is a large CB with a physical presence at the line, who is very adept at causing turnovers, namely causing fumbles.
They're two different kinds of players and I'd be fine with either one. Houston is a great #2 CB and a solid #1, but I'd love if Slay developed into the #1 and we could have Houston as our #2.

He compares to his stats well of a number 1 CB. Houston is a good number 1 is the proper assessment.

LKP is awesome! But seriously, to mention;"Draft success and Mayhew" in the same sentence.......... If you look at all of his 2nd rd and or 2nd picks only, the bottom line is abysmal. Strictly bottom line: Pettigrew; Hands of stone. Delmas; Hurt.
Best; Hurt. Titus; LOL. Leshoure;LOL. Broyles;Hurt, but who knows? Prob will suck. Slay; Hurt, but who knows? Does any reasonable fan here actually believe Mayhew has done anything resembling credible drafting? He's not as pathetic as MM was but he is not too far behind. Thinking you're the sharpest guy in the draft room is very, very dangerous.

Outside of the 1st round, Mayhew has done a below-average job drafting in past years. I liked this year's draft a lot more (Hughes will chalk it up to being all Xanders, which might be true).

Since when is Slay hurt? Last I checked he's completely healthy and played well in the preseason. Broyles has been hurt, but I think he'll be a great slot receiver. Time will tell. I'm going to the opener this Sunday and I'm excited for the season! Let's see how they do against the Vikings and then go from there.

Pett was a first rd pick and slay isn't hurt at this time. I think Mayhew is average at drafting putting an emphasis on physical talent which doesn't always translate. I have watched the lions for a long time and this is by far the most talented team I have seen, will that translate to wins??? I don't know, but its going to be fun to watch, D-line, CJ, Bush now that's a good time.

I think its going to be a great year to watch mainly cause of how inconsistent we are as a team:

The offense is supposed to be a good unit but the oline is make shift and untested, the WRs we have no depth and they cant stay healthy, and we cant run worth a lick.

I keep hearing for years now how were supposed to have this fearsome dline but they did squat last year, 4 of the guys that will be getting a lot of playtime on the dline I love but are brand new to the team, lbs blow and secondary is still shaky at best. Or I guess you can put it how I always hear it..."our secondary is solid when delmas is back there."....but hes never back there.

SOoooooo...all in all we could be real good.....or maybe we will be real bad. Toss in one of the toughest shedules in the NFL and the fact we haven't beat anyone in our division in 2 years....meh....should be a crazy season.

I agree with everything except the LB's. Tulloch is an above average LB with knee problems. They slowed him down last year and he is supposed to be healthy this year so fingers crossed, but I think we can all agree he is not the problem. Levy is average to below average, he has a problem lowering his pads so he comes in high and gets shrugged off by runners. I liked him better with his rookie contract and feel he is slightly over paid, but with Tulloch's knees they may have overpaid for insurance. I'm not a fan of the Sam backer, Palmer is serviceable but not the long term answer. He tends to over run plays but can bring it when lines people up. Lewis and Whitehead are kinda unknowns and what I saw in the preseason I didn't like. I'm hoping they put them in positions they normally wouldn't be in to see how they would respond, in my opinion they sucked. They are both young so I'm still holding out hope. With all that said they are an average to below average group but last year our DE's were steaming hot piles of shit in the run game. when you can block a DE with TE (Avril) that puts the LB's in a bad spot where the G's can get to the second level. that happened a lot last year. This year our DE's are bigger and will be able to hold up at the point of attack, that will let the LB's run free to make plays. So an Average group of LB's should be able to play at an above average level. Levy can cover and so can Tulloch so they aren't a complete liability in pass coverage but talented TE's will still feast.

I don't know if its a coincidence or not but when Delmas is in there the D looks completely different. I'm not sure if its the coaches having confidence with him out there so the play calls are different or if its his attitude lighting a fire in the D but they are noticeably better with him in there. I'm hoping the new turf shows his knees some love and he is able to play the entire season. I remember a couple years back an interview with a Lions player talking about what he told a friend that was going to play against them, his only advice was to bring knee pads cause the field was harder than a rock. Its no wonder we have key players with knee issues CJ, Delmas, Tulloch off the top of my head.

all correct....except for the levy observation. Even when hes 1 v 1 in the hole he whiffs lol.

It was the right call to get Avril back for one year AT THE TIME AFTER 2 GOOD PASS RUSH YEARS IN A ROW, and it was the right call to move on at DE after 2012. Mayhew never made the wrong call at DE.

Mayhew reportedly offered him a 3 year $30 mil contract (when his market price was half that) and that moron Avril turned him down (when two fools meet). How is that making the right call to move on (I call it dodging a bullet).

We definitely dodged a bullet there. But in the grand scheme of things, drafts are all about options, not players.

Every team in football, with the exception of the Redskins, likes to have plenty of options headed into draft day. From a manager's perspective, it's better to have a mediocre overpaid DE, than to be locked into drafting one. It's better to have a sub-par starting capable QB, than to be locked into drafting one.

This is especially true in a weaker draft class.

The mentality is that you want to be drafting upgrades, not replacements.

It's the same reason Oakland traded for Matt Flynn, Buffalo traded for Kevin Kolb, and Arizona traded for Carson Palmer. None of those teams really wanted those guys, but they didn't want to be "forced" into taking Geno Smith with an early pick.

If Avril had accepted the offer, it would have given Mayhew the ability to move around a little more, maybe trade back and stockpile picks, or even move up and take a LT. A CB might have been in play at #5, or even a LB.

Was it overpaying for Avril? Well, the guy got a lot less money elsewhere and now he's a backup, so yeah, it's pretty obvious it was too much cheddar, but what you are buying is options, not necessarily the player. And more often than not, that actually works out.

I don't blame Mayhew at all for making the offer, but I'm also glad that hindsight being what it is, Avril moved on.

I like that Ansah.

Its fair to upgrade the reiff pick. Its also fair to downgrade the pettigrew pick.

Very, very, VERY true.

Pettigrew has regressed. And, maybe it's just me....but he looks in worse shape this year than in any past year. Way to be ready for the season, BP!

Contract year. If he doesn't do something to turn is career around, someone will overpay him and he'll be gone.

Make it right Pett, or say goodbye.
