Meyer Retiring

press conferences are stupid. the questions are usually stupid and the people asking them are typically jock sniffing nerds.

But I will contend that JH needs to at least be somewhat personable. Not even much, just somewhat. Otherwise, it's not that important, I suppose.

I don't think he's a dick like Mike Leach or Bobby Knight would have been ...I just think he's a weird guy and doesn't like to be asked the same question over and over.

Plus, I will add this insight. A couple friends of mine got to spend the "day with Coach Harbaugh" and met with him for an hour in his office. Afterwards, Coach invited the four of them down on the field for practice. The team personnel who let them on the field said "nobody" had ever been invited on to the field to stay and that everyone else would have left. Then, after practice, they got another hour+ and tour of the facilities, etc.

I asked Dr Dave why he thought they got so much time with Harbaugh and he guessed it was because they never once asked him about the team, coaching or any football-specific topics. They talked about leadership, motivation, growing up in A2 and things that Harbaugh liked talking about.

I think he sees PCs for what they are for the most part...

There's a spectrum. He's no Bobby Knight or Woody Hayes, but he also can't just shake off something that upsets him like most people over 50. Ideally, a good sport is gracious in winning or in losing. If Harbaugh was just some guy you know, and he brought his behavior to your rec league softball league, people would ask 'what's his problem'. But for an NCAA football coach that needs to maintain an insane level of drive, we make allowances. As far as things fans decide to tolerate in their programs, it's small potatoes compared to what happens elsewhere.

I hate this thread.

It's about Urban Meyer retiring but somehow became a bitchfest about our coach, lead by rival fans who have nothing to do with either UM or OSU.

The program is heading in the right direction in terms of depth and performance. 10, 9, 8, 10 (11?) win seasons in years 1-4 with an 0-1 mark vs nd and (what should be 3-1) 2-2 vs msu ..yes losing to osu sucks, but all this other shit is nonsense.

If you don't like Harbaugh as a M fan, fine. Name his replacement who will magically reverse a near 20yr trend of losing to ohio state. Because otherwise, I think the patience of getting UM back to where we expect is on pace.

Jim Harbaugh is not unsportsmanlike, he just runs out of patience with the stupid, idiat (sic) media faster than other coaches. And I've seen Dantonio go off during pressers and it's actually kinda refreshing.

And we all have fond memories of the classic Lloyd Carr halftime interviews. I always sat up in my chair waiting with anticipation.

Is there anybody that fits in this category?

I'm sorry for feeding the trolls and helping things to go off topic, but I don't think we've got any fans here that don't like Harbaugh.

"Why would you ask a stupid question like that?"

Makes it even more gratifying to recall when I interviewed Lloyd in the early-90s as an ESPN stringer he said, "good job."

To get back on track, I think it's easy, after the suspension, the health issues, and now the retirement, to forget that whatever happened with Zach Smith, the issue of Meyer asking how to set his cell phone to automatically delete old emails followed by his phone having those setting on when it was looked at was never really owned up to. I think there was even a legal obligation to not delete texts and nobody followed up on the texts being gone.

OSU misses playoff; Urban resigns. Absolutely no connection whatsoever. We'll see if UW has the sand to ruin his farewell. I'm not the schadenfreude sort, but I'll shed no tears over OSU losing say, 34-33 on a last-second field goal, repeated because an OSU player ran into the kicker on a clean wide-left first-attempt.

38-13 in 4 seasons with 1 game to go.

I'd say that is a good thing.

TheWolverines24 is one.

I forgot how awesome Lloyd was. Just wish he would have surrounded himself with some better people. He might have 2-3 more championships with some better assistants.

I love this thread. And for one of those rare times, Vic, I agree with you. There is no one else for Michigan. Harbaugh is a favorite son and a Michigan man through and through. M needs to ride with him. He will serve you fans and the University well. I truly believe that.

But you may need to temper your expectations. Because as someone else put it, it's not unreasonable to think that Ryan Day is in line to be the next great college football coach. It's probably going to happen. You know it's true.

Is this real or not?

We, as fans, were constantly complaining when Lloyd was the coach. We wanted him to open up the offense and throw the ball more. Sound familiar?

Lloyd was a great coach. Now we know the difference, because we had to watch Michigan under 2 really bad coaches. Lloyd won many big 10 titles and a NC. Lloyd didn't have to rebuild the program after 2 really bad coaches f'd it up.

Lloyd regularly lost 3 or 4 games in a season. Fans would be all up in arms over that nowadays.

Oh! That's right. He thinks Meyer is waaaay better anyway.

Meyer is a much better coach. Track record proves it. Harbaugh has never even won a conference title in college football.

I'm fine with Harbaugh as our head coach. He's a good coach, just not great. I wish he'd be more hands off with the offensive philosophy and hire an OC that runs a modern passing game.

I've come to accept that this is as good as it gets for the program. We are nationally irrelevant, but we may compete for a conference title from time to time.

I think you should also take the off the field stuff into consideration when you're making this kind of assessment. Before this last game, it was pretty clear that we were closing the gap in comparison to OSU. We weren't there, but you're talking about closing the gap at a time when OSU is frequently a playoff team. This is top tier stuff and we were getting there under Harbaugh. This last game is shocking and I don't know how to diagnose it. I don't think anyone else does either. If it was so obvious, other coaches, paid millions to be among the best in the nation, would have done the same thing. Alternately, if someone at OSU is such a mastermind they can see things other teams don't, why aren't they doing it to other teams?

I don't buy it. It's fair to say Meyer has put together better teams and if you say he's a better coach on those terms, I wouldn't argue. But I also thinks he cuts corners and I don't think he's waaay better. The teams have been a bit better, there's been some luck/random chance in some cases, and then there's this most recent nightmare I can't explain.
