Meyer Retiring

I think you should also take the off the field stuff into consideration when you're making this kind of assessment. Before this last game, it was pretty clear that we were closing the gap in comparison to OSU. We weren't there, but you're talking about closing the gap at a time when OSU is frequently a playoff team. This is top tier stuff and we were getting there under Harbaugh. This last game is shocking and I don't know how to diagnose it. I don't think anyone else does either. If it was so obvious, other coaches, paid millions to be among the best in the nation, would have done the same thing. Alternately, if someone at OSU is such a mastermind they can see things other teams don't, why aren't they doing it to other teams?

I don't buy it. It's fair to say Meyer has put together better teams and if you say he's a better coach on those terms, I wouldn't argue. But I also thinks he cuts corners and I don't think he's waaay better. The teams have been a bit better, there's been some luck/random chance in some cases, and then there's this most recent nightmare I can't explain.

We were closing the gap when they had a QB, JT Barrett, who couldn't throw. Since Haskins entered the game in 2017, we've looked hopeless.

I also don't see much, if any, QB development from Harbaugh which is supposed to be his specialty. O'Korn was here for three years. How was he better when he left? He looked wildly unprepared in every game he started. Speight clearly regressed from 2016 to 2017 even before his injury. Harbaugh also had a full month to get Peters ready to start against South Carolina and how'd that go? Peters completed under 50% of his passes and threw 0 TDs, 2 INTs against mediocre competition. The kid had been in the program for 2 years at that point and Harbaugh still didn't have him ready.

I HATE Urban Meyer. He will do anything to win. He does not care what corners he cuts. That being said, I still think he's a better X's and O's coach than Harbaugh. His teams also don't consistently play like shit on the road.

Oh! That's right. He thinks Meyer is waaaay better anyway.

If he runs a clean program, make sure kids go to class and tries to get them to graduate while competing for division/conference titles, even those objective enough to see that he's a douche should still like him on balance. OSU is a better team, Meyer has out-recruited Harbaugh by miles and the rest of the B1G by continents but I still believe that result was an outlier - if that game gets played 20 times, that happens once. myopic uofm fans coming down so hard on him are evaluating him based on 1 week rather than the last 4 years.

I love this thread. And for one of those rare times, Vic, I agree with you. There is no one else for Michigan. Harbaugh is a favorite son and a Michigan man through and through. M needs to ride with him. He will serve you fans and the University well. I truly believe that.

But you may need to temper your expectations. Because as someone else put it, it's not unreasonable to think that Ryan Day is in line to be the next great college football coach. It's probably going to happen. You know it's true.

it's also not unreasonable to think he'll underperform considerably. OSU probably needs an already great football coach to attract elite talent, particularly from outside Ohio at the same level as Meyer. Fickell was probably about the same as Day in terms of recognition. He was also Columbus royalty, favorite son, all-American alumn from elite Buckeye teams and recruiting dropped off a cliff (relatively speaking). There was more turmoil then and Fickell had the "interim" tag but it's clear, OSU doesn't always just reload.

Im hesistant to think we've closed the gap. Recruiting hasnt been as consistent so when you lose a Bush, Winovich, Gary on defense...what does that defense look like next year? Uche was a bright spot...slightly undersized so he might only be worth using on passing downs. He was also invisible vs good teams...along with everyone else he was invisible especially vs OSU.

I also thought the offense would be further along at this point...especially with Black comming back i thought we would have a dynamic offense with Black, DPJ and Collins...but that never came to be. We looked awful on offense if/when we couldnt run the ball down teams throats. When Higdon is gone were in deep trouble at RB....i know Tru is a fan favorite....but if hes your starting RB youre in big trouble.

5*Jordan Anthony or 5* Cam McGrone(Bush), high 4* Hutchinson(Winovich), 3* Uche(Gary). We have exceptional replacements for these guys. We all know Uche doesnt play like a 3*. He was a monster this year against good teams. Sacks as follows (2) NW, (1)Wis, (2)PSU, and (2)MSU. Here's what is bugging me........I checked his stat line and he did not play against Indiana or OSU. Why was he not on the fucking field when there was no pass rush against Ohio State and Indiana? If we can find a DT to step up, our Defense will be fine.

Based on prior posts, I worry you may be reprimanded for taking the thread off topic by making it about Dantonio. But you are right about that, MD has has definitely lost patience with the media at times.

The HFC of a rival is always, by default, a douche.

The HC of the team one is a fan of is just chippy, and a chap ass, who doesn?t suffer fool lightly.

Fair comments for sure.

news dropped last night. The Powell Police Department has released thousands of documents concerning the Zach Smith saga.

Now that leaves the question: Did they release this stuff, because Urban Meyer announced his retirement last week OR did he announce his retirement, because he knew this was coming?

Why isn't there more coverage of this?

No body wants to read that many documents to find out what a travesty the whole investigation and punishment was. Everyone already knows it.
