Next GM and Head Coach

Looks like Campbell coming in for a face interview this week. Formality most likely.

Anyone else nervous about having a first time GM and a first time Head Coach that hasn't even been a coordinator?

Not at all. How much did it help when we did have coordinators as HC. Maybe be an assistant to Payton is the key. Most GM's are first time GM's. Other options are former GM's who were fired, or current GM's, and you can't do lateral moves.

Dunno if id call it nervous. Id call it par for the course. Its similar to what we got with Quin/Patricia. Only this time they placed an importance on character and leadership.

This process we interviewed several experienced GMs. Pioli, Dmitroff etc etc etc....we CHOSE to give the job to someone thats never done it lmao. Never managed a cap. All hes done is scout college players.

HC has never called a play on O or D.

we're going to suck. We were going to suck for a couple years anyways simply due to our situation....even with an experienced GM and HC.

The hope is they both do well learning on the job and we can start to turn the corner in year 3.

PS...if Stafford was smart he'd realize this as well and ask for a trade.

Do I have to say it again about all the OC & DC we've hired before that turned out as terrible HC. And Holmes has to be better than Quinn almost by default. I think if he drafts two decent players in 5 years he's already passed Quinn.

Quin drafted poorly yes. But he actually managed the cap # fairly well....his strategy was poor ie WR. That will be new to Holmes and it will be something he needs to learn.

Im not 100% certain Schwartz or Caldwell were terrible coaches....they were paired with terrible GMs so there was always a glaring gap in talent in some facet of the game. How in the world do yo have the #2 defense in the NFL and trot out the likes of Kris Durham at WR? lol

Patricia was terrible at almost everything. Cant argue there...it was a bad hire and Quin took the fall for it.

Holmes and Campbell were both brought in to change the culture. Same reason Patricia was brought in. It was thought the lions were too soft and needed a culture shock to be turned into Perenial winners. Insert Patricia and no one bought in. Wood and Spielman obviously placed an importance on resetting that team culture again. This time in the form of a coach and GM thats "for the players." Its hard to bring a team together when the talent is not up to par...Campbell did that in Miami.

Regardless OC and DC haven't worked for us. Thought outside of the one that went to the Jets, Saleh - who else was out there that might be someone you'd be okay with? Maybe we need a guy that can be a head coach.

No idea if Campbell will be worth a shit but it can't hurt any worse than than what we've had. Quinn "He managed the cap fairly well." Ouch, lol. We need more than that.

I was hoping the GM would have more GM experience...again they focused on culture change and Holmes is a players first kind of guy. Hes likable.

HC i did want to put a focus on players and culture change. I was hoping for Matt Campbell from Iowa State. I was actually surprised to hear the lions were interested in one point as well....he was part of the Stafford story that certian coaches could have been turned off either because of the front office interest in keeping stafford or potentially moving on from him (no one seems to know what that story was about lol). But Matt Campbell has been very successful at getting the most out of his guys similar to Dan Campbell....but Matt actually has HC experience.

Outside of Matt Campbell i honestly just wanted a reason to watch the Lions....not the same ol crap. So if there was interest in moving on from Stafford i wanted it to be like:
trade him for picks
draft trey Lance
Hire Greg Roman as HC
and atleast the games would be fun to watch while we suck the next 2 years.

Instead it looks like we get to argue with LKP about how shitty Stafford is for the next 2 years.

I get you on Stafford. Plus Roman going from Jackson to Stafford. I think it matters more who the GM is and honestly don't see a GM that will just makes us better from what was out there.

"..which means Holmes won’t have to worry about managing areas like travel, nutrition, training and equipment."

I'd worry about the training since we can't train anyone property.

I?m still thinking Matt Campbell is just Rod Marinelli. ?He?s tough, he can rally the men.? I really don?t know about this hire. So little is out there and when I watch his interviews he just seems like a hillbilly meathead. I think we have Spielman to thank for this one. The biggest thing for Dan is whether he recognizes talent in both players and his staff. We?ll see soon I guess.

Most likely we'll be back in 2 years wanting a new coaching staff and GM. But you gotta try.

Jesus Christ they?re talking about Gregg Williams as DC because he?s friends with Campbell. He?s the famous guy who got fired by the jets mid season, also was Saints bounty guy. Also used Jabrill Peppers as a single high safety in Cleveland. Please god no.
