Player Signings - 2014 Offseason

I worded it poorly. My point was that instead of bringing Hill back at a similar price tag, that money could go to Joique instead. They shouldn't need to spend 2.5mil+ on a backup QB.

Hill was a Linehan guy. Hill's two year deal he signed in 2012 had a 2.2 million and 3.2 million cap numbers. I'd expect a similar deal for Hill if the Lions decide they want him as their vet backup. I could see them starting over with a new backup just as easily though.

I just don't see the point. Stafford seems to have shaken off the injury-prone label and Hill didn't even throw a pass last season. Hill was #27 in 2013 as far as QB cap hits go.

Top 10 Cap Hits and their backups
1. E. Manning - 20.85MM, Painter - 630K
2. Stafford - 17.8MM, Hill - 3.25MM
3. P. Manning - 17.5MM, Osweiller - 800K
4. Brees - 17.4MM, L. McCown - 555K
5. Brady - 13.8MM, Mallett - 800K
6. Rivers - 13.7MM, Whitehurst - 1.8MM
7. Roethlisberger - 13.6MM, Gradkowski - 1.28MM
8. Sanchez - 12.85MM, Smith - 900K
9. Bradford - 12.6MM, Clemons - 585K
10. Vick - 12.2MM, Foles - 655K

One of these is not like the others. I just think the money is better off going towards a player or players who will see the field more and contribute. Get a young promising QB in the mid-rounds this draft if they feel it's important. If Stafford, goes down the Lions are fucked anyway.

I agree. The money can be better spent elsewhere. Plus, now that we have a new OC, let him take a QB that he likes in the later rounds and try to develop him.

Worth every penny. That's peanuts, especially with his value to the team. Reggie is a walking caution sign. Bell is too valuable to let go.

Then all of a sudden you're back on the Leshoure train? I thought you casted him into the dumpster? Leshoure, Reddick and probably a rookie or vet FA as our backup = disastrous.

not back on the leshoure train....ill always think it was a dumb pick cause we took yet another high rd pick with no rush oline. But the fact is hes on our roster and I don't see why he cant do everything Bell does if hes healthy. With a tight cap I don't see why you give a back up rb 2.1 mil.

LeShoure does a good job falling forward, but do you really think he can do everything that Bell does? I don't think LeShoure is as good of a pass-catcher and I think Bell has more elusiveness, while I think Bell is just as good of an in-between-the-tackles runner. And is Bell really a backup running back? I feel like he and Bush are like 1A and 1B. They're both very important, as was evident when Bush went down and Bell played very well replacing him.

Hope the Lions keep Joique, I liked his aggressiveness with the football, and I believe that he will become even better IF the Lions continue to provide him with a improving OL to block for him.

Make Leshoure a fullback so that he becomes a glutton for punishment from the opposing defense to help Bell break through between tackles...haha!!

All Mikel was doing was collecting splinters and dust on the bench, might as well get some bang for their buck in return from the costly pick that he was, not to mention his rookie season being lost to injury.

Bell's receiving and more explosivness than LeShoure is worth the extra million.

You can save 2 million by cutting Leroy Harris and the Lions cap won't be as tight as you think. Save 750 K by trading LeShoure keeping Bush, Bell, Owens and Riddick.

Bell was not only active but produced. You put your money in production

Bell breaks tackles, Leshoure trips himself up.

This is pretty much it..plus the pass catching that Bell does..

I like the idea of drafting a young QB in the middle rounds. But even with a new OC, I don't see Mayhew drafting one even if it's to appease his OC. Assuming the OC wants to draft one..imo, Mayhew isn't far from his master Milllen - in the fact he drafts who he wants regardless what the coaches might want.

Thad Lewis looked pretty good with the Bills. We let him go and kept Moore. Maybe Moore is good?

You never know. I don't see the reason to keep Hill any longer. He was a nice sign but not anymore they need to move a young guy that might have some potential to be the backup..

Soo theres 2 different types of thinking. 1 is ....I NEED Him on my team and I don't mind paying him 2.1 mil. Sounds like most of you are in this boat. The other is what I wouldn't mind getting for him if another team picks him up. Theres no way a team gives us a 2nd round pick for him....therefor you set him as a 2nd rd tender hes yours and there goes 2.1 mi. Id set him at rd 3. Pay him less or worse comes to worse im ok with getting a 3rd round pick. His value is too high to our team for a 4th or lower. But i wouldn't mind an extra 3rd for Joique with the RBs we already have in place on this team.

I'd take a 3 for Bell. I'm come to like what Bell does over the year but I think a 3 could help more though I'm not confident we can draft someone useful in the third round..

well that's the other part of it lol...if mayhew goes out and grabs another spievey in rd 3 then we just wasted Bells value. But i wont turn this into another mayhew sucks at drafting thread lol.

There is no round 3 tender dummy. Original round tender (undrafted), round 2 or round 1.

This makes sense. I really don't think any team would give up a 3rd for him. I think if you tender him with a 2nd you are over paying him.

There is no such thing as a 3rd round tender. It makes no sense. Hughes only can answer things in hindsight.

I didn't know that either. So basically, the Lions can offer him he 2nd round tender and are forced to pay him that regardless if any other team negotiates with him? If they don't offer him anything does he then become an unrestricted FA?

Yes if they offer nothing he would become unrestrictred. Tender means they can match any offer and get that tendr, if they don't match, they get a 2nd with a 2nd round tender. If he was was picked in the 3rd round you could give him an original round tender and get a 3rd but he was undrafted and not by the Lions. 2nd round tender he gets. That is probably the biggest slam dunk of offseason unless they acutally give him a longer term contract.
