Sanchez Since Aug 22 (Last 8 Starts)

OK, OK, I was wrong about Sanchez. He can pitch well against good teams. I wasn't alone before in my criticism, but it does seem that he has improved and finally gotten the hang of this American League pitching thing.

Thumb is starting soften on sanchez he said "for the right price" when I asked yesterday if people still didn't want sanchez back.

I think for a guy transitioning from the NL to AL he's doing quite well. I do agree on the price discussion but we're seeing these playoffs what a rotation with those four all clicking can do. Any semblance of consistent offense and...

I'm still a "for the right price" guy on Sanchez. Of course the way he has been pitching the "right price" is going up!

yea It's a catch 22. You love seeing him do this well but he is definitely driving up his price. Especially when a team like the Red Sox have 80 million to spend.

on Sanchez's changeup from yesterday

"They had five strikeouts on changeups, most in a game since May 2011. Eight total outs on that pitch, which Anibal Sanchez held back to use as an out pitch; of 37 total two-strike offerings, only seven were changeups, but six of those seven resulted in outs (and one missed the zone)."

having that kind of changeup is huge...just ask tim lincecum from 2010 versus Tim in 2012.

The way I see it, and I have no idea how much he will get, is it better or worse to get a better SP for 10-12 mill or a lesser SP for 5-6 mill? I know we say for the right price but I don't want a second Porcello on the team. If you're gonna add a guy, might as well be good.

Only other scenario which would be better is getting a SP with arb years left and who will be cheap, like another Fister. Not sure we can get lucky a 2nd time.

Sanchez has definitely upped his price tag that is for sure. I agree with Mitch if they are going to spend some loot on a pitcher they might as well go for a good one. I don't know if the rumors I have heard are true or not, but supposedly, Greinke has the Tigers on his list of teams he could sign with. I'd sign him in a heartbeat.

I'm not softening on anyone.

I always said Sanchez is going to cost more then he's worth/we need.

We have 3 solid guys for next year now, Sanchez would be great, but I think he's going to command between 11-14 million, and I feel that's too steep.

If we can get him for a more reasonable price I'm okay with it, so yeah....for the right price.

Someone is bound to argue that Ilitch does not mind spending money...but we still have to look towards JV and Miggys contracts coming up soon. Gotta keep the salary status quo somewhat, that's my opinion on it.

Greinke is going to get about $18-$20M a year.

I'd rather see them be salary heavy in the rotation and develop some of these "power arms" DD keeps on drafting rather than shelling out 9 million a year for a closer.

I agree they need to save some cash for JV and Miggy but it's not like they will likely make that much more per year...on the high end another 8 million per (4 mil each).....hopefully the timing of V Mart's contract ending and Nick C developing can save some cash on the middle of the lineup.

18-20. Yeah I was figuring it would be around that. Oh well, maybe he would take less. Stranger things have happened.

I'll spend 11 if he's good. IMO, no point in signing a 3rd tier starter at 5-6 mill that puts up a 4.5 and is inconsistent as hell. I'm sure they don't want to keep on spending but JV is the only pitcher, once Valcrapo is done, that's making a decent hefty price tag.

As good as Sanchez has been lately, I agree they have to temper expectations and not overpay.

For reasons against overpaying a third starter, see Nate Robertson.

Except I think he'd be 4th. behind Scherzer.

but not to mention all the issues we have, can't go bust the whole kitty on a starting pitcher, what honestly was not our weakness in 2011, it would be another case of us spending a large sum of money to fix an area low on the priority list.

We need at least 1 corner OF, and probably two. and we need a middle IF backup to replace Ramon, who can actually contribute when Peralta gets rested every 4 starts.

We have to resign Laird, or someone comparable if someone else tosses more dough at him.

We need to bolster the BP.

So yeah, if Sanchez wants to hang around in 2013 for another WS shot, it;s going to have to be cheap IMO, or pass on him.

Whether he's 3rd 4th or 5th in the rotation, he's a 3 at worse. Then we trade Porcello for COF or MIF. I'll sign him if its fair, not necessarily cheap. But just because you have a bad signing, Nate Robertson, you shouldn't compare everything with that.

And the whole kitty, there is much more money on offense right now - pitching wins.

IF replacement to replace Ramon and back up Johnny - if they keep him you know they'll just stick with Worth.

I just don't think I can stomach Porcello for another year.

And to be honest, if Sanchez leaves I feel like we lose that trade big time (unless we win the world series of course ;)).

Nate Robertson didn't have half the track record Sanchez does.

Robertson sucked.

That was obvious before they paid him.

I agree "if the price is right" but that goes for almost anyone on the market who could contribute. This would be one hell of a starting rotation if all 5 guys can actually pitch. We do no need a corner outfielder and a middle infielder as well as bullpen help. This BP scared the hell out of me even before Valverde's recent implosion. Hopefully VMart will come back and give us some consistant help in the DH positioin. That will make this lineup much deeper which would help. Maybe we can get solid defensive help at COF and MIF for a lesser price.

depending on what Illitch is willing to spend this team is not likely to add a top flight FA corner OF and a Sanchezesque SP. Fortunately for Detroit the SP FA market is pretty good. The OF market is so so it's a little harder to determine what guys like Pagan or Victorino will go for.

There really are only two paths here imo....they trade porcello and some prospects for a corner OF and sign sanchez or someone similar.

or they keep porcello and throw the money at a guy like Pagan.

I'd bet good money the tigers bring back peralta but Dotel is a question mark. I think the tigers will keep Dotel and look to Al Al to close. Not enough $$ for a FA closer too.

Personally I'm a fan of the resign Sanchez and trade Porcello idea but I'm not saying it's right or wrong just my opinion.

oh..and in all these scenario's smyly is the fifth starter. I think it's his to lose.

All I know is I thought Illitch had a limit and it was quite a bit of dollars a go and then he starts to spend spend and spend. I have no idea what he might do. He might just go get that SP, maybe Sanchez, or top OF.

WS win might or might not change that.
