Sanchez Since Aug 22 (Last 8 Starts)

depending on what Illitch is willing to spend this team is not likely to add a top flight FA corner OF and a Sanchezesque SP. Fortunately for Detroit the SP FA market is pretty good. The OF market is so so it's a little harder to determine what guys like Pagan or Victorino will go for.

There really are only two paths here imo....they trade porcello and some prospects for a corner OF and sign sanchez or someone similar.

or they keep porcello and throw the money at a guy like Pagan.

I'd bet good money the tigers bring back peralta but Dotel is a question mark. I think the tigers will keep Dotel and look to Al Al to close. Not enough $$ for a FA closer too.

Personally I'm a fan of the resign Sanchez and trade Porcello idea but I'm not saying it's right or wrong just my opinion.

oh..and in all these scenario's smyly is the fifth starter. I think it's his to lose.

Another thing to consider is the long term rotation. Scherzer and Fister are both going to demand some big money in the next few years. Will signing Sanchez decrease the chances of keeping the other two? I've been on the trade Porcello bandwagon for a while. He needs to pitch in the NL IMO

Scherzer is club controlled through 2015 and Fister through 2016. Losing V Mart's contract after 2014 gives the team enough rope to resign scherzer without increasing payroll but once 2016 rolls around with fister, jackson, and avila all up for FA I'm sure the Tigers will have to make some tough choices. All depends on their production however.

Yeah, Fister and Max if they continue to be good, won't be making the big bucks for a few more years.

I look at it this way, the Tigers have more money tied into their offensive stars but we're 1 game from a world series trip because of the pitching.

That depends.

5 of the top 10 paid are position players [Fielder, Cabrera, Young, Peralta, Infante] and 5 of the top 10 are pitchers [Verlander, Valverde, Sanchez, Benoit, Scherzer].

Numbers 11 and 12 are pitchers. [Porcello, Dotel]

Everyone else makes less then 3 million, which is peanuts.

Collectively position players earn $66,202,000
Collectively pitchers earn $46,547,500

The majority of our offensive salary is 2 players $44,000,000 from Fielder and Cabrera alone.

You can look at it like the offense makes more, but to say we need to spend more on pitching is absurd.

Scherzer is a FA in 2015, Fister in 2016. Both will get significant increases during arbitration this off season. If they pitch well again in 2013, again they will get significant raises if they go to arbitration.

DD has a history of signing extensions to players to buy out their last year or two of arbitrations.

Sanchez was making $3.7 MIL in 2011 and won arbitration against the Marlins (offered $6.9 Mil) for $8 Mil in 2012. Scherzer was playing for $3.75 Mil in 2012 and certainly had a better overall year than Sanchez' 2011. I don't see Fister making anything less than what Max made 2012 ($3.75 Mil) for 2013, maybe even more if it goes to arbitration. Between the two, they are at least $8-10 Mil in salary increase for 2013.

Being under team control is a misnomer. They still get 3 years of arbitration, and if said player performs well, they are almost guaranteed to get significant increases in pay. If they perform poorly, then you can just not offer them arbitration and let the walk as free agents.

Like I said.

And its not absurd. Lets have a good rotation 1-5 rather than 1-3 and maybe 4-5 are okay.

what I was saying (and you can see me reference to Fister's FA date in my post) was that scherzer is due FA in 2015.

I'm well aware the way arbitration works in fact I reference Jackson, Avila, Scherzer, and Fister's upcoming pay hikes for 2013 in this thread.

Which is why I've said more than twice in this thread the Tigers will have to choose signing either Sanchez (or a similar FA SP) or a corner OF. I opted that the Tigers resign Sanchez and trade Porcello for a corner OF...of course not sure why I'm repeating this again.

imo club control is not a misnomer...the Tigers are bound to an arbitrators decision but they have the control in determining whether or not they continue to play for the team. The player only speaks with his performance.
