Sanchez wants 6/$90MM

It is being said Anibal is giving the Tigers the chance to match the offer before a decision is made. Said to prefer to play in Detroit over Chicago obviously.

5 years @ $$75MM??

Cubs are fucking stupid, but hey, they have their newer GM in Theo, so I guess that he has to show Cubs fans that he is doing something to improve a ballclub that has finished 20, ('10) 30, ('11) and 40 ('12) games under 500 in consecutive seasons, ever since the last season ('09) that they finished a few games over .500. They still aren't anywhere near being in contention yet, even if they sign Sanchez. Will they possibly be dealing Garza as a result?

all conflicting reports depending on who is tweeting or reporting from the trading sites.
5:57pm: The Tigers are/were being given a "last chance" to match the Cubs' offer, reports Bob Nightengale. The Cubs thought they had a done deal with Sanchez.

question is, do we actually want to match that?

That is the dilemma to be honest. But the way the market seems to be now with the obvious extensions were likely to be faced with Scherzer, Fister and Verlander I don't know right now if it will be a good signing.

However I would much rather pay Sanchez and package Porcello out of Detroit then have to be relegated to having to resign Rick for probably an absurd contract offer he is likely to see if a few seasons given the way the market is.

Let's also not forget our closest major league ready pitcher was traded for Sanchez so unless we go into this season with a rotation of Verlander, Fister, Scherzer, Porcello and Smyly our options are really limited unless we deplete our already very thin minor league system at the deadline again.

Signing Sanchez for that amount of $$$ and years could definitely hamper signing Verlander, Scherzer and/or Fister when the Tigers try to extend them, and they may have to do so probably no later than ~1 1/2 years before they would otherwise become FAs.

I think the best move right now would be to match the offer to Sanchez and package Porcello in the best deal available since he really does have some good trade value at the moment and that could in itself strengthen our chances this season.

The Tigers, who offered Sanchez a 4 year deal, have last crack to top Cubs offer.
If they do, Sanchez goes to Tigers instead.

tick tock tick tock.

I honestly am terrified when I sat here and think what the contract for Verlander is going to look like in the next season or so. I believe were looking at the very least 180-200M after the contracts CC and Greinke have signed. Also rumored Kershaw is looking for a 175m+ extension with the Dodgers.

Shit..offer Annibal 3 years @ $48M with a player option for a 4th year.:hmm:
4 years @ $$64MM with a player option for 5?

Looks like Anibal's camp is willing to accept 5y/70m to stay with the Tigers. Not the greatest of discounts but none the less a small discount.

In that case Tigers have around 1/2 year to get it done with Verlander then! Scherzer time is in the same boat as 2013 will be his 6th MLB season. Better start to work on them in that case.

Tigers have officially upped their offer to 5 years although the money has not been released. Expect a decision within the next 10-15 minutes.

Since Verlander supposedly/allegedly has said in so many words that he doesn't necessarily expect/desire to be one of, if not the most highest-paid SPs in MLB, and maybe b/c it has been rumored or suggested that they would like to make him a "career" Tiger, perhaps the Tigers FO might have a little more leeway in beginning negotiations with Justin, possibly delaying it until next off-season. But how Verlander and the Tigers fare next season and in the potential postseason, may very well affect his extension positively or negatively, so JV may not want to wait that long..

Anibal Sanchez agent Gene Mato on picking Tigers or Cubs: "He has not decided. Negotiations are ongoing..'' So obviously, a late wrinkle

To pitch as perhaps a mid-rotation SP with a contract that pays Sanchez like a #1 for many teams, and what very well could become an eventual World Series contending team in a middle-market, or possibly become heavily scrutinized by the media in a large-market, as their highest-paid SP and probably as their new "Ace" of a ballclub that might be all but out of contention for even the 2nd WC slot by the ASB for all intents and purposes...decisions..decisions.
