Sanchez wants 6/$90MM

Sounds like Tigers and Anibal Sanchez might end up with a deal.
Cubs offer being countered by Detroit. My gut says he goes back 2 Motown.
dan plesac past 10 minutes.

Tigers potential competition for the World Series championship at this point in the off-season is 1) Giants, 2) Nats, 3) Dodgers, and maybe the Braves/Reds/Cards in no particular order. Their potential competition for the AL Pennant is 1) Angels, 2) Rays, 3) Rangers, and maybe the A's O's and Blue Jays also in no particular order. The Yankees have to make some more moves before I might consider them to be legit pennant contenders.

Do the Tigers now NEED Sanchez to help them make it back to where they left off so surprisingly last November? Has the Angels signing Hamilton and to a lesser degree, the Royals upgrading their SP recently have heated up their previously lukewarm desire to sign Annibal?

Verlander 17+ wins, Scherzer 15+ ,Fister 15+Porcello 10+ Bullpen 20+;=77+ to 80 wins 5th starter needs 10+ would get passed Chicago' 85.
So the real question is; is Sanchez worth that much for 10 to 12 more wins. Remenber he has a losing record right now. Better offense could make him a winner thoe.

Really Smyly could do the job at a better cost. And spend the money on a closer or better shortstop. picking up Sanchez and trding RP is not worth the money IMO. Unless a glove at SS and 2B could be had.

I almost want Sanchez so the trade looks a bit better. Giving up Turner and stuff for just a year of Infante doesn't make me happy.

might as well sign him to make the trade look better, then trade porcello for some help at SS or LF (with maybe some BP help thrown in too).

And he's not terrible and players get overpaid all the time and lastly, its not my money.

Sanchez story from fangraphs.

And Sanchez is underrated. Maybe that?s a meaningless word, because who?s doing the rating?, but he doesn?t seem to me to be 'that' far behind Zack Greinke. He?s presently just 28 years old, his injury history seems to be behind him, and there are indications that his command has been improving.
As pitchers go, Sanchez wouldn?t be a bad guy to build around, because he has a lot of talent and he doesn?t seem to be on the verge of a decline. As a matter of fact, Sanchez has a lot in common with another current member of the Cubs? rotation.
Here?s a table comparing Anibal Sanchez to Matt Garza, 2010-2012:

@ approximately 10:56 pm EST, it looks like Sanchez and his agent have decided to sleep on it, and may make "The Decision" sometime tomorrow.

Anyone know if DD offered the 5/70m? I assume if he did Sanchez would have accepted so my thought is he didn't (DD).

question is, do we actually want to match that?

Well a lot of people keep saying the "it's not my money, spend it" line.

But here's the wrinkle, what if we fail to make the post season? It could happen, ask the Red Sox or Angels.

So then what? At some point the salaries are going to exceed the profits, and that sometime will likely be when were trying to extend Verlander and Cabrera, so the question is this: do we want to risk possibly having to give up on those players later, to get Sanchez now?

Personally, I don't feel Sanchez is worth $15M a year. If I thought we could spend it with no negative repercussions in the near future, I'd say go for it, because he definitely makes us better, but I'm thinking about 2015, 2016, and 2017 and beyond.

I guess if Ilitch and DD want him that bad, we'll likely offer enough to land him.

I'd personally wish him luck with the Cubs.

Its a viable wrinkle. Players are always going to get cut, traded etc therefore there are always ways to stay in the red. That's my take.

Match it. Been an over paid offseason for everyone. I know it was for only 2 years but we gave Hunter too much. While we're at it flip Porcello to Pittsburgh for Hanrahan and sign that right handed left fielder to platoon with Dirks. Cody Ross sounds good

Here is the problem with your premise...you just want to get by CHW with 85 wins. What is wrong with 95-100 wins (or more)?

2010-2012 Team record when a pitcher starts:

Verlander .670
Fister .583
Scherzer .573
Porcello .562

Most GS a year last 3 years

Verlander 34 x .67 = 22.8 team wins
Scherzer 33 x .573 = 18.9 team wins
A. Sanchez 32 x ??? = ??????
Fister 31 x .583 = 18.1 team wins
Porcello 31 x .562 = 17.4 team wins

So, best guess, the starters (minus Sanchez) will equal 76 team wins. We still have 32 GS to go and probably a good 14-20 wins to get. "Slugs" has averaged 12 GS per year for DET and average 3 team wins out of those starts. That leaves 20 GS for Smyly (or whoever), and that mean they would have to get 11-17 wins in 20 GS. Not very likely for a 5th starter.

Next....what happens if Fister or Scherzer get hurt for any amount of time? Are you ready for more "Slugs"?

$15 Mil a year for a consistent, #2-3 Starter is not all bad.

My concern is the contract length (without option years).

8:46 am The cubs are out on anibal sanchez. looks like tigers won the bidding for him.

cubs increased their off to 77.5mm. Tigers reportedly offered 75 mm.

per mlbtraderumors.com

This rotation and team could be a whole lot better if we end up with Sanchez back long-term, and can trade away Porcello for some corner OF, pen, and/or SS help.

Very surprised the Tigers had to go up to 80m after offering 5/75m. Even with the Cubs upping their offer to 5/77.5m. But either way it's not a bad signing and will allow us to make another move or two to better our club.
