Sick of all of this - A Rant

Ignorance really, they are also the least educated states. they buy into the religious nonsense and that clouds their views on everything else. they vote for candidates that look out for the wealthy because they want to make sure some 16 year old girl is forced to have an unwanted child.

Careful with that line of thinking. Humans are amazing. It is never enough to label a large population of people as ignorant. When it's true, there has to be some reason for it. Never let yourself think it has something to do with some flaw of 'those people'.

Unless 'those people' are buckeyes. Buckeyes are actually lesser people.

Only because a large part of that were comprised of latinos. Not because of god based politics.

Catholics have voted with the majority every time for 40 years. We're also not the Bible thumpers anyone is talking about. We buy into evolution and climate change. (Well, not all of us of course.)

This very basic statement is probably the primary reason I don't go to church anymore. Jesus would have loved a lot of things that the church crowd seems to hate.

What? You mean me paying $6,000 per year for my family to go to the doctor a handful of times would be something jesus wouldn't love?

Church people seem to love that as much as republicans. Capitalism at it's finest.

it's a joke really. they use bible passages to justify their views on abortion, homesexuality, etc but the main component of Jesus's teaching was to help the poor.

I'm sure they all wish there was a bible passage saying "let the poor fend for themselves and too bad if you get sick without insurance"

catholics tend to take the opposite view of church leadership

If Jesus was around, you wouldn't need the doctor or the insurance.

If someone was sick, Jesus would just walk across the pond, touch that person and heal them.

Then he would give you a whole bunch of fish and bread and wine.

I was going to say the same thing about wolverines actually

I did say that those people are generally single issue voters. there is one thing that makes them ignore everything else. usually making sure some young girl can't get an abortion or making sure they can be armed to the teeth

61% of Republicans and 48% of Democrats go to church fairly regularly. This isn't the church/no church split you're trying to paint it as.

I think we'd have to regulate and tax any of that kind of behavior.

Well, there was a time when slavery was justified by what the bible says. Of course, dems were the republicans of that day, though.

I will say re:welfare, just as an example...

There was a guy who I ran into the other day, ranting to some kid about all kinds of extremely right wing stuff. At the end the kid, who was in the military btw, asked what he did. The guy answered he did nothing, that he was on disability and made 5K a month. He was so proud.

Similarly I have a relative who is also just about the most vocal right winger there is, even railing against "hand outs" all the time. He is also on disability making decent money for doing nothing.

Frankly, I think this is a huge area of waste. Not because it isn't needed but because it is improperly administered. Dems could probably join with republicans on this in at least cutting it down so guy number 1 isn't making more money than humps busting their butts on minimum wage all day.

It also just shows an example of "voting against interests" and one that I think comes up a lot. It was also odd to me to see both of them so vocal about their positions and in particular, my relative who doesn't seem to realize that these "hand outs" he has problems with include himself as a beneficiary.

I will say I've probably grown harder in this area recently and wish it would be at least cut back to prevent abuses.

Socialist!

Ugh, i hate when people start about taxes. Taxes provide us with many things that we use each day. It's a necessary evil.

everyone wants a hand out, defense contractors, farmers, the energy industry, the poor, financial services firms, etc. it just happens that the poor can't afford lobbyists.

funny that some americans are so angry about anyone getting something for free. they see people in their community that they consider to be "takers" and that drives them nuts. Never mind that we keep producing the M1 Abrams tank each year even though we have hundreds that we've never used. we have a 600b defense budget that is geared to fight the wars of 50 years ago.

Oversimplification. If someone is denying that they're a necessary evil there isn't even an argument. That guy is wrong.

yes but you can't just be blind about it. we hand out a ton of money to corporations that we shouldn't. lobbyist keep our elected representatives in office and then sway our tax dollars to promote their interest.

I will rant about taxes to the extent it is far and away unnecessarily complicated. How much money would it save to just make it far more simplified? I will rant against them to the extent that corporations like GE make billions in net profits and pay 0 taxes. There is a ton wrong with the tax system that could probably save every working guy/gal some money if corrected.
