Get StartedIt's 8 million to pick up his option. Just sign him to a long term deal for a lower cap number.
Fairley they wanted to motivate and they realized they can live without him.
They downgraded at both DT positions. They downgraded at back up DT position. Theres no way to argue against it. That said...the rest of the team needs to be good enough to overcome those losses. Ansah needs to be better. Levy cant regress now that he wont be clean all game. Secondary might be asked to cover longer. Whos going to get to the qb? King of hurries Ansah is the only threat in our front 7 to get to the qb. Defenses like that are usually pretty easy to plan for.
Ngata is very good and will take the doubles. Walker has potential. We still have a draft. And our back 7 and DC is very good. This is a slam dunk top 5 defense AGAIN. I said it last year, was correct and will be correct this year.
Ansah was a beast, Jones solid, talented backup DEs, Levy beast, Tulloch, good, Whitehead solid, Van Noy potential, Slay very good, Mathis good, Quin beast and Dig solid. It's a top 5 defense. They'll add DT, CB depth.
Ngata is good at stopping the run and being fat. Both are valuable in the NFL DT position. However he isn't near the force against the passing game the Suh was/is. I mean suh has 10 more sacks than Ngata in their career. One is in the middle of his prime, one has exited it.
Walker..potential...sweet.
DT is worse in 2015 than 2014.
Is that an actual top 5 in 2015 or a "True" top 5?
When you lose one of the best defensive players in the game, your defense got worse. Give it up.
The defensive turn around was Austin, our back 7 and DE play in 2014. That is the real reason. Plus finally our top 3 secondary players stayed healthy. Suh was good in 2011-2013 but the defense was not (other than first 10 games of 2011).
If the Lions would have lost key players in the secondary you would have said the reason for the good defense was because of the front 7.
Bottom line is the defense was good because of the front 4. They stopped the run which made passing downs longer and more difficult. The Lions lost the best player on the team and their 3 best DTs. If you think those losses are insignificant you are an idiot.
Truly the lions only downgraded at suh. Fairley barely played and I believe it looks like he has registered more games than he actually has by playing limited roles in games while injured. Yes truly he is more talented than what we have now. But he didn't stay healthy enough to really matter anyways.
Downgrading your best piece of your defense and a top two defender in the league is a big hit.
Everyone on defense seemed to have their best year. Now yes this could be the new normal, but would anyone be overly shocked if this team feel back to the middle of the pack on defense?
While yes it is year two of the defense, there is also a full year of the defense on film for others to study. If we stay healthy can we be top 5 again...yea probably. Could we also be around #15...yea probably.
We didn't downgrade overall on defense. It's just different DTs. Ngata is a stud. This is a slam dunk top 5 defense barring major injuries.
I know I know..all the lions will progress, newcomers will have career years under Austin, Offense will take a huge leap in year two. Every other team in the league will see a decline. As long as we don't have a single injury on the team we will easily be top 5. However if any single starter misses more than 2 games, all bets are off and we can use it as an excuse.
We get it.
