Softball Update

Blanco was blasted today 10-1 in five innings.
Big ten tourney up next.
43-10 and 18-3 regular season finish.

Besides the hitting, my other concern with this year's team is the lack of depth at pitching. Hope this was just a let down after taking the regular season title. GO BLUE!

I think it is more than just the base running. The in game decision making is suspect, the players don't seem prepared to make good decisions on the bases or in fielding.

Exactly.

The preparation.

I've told this story before; I went to see the girls in Fullerton one year; they were playing Notre Dame in a tournament.

The girls were in the field and a Notre Dame runner was on second base. There was an infield ground out and suddenly, the Notre Dame runner on second base found herself having moved too far off the bag, and was hung up.

The great power hitter Dorian Shaw was the first base (person?) seemed to have no idea what to do. I stood up and screamed - people riding the Matterhorn at nearby Disneyland probably heard me - 'RUN HER DOWN!!!!!"

I guess this registered; Dorian ran at the runner, who broke toward a base, and Dorian made the throw and the put out was made.

Yes - the players need to be taught the fundamentals of what to do on the bases and in the field.

I think I remember you telling this story. I see the pattern of bad decision making you have talked about. I wonder why Hutch hasn't tried to bring in coaches to correct these things? They seem pretty clear. With the program winning so much, I can't see that the funds are not there. Maybe the winning is the reason! If they are winning, then does it need to be fixed? I think so, there were several questionable plays in the finals vs OK that came down to bad decision making and I think cost them the NCAA championship.

Over the years for fielding and baserunning choices have a cost our young ladies dearly in the postseason when the competition steps up.

One of the announcers said Saturday that Hutchins I had turned over the fielding coaching to an assistant, I forgot the assistance name. That's a positive sign and the fielding choices I have seen in the games I've seen this year seem better.

She now needs to bring in somebody who really understands Baserunning and is able to teach it. Years ago on this board I made a joke that Hutchins needed to replace her third base coach and people thought I didn't know that Hutchins is the third base coach. That still my opinion.

Hutchins is great at coaching pitching and hitting and she is a great motivator and she is a great recruiter. Our ladies just need better coaching at those two deficiencies.

She turned the fielding over and low and behold Michigan is one of the best fielding teams in the big ten and the nation lol. She needs a base running coach for sure.
All I taught when my daughter was in her 6th, 7th and 8th grade was defense ,defense , defense , and knowing what base to throw it to.. I told the kids everyone is going to get a chance to lead off (regular season) but they better learn defense. I hit more ground balls that my arm was falling off. I head them learn to hit from there parents and siblings . My girls sang and had fun. 3-8-1 regular season turned into to 4-0 in the playoffs and the title. Last three outs up 1 run was a force out at the plate, and a line out dp 1-3.. All three done by my pitcher . Amazing and lucky win.but hey we practice those plays!!!!!

Maybe she will see the improvement in the field and make the next move and bring in a baserunning coach. She has done more than her share of winning. She is universally recognized as a great coach, perhaps the GOAT. Hutch must be approaching retirement. Time to start training the next generation of coaches, and the next coach for Michigan. That is what it will take to reach the GOAT pinnacle.

I agree .. bad base running is a thing but it's not all on her sometimes girls make dumb decisions.

Yep, I remember a couple years ago when Michigan was playing OK in the WCWS championship. Sierra Romero was on 3rd with I think no outs and there was a hit to the shallow outfield and rather than running home Romero stayed on 3rd despite Hutch telling her to go. I remember after the play seeing Hutch on camera appearing to be telling Romero "you gotta go". Inning ended with Romero still on 3rd. As I recall Michigan lost that game by 1 run. So, it seems to be a discipline thing as much as bad decision making.

Beaubian was named All B10 first team and Freshman and pitcher of the year. She was also named 1 of the 10 finalists for the National player of the year award.

Tera Blanco First team all B10
Faith Canfield First team all B10
Katie Alexander 2nd team
Natalia Rodriguez all freshman team

Hutch is B10 coach of the year

After getting a first round bye, Michigan begins its B1G Tournament Championship quest in a quarterfinal match against MSU. Game is on the BTN at 5:30 EST.

Game didn’t start until 11:15 est. last quarterfinal game will be played first game Saturday. MSU has the only hits. Meghan is not as sharp as normal 2 hits and a hbp on a 1-2 count and walking a fucking .162 hitter.

This is exactly where coaching comes into to play. Where is the waste pitch on the 1-2 count. Losing 2-0 top of the second . Terrible pitching ,coaching and fielding . Just a terrible pitch sequence being called by our pitching coach ..especially not going after a .162 hitter .

Hitters looking awful as they can’t lay off the change as usual and so far it looks like Michigan’s btt wows will continue. MSU 2-0 top of third and we have no hits.

Sadly MSU is 4-3 in btt play verses Michigan soon to be 5-3 as we still have only 1 hit
MSU still up 2-0 top of the 4th.

Another dumb play by a Michigan coached player. Out of the box and ball hits her bat as runner is breaking for second.

I guess we just don’t waste a pitches on a 0-2 or 1-2 counts. I don’t really understand it.
MSU 2-0 bottom of the 4th.

Team just can’t get anything going on offense right now. Msu pitcher is shuting down the offense. MSU still up 2-0 top of the 5th and Michigan just has only 1 hit still. Hitting has been this teams issue all season, and sadly it comes up again in tournament play. MSU hitters have had a much better approach at the plate.

Yet again another 0-2 hbp on a inside pitch .
.. PLease learn to waste a pitch ...
Next batter hits it to shortstop and our 3rd basemen gets in shortstops way. Error.
2nd and 3rd no outs due to really poor execution pitching and fielding. Bases loaded after 0-2 count. No outs .

Wow that was a srtrike on 2-1.. It was right at her knees ump. Walk.3-0
Bases loaded no outs followed by a single 4-0..this game is over with Blanco coming in.
Western Michigan beat us 10-2 last week. This isn’t all that surprising with how poorly we play in btt.

I’m with tinsel now. This team is so poorly coached at times it’s not even funny. And I am talking about pitch selections with the counts 0-2 and 1-2 because those are coming from the dugout.

About to get run ruled in btt. So long any chance of hosting a regional in the ncaa with this embarrassing performance. Down 7-0 bottom of the 5th. Team needs a miracle. I guess Meghan is human after all. Still 7-0 top of the 6th. 2freaking hits .. same score bottom 6th. 7-0 Bolton 7th. Dominant perfermence by MSU pitcher sending Michigan packing again in the btt final 7-0. Only mustered 3 hits all game .

Semifinals will be
#2 Minnesota 37-15.
#3 Indiana 26-29.

# 8 Msu 26-25.
# 4 Northwestern 35-16.
Pretty sure Indiana, Iowa and Msu have to win btt to make ncaa field.
I think Northwestern 34-16 , Minnesota 37-15, Michigan 43-11, Ohio st 34-14 , and Illinois 37-18 have shots at making ncaa regionals. Maybe Nebraska 31-23, and Wisconsin at 28-21 but big ten has such low rpi I am unsure on any bid.
