Stafford gone to rams

Its not just about that. Its about more rebuild time. As usual. More added years where the only mandate is "to compete." As far as Goff playing well, I hope so .. but we all know there is more to it than that. The defense is terrible. That's not an easy fix. As i get older and older.

It's the NFL.....the rebuild time frame is 1-3 years. Look at Miami....they go 10-6 in '16.....fell on their face in '17, tried a quick build in '18 with little results......said fuck it and sold the farm in '19.......and are already competing in 2020.

This doesn't have to be a 3-5 year deal.....its 1-2 years......one down year if Goff plays really well.....2 down years if we have to draft someone for 2022.....but we'll still have 5 1st round picks on rookie deals with Stafford, Flowers and likely Goff off the books. We'll have a shit ton of cash to spend, a rising salary cap again and HOPEFULLY a good, young, cheap core of talent to work with.

THAT is doing it right.

True.

But even if we got the #8 this year, we still need to rebuild. Why not try out the young former all pro while we draft and sign guys for him (or his eventual replacement)?

This argument is simple in my opinion. Is our team better AT ALL prior to the trade?

Qb worse
Cap situation same
Draft stock slightly improved with 3rd rd pick.

The bottom line is this team is worse than it was a year ago.

Does it make the team better in the future? No idea... we have to wait 2 fucking years to figure that out. It will depend on several things... does goff suck. Do our future #1s amount to anything? Do we have to use a #1 on a qb the next couple years? Aka..no idea.

There is still fa and draft to make it better
Also coaching could be much improved
And goff could do good things

Hughes...what did you know before the trade that made you think they were going to need 1 year instead of 2???

Don?t know who you?re talking to.

It was directed at Hughes, sorry. Fixed it.

Fully agree with your point in today's NFL a team can potentially have a complete change in 1-3 years and expect the Lions to be better next year than last.

Especially with the cap flexibility they will have after 2021. Yes, Goff is $25M guaranteed this year, but he can be cut before 2022 and they will have $15M in dead money for one year. Trey Flowers is here for 2021 and can be an $11M in savings if cut before 2022 ($12M dead cap).
Coleman can be cut this year for $5M in savings or next for $7M.

Point being, after '21 the cap situation can be greatly improved, especially if the cap goes up as anticipated. After 2022 (2023 draft and FA)....we would have little to no dead money, 8 first and 2nd round picks on rookie deals, and one or two big contracts (Decker & Ragnow).

This front office is positioning itself for a successful future in 2022 or 2023. It's a much better spot to be in than where we were 2 weeks ago.

The same thing i knew the last 5 years. When you need a rebuild it makes no sense to have an average at best vet qb on your team taking up $25 mil in cap space. You all said the same thing prior to the trade. You just magically forgot because it's goff now instead of stafford? Gm put us in the same exact position we were just in only worse.

Eventually you have to pay a qb

Wilson or Lance or fields are not winning us a super bowl in 4 years

Nope...but defense and running game can! And now we will have worse than the worst defense in the league and no support for Goff. Nice job Holmes!

Lions maximixed their draft picks for run game and defense. Building through draft long term

2023 watch out

If anything I'm just wanting to enjoy watching them. This past season not so much.
