Stafford in Focus

https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2014/07/01/qbs-in-focus-matthew-stafford/

Proof Stafford does more than checkdown to RBs and throw to Calvin. Hughes wrong as always.

Tendencies

? Fifth-highest percentage of drop-backs from the shotgun or pistol at 85.5%.
? Faced pressure on only 28.9% of drop-backs, fourth-lowest in the league.
? Blitzed only 25.1% of the time, fifth-lowest percentage in the league and faced third-down blitzes only 27.7% of the time, third-lowest in the league.
? Highest percentage of throws between the numbers at 61.7%.
? Above the league average with 30.1% of drop-backs ending in two seconds or less and third-highest percentage in the 2.1-to-2.5-second range at 31.6%. Only 9.3% of drop-backs lasted at least 3.6 seconds, fourth-lowest in the league.
? 23.7% of passes went to running backs, above the league average of 19.6%. 3.9% of passes went to running backs in the slot, third-highest percentage in the league.
? Threw, by far, the highest percentage of slants at 13.9%, fourth-highest percentage of post routes at 9.2%, and the fifth-highest percentage of in routes at 8.1%.
? Threw the second lowest percentage of out routes at 5.9% and the fifth-lowest percentage of hitches at 11.1%.

so...to sum it up. He is put in the shotgun more often which allows him to get the ball out quickly. Not blitzed a lot so he should have time to throw the ball. Low drop back time which means he is more often than not throwing it to his first read. Throws to his RBs more than most QBs. A ton of slants which are among the easiest throws to make. Among the lowest number of outs and hitches which are among the most difficult throws to make.

Ins and slants and posts are the toughest.

Many of the RBs were as slot WRs. So he was average to RBs short.

Quick decision is a good thing. Calvin gets open quickly too.

Stafford was great when protected. See the positives.

I was right.

So he struggles with passes down the field, protected by an elite Oline.

Wow, it's like they see what I see.

Stafford was great 31-40 yards (see positives) and had a quick release. Great decision maker. The number of deep attempts are low for alot of QBs. Stafford's deep ball is just fine.

Right but he is below average on 20+, 21-30, 30+, 40+.
Struggles with out routes.

This just backs up what we knew about Stafford, he has difficulty with the tougher throws.

With no weapons to get separation and Calvin doubled. The opponents play two deep safety against us for a reason. They are scared of getting burnt.

If they are playing 2 deep safeties, the Lions have a great O line and 2 really good RBs why were they 22nd in the league in yards per rush?

Bush had 4.5 YPC. Ask Bell and short yardage situations. There were 6 bad rushing games, 2 without Calvin so that changes everything, all 6 without Waddle. Jason Fox and Hilliard can't run block is my answer.

Also Stafford can't run. Mobile QB teams usually have better YPC.

The 2.5 games without Bush were 3 of the 6 bad run games.

oh yes....another reason Wilson is more valuable!

That is the only thing Wilson has over Stafford. Running ability. Stafford whips him as a passer.

Wilson is much more efficient. He averages more yards per attempt, throws fewer INTs per attempt and completes a higher percentage of his passes. Stafford is a "gunslinger" and Wilson is a smart QB.

These "stats" are Based solely on the QB performance. It takes out the variables and suppose to look as a level playing field. Therefore separation and defense has nothing to do with this.

But in another thread, you just said they have a ton of weapons. I'm confused now... Which is it?

2013 they didn't due to injuries at WR 2/3. Now they do with Ebron and Tate.

And no separation makes it harder for a QB to make a throw. When people are more open, life is easy and the QB looks better.

Wilson is not efficient. He lives off the turnover. It's easier for that YPA and int per attempt with lower attempts. The more you attempt the harder it gets. Long drives are tough to do but Stafford is a master. Wilson is a turnover coattail rider.

how do you figure it gets harder? The int ratios and YPA are over the course of a full season...or over the course of a career. If anything with YPA and INT ratios on a long field should be higher vs. a short field where the defense has less area to cover. Your logic is flawed as usual.

More attempts make it harder to keep the ints low (more pick opportunities) and ypa up. Plus style of offense has a lot to do with YPA. Some teams slowly kill you with first downs. That's more impressive. That is the Lions.

Couple things. Hilliard is the starter over Waddle right now in OTAs so I hope he can run block.

Also this bull crap about no separation is a real stretch. A lot of teams have one big name receiver and nothing else. Seattle was one of them and he's only good enough to be our no. 2.

Waddle is winning the job right now from everything I read. Hilliard won't win it.

Wilson had the turnovers to carry him. If he had to give long drives like Stafford, Wilson wouldn't have been successful last year especially with just Baldwin and Tate. Wilson is the most overrated QB in the league. Wilson had a more consisten run game too. Tate did well for him and has very good hands. 900 yards was enough and all they needed. Wilson deserves very little praise for 2013.
