Stafford Tops Sporting News' Overrated QB List

Stafford is severly underrated. He makes play after play without a run game or protection.

11-5 season.

Overrated when he was ranked 22nd. Ouch. So what does that make him. ...like 27th best qb?

It makes sporting news and anyone who agrees with them idiots.

Stafford is severely underrated.

9th in yards, 14th in TDs and 13th in first downs thrown. And 11 wins.

Many of the 12 ints not his fault. Those ints not his fault plus the drops and protection issues and run game issues (long down and distance) skew his completion % and his QB rating.

Stafford is a top 5 QB given the run issues (fixed now, some was Oline and Bush injury), protection issues (mainly due to injuries and some Sims/Raiola regression) and drop issues.

see...you are one who severely over rates Stafford. Stafford has been in the league for 6 years and is a middle of the pack QB. The numbers don't lie.

The numbers do lie. The numbers extremely lie. The game tape doesn't lie.

ints not his fault, drops and protection, skew his numbers.

Trent Dilfer's 2000 Ravens had a great record and won the super bowl, therefore he is a great QB. This is the logic we are using, right?

No. Our defense carried us last year and it was on Stafford to not screw it up. The last 4 games of the year, 20 points was our highest total. That was basically our season. Some games we were lucky to score over 20. Others we played inept defenses that allowed us to pad the stats. Call it a product of the new system and the guys getting used to it if you want, but Stafford was basically Trent Dilfer last year. You don't get paid that much to be Dilfer.

This year he has to show that he can combine high touchdown numbers with low interceptions or he'll probably be on the overrated list again next year.

Stafford

83.6 career QB rating ranks 17th among active players.

Brees, Brady, Peyton, Rodgers, Luck

No way Stafford is even close to top 5

Even the 5 I listed could be debated since there are other guys like Romo, Rivers, Roethlisberger, Ryan, Wilson. I probably even forgot a couple.

I was excited when Stafford was drafted, I still homerishly hold out hope that he can crack the elite conversation with that arm. I still give him the benefit of the doubt as a fringe top 10 QB, but top 5 is insanity.

You are not listening. Int nots his fault, protection issues and drops skew the QB ratings.

breaking news...Stafford is the only QB in the NFL with protection issues and drops! Those other 16 QBs that are ranked ahead of him have perfect protection and HOF WRs that never drop the ball!

He has more issues to deal with than most other QBs. Some QBs get protected well and have WRs that don't drop the ball. See various sacks, hits, hurries and drop rates across the league. Some QBs have a run game support and only have to throw 450 times instead of 600 which is easier to get a higher comp % just throwing less and avoid ints throwing less. Some QBs don't have as many ints that it is the weapons fault. Some QBs have a very healthy set of weapons, Oline and RBs (see Rodgers in 2014). Some QBs get more defensive TDs than 2 and more turnover support than 27 (even less in 2012/2013). Some QBs don't have kickers miss 13 FGs therefore adding more points to the PPG.

Stafford on tape is top 5. He's just as good as Brees or Luck or Wilson or Big Ben. Rodgers, Brady and Manning (healthy) are the only QBs better.

Stafford was good in 2013, elite in 2011 and outstanding in 2014 (Mayhew's words, expert).

Does anyone even rate Stafford high enough to qualify him for being over rated?

I think it's a combination of some Lions fans and people from around the NFL who don't particularly pay attention to the Lions but keep the good-great 2011 season fresh in their memory. Also passing yards tend to be a flashy stat (though often times a hollow stat, or at the very least requires context) and Stafford just happens to put up a lot of yards.

He puts up alot of yards because he moves the chains for us. First downs leads to more attempts. He has to pass alot because we lack a run game. We can rely on Stafford to pass 600+ times and have a good moving offense. Qbs that are lucky enough to have run game only have to pass 450-550 times.

Yards=moving the chains. Would be more points if not for 13 missed FGs and some weapon caused turnovers in opponent territory. Though at Bears game he made two bad ints.

TDs he was 6th in 2013 and 14th last year. Alot depends on the situation (sometimes we run the ball for a TD on a drive led by Stafford) and his weapons in the redzone (3 dropped Tds against Pats for instance, Lucas blowing block against Peppers in redzone Week 3, plus Neal sack in redzone). Less Fauria was 6 less TDs. Stafford TDs dropped by 7.
