Stafford's next!!!

There's still a 'substantial gap' in Matthew Stafford contract negotiations.
Mlive

Not all that surprised. His agent is probably saying you paid him 20+ a year to be a statistically below average QB for 8 years. Now he is a fringe top 10 you better pay 30 million.

Lions are thinking I'm not sure Stafford will be better than Carr over the next 5 years so they don't want to beat his contract.

Unfortunately I'm not sure it really works that way. Seldom does the best player or better player get paid more. Just depends when your contract is due.

That seems to be a recent phenomenon in this rapid rising cap era. Hopefully the Lions front office is being smart and won't play that game. If it falls apart you franchise him at 26.4 million and work from there.

Piss off the 2nd best player in franchise history by making calvin pay back millions. Then follow it up with franchising your now best player on the team and your starting qb the following year. Ya, sounds like a lions thing to do lol.

Who cares..

It's a business. If he complains about 26 million to play for a year so be it.

When was the last time there wasn't a "significant divide" between the team and a franchise QB? Same thing was said about Carr about a month before his extension got signed. It was said about Luck. It was said about Flacco. It was said about Rodgers.

Hell, they even said it a few years ago about Brady, and he's always taking pay cuts.

I think it's a universal catch phrase when it comes to contract negotiations involving a QB. The player and the agent want to squeeze the most money they can.. that's business. The team wants to save all it can... that's business. The media needs something to report... that's business.

Fans get worried as hell, then scared, then relieved when the deal is signed and their guy is the hero for "taking less money", management is "smart for not paying full price" and the fans are excited... that's sports.

We don't know he won't go full price. End of the day you sign your QB. QB just don't leave for FA they all sign.. Quinn will cave. Thy all do. I'm not worried for that I'm actually worried that he does get paid too much.

Been a Stafford backer for several years. What's funny though is that the guys on the radio who are all about paying Stafford whatever it takes now were saying he was an average QB before last season.

He's always been a very good QB, if he has a top 10 line in front of him he will absolutely be close to Aaron Rodgers. I guess last season was a big season for him where he proved his mettle. A lot of people thought he's take a step back without Calvin and he took a huge leap forward.

Hes a good qb....or else we wouldnt be having this discussion of him being paid this much. His weapons still arent the best on the outside and the Decker injury means theres some questions along the oline going into the season. That will be a bulk of the excuses thisyear when he doesnt perform like a 26 mil a year player. Its also why hes just a good qb...and not a great qb.

We added some red zone threats, I think he'll have a much better year in this aspect. Downright frustrating in the rz last year

He's a great good QB that gets good QB stats. Pay him 26 per and win a Super Bowl. The 26 per is for a chance to win Super Bowls.

Lions had (mainly due to injuries) the worst run game and least short fields and most drops of ALL TEAMS in the last 6 seasons. Half the teams get 300 more rushing yards per year. It's insane. 95 short fields is awful for six seasons.

It has hurt Staffords stats even with him playing good to great most games. Big weapon problems in 2012 and 2013 seasons. Some Oline problems with Lombardi. And Stafford did improve with Caldwell/Cooter too.

You can play great and have mid 80s ratings because of team problems (Stafford is proof with game tape compared to stats). Stafford under Cooter has been high 90s into the 100s rating despite a four game injury out of the 24 games

The team has everything he needs this year. Run game with Abdullah and Riddick back, solid to good protection with improved deeper line, a healthy defense and ST that can provide short fields. We'll see if the team stays healthy enough to keep providing that. It should with better depth at tackle, RB, interior Oline and TE. WR 4 and 5 lack depth still

Give him 1,700 yards rushing (slightly below average), 18-24 short fields (average) and average drops with solid protection. He could win MVP and lead a SB run.

Be real, it works for him but he throws short passes where team is usually high on the YAC list.. And no way he's close to Rodgers .. ever. It's not like GB has had a stud team year after year. Their OL has stunk for many of his year and the defense is suspect.

"When he doesn't perform like a 26 mil a year player"

So, you have written him off already? Lol. Typical

Gb gives him good protection (better than det most years), 300 more yards rushing every year and 44 more short fields. Plethora of weapons with less drops. The td difference is less than 44. Short fields alone explain the td difference the las t six years

Rodgers gets way way more support while the lions deal with weapon injuries, running back injuries, joe Lombardi protection schemes, Stafford injuries and defensive injuries hurting turnovers forced

Rodgers is good because he gets way more help. Same with Brady

To be fair there has never been a 26 million QB. So if you equate success with money value than Stafford would have to have the best season of all time to be worth it. I think it's a safe bet that won't happen.

I don't but your fucking boy sure does....

Stafford can win MVP and Lions can win Super Bowl. That is worth 26 million

But neither of those is remotely likely.

That having been said, I'm not going to hate a 26mm deal. You don't just go to Walmart and buy franchise QBs off the shelf.
