Suh contract

It wasn't a mess. The large amount was imposed by the old CBA. Two restructures were necessary and there is an option bonus as part of the 9.7 million. They waited for the cap to go up. It was smart and got us cap space in the past.

Lions are 20 million under next year by the way. This is without cutting Jones, Bush, Broyles etc. Maybe Tulloch.

Lions have room.

Having room and using 15+ million for a DT are different..

If you have room it doesn't matter.

And if you need to justifiy it Best defensive player on the team and one of the top defensive players in the league. Worth that much for sure.

He's not worth that much, no DT is.

What exactly did we accomplish in the prior years for all this restructuring? a 4-12 and a 7-9 season.

It was not worth it. We would have had a better team this year if we weren't handicapped by restructuring prior years

worth it just for Glover Quin and Levy re-sign. That is what it accomplished. Number 1 defense. Worth it.

Or you can look at it like this. We got Reggie Bush. You could of gotten those two without much or any at all change to Suh's contract.

Bush did well in 2013 and still helps us. Suh's restructures were worth it. We had too to get Quin, Levy, Bush. Some of that 9 million is option bonus which is something we had to do too way back in 2010 when we signed the contract. Option bonus due to the ridiculous size of the contract back in the old CBA.

We handled Suh correctly and we have room to re-sign him or carry his 9 million dead.

So Bush had one good year, helped us to 7 wins. That one year cost 6.5 Million against the cap if we cut him after this year.

What do you mean resign or carry his 9 million dead? It's not an either or. The choice is to carry his 9.7 million dead or Resign him AND carry his 9.7 Million dead.

Think the hope there is that you "re-sign" him, which is in essence an "extension" and you move some of that money hitting his voidable year into future years and spread it out.

That lowers the cap impact of year one, and makes subsequent years easy to handle as well.

I'm still against paying the man that much money. I say let him walk, eat your 9.5MM or whatever, and roll better in 2016.

The problem with that is they spread it too much that you can't franchise him..maybe gradually fill in the holes rather than doing so after 3 DT leave at once.

I think we would have to workout the re-sign/extension before the 5 day after the super bowl mark. Which I find highly unlikely, even if I thought he was going to stay here. He wants to be part of Free Agency.

I'm not sure on Option bonus, however I don't think you can restructure a restructure bonus. So for sure 6.3M will be taken next year no matter what. I think the same for the option bonus I believe, however not 100% sure on that one.

9.7 there no matter what. We have room to re-sign him though. His base salary year 1 will be low to make it happen. And he would get a big signing bonus, possibly an option bonus in year 2, or maybe a big roster bonus two of the years. Plenty of ways to fit him and get him paid.

That 9.7 is already in Suh's pocket. We don't have to match that in cash to him.

Yeah lets keep on pushing it forward. That always works out.

It works beautifully. You see the cap has been rising. We handled a 22 million cap number with ease. Lewand/Mayhew did a great job.

Suh has the Lions by the balls. Hard to say they did a great job when all of the negotiating leverage is with the player.

Had to restructure due to old CBA. Lions can make a fair offer. If Suh wants to be a dick after being paid 65 million on a rookie contract, that's his problem.

It's not his problem...it is his right. Why wouldn't he want to get as much as he can?

So LKP if another company came to you and told you that they would pay you 15% more than your are making now you would take it.

Most people would. He owes nothing to the franchise. They would cut him if he didnt work out or needed the cap space.

Depends on the company...and the guarantee. For NFL players, a whole to depends on the guaranteed bucks.
