The Ebron Pick

As you all know, I have a love hate relationship with the Ebron pick. I've been vocal on more than a few occasions about this pick.

I hated the pick because it was a waste. We could have had so many other good young players, and we took an extra TE.

I love the pick, because it means we will eventually cut Pettigrew, and I really really despise Pettigrew.

And after one season, it looks like this was a badly blown pick that will come back to haunt us now that Suh is left and we don't have Aaron Donald.

My feeling on the pick hasn't change a bit, but after one little year, I am glad Mayhew made the pick. "Woah Ink, W.T.F.?" you might be saying. Yes, I am happy the pick was made.

It took me all season and quite a bit more to wrap my head around it, but the fact is, the coaching staff wanted this pick. Lombardi wanted it. Caldwell backed him on it. And Mayhew made the pick.

It's been said Mayhew didn't want Ebron, he wanted Odell Beckham Jr. And for many of us, that might be running salt in the wound to hear. But now that I have figured it out in my own mind, it's not a bad thing for me.

I've watched team after team unravel itself by the GM and the coach never being on the same page. I've seen fan bases hate their GM for never giving the coach what he needed to win. I've seen teams wallow in misery while the GM or Owner took his guys, and damned be what the coach wanted.

For better or worse, Caldwell wanted Ebron. And Mayhew took him when the guy Mayhew wanted was still on the board. And it gives me solace to realize that we have a Gm and a Coach who will get the coach what he thinks he needs to win, even if the coach is just out of his fricking mind.

Two years from now, maybe Caldwell will have proven to be a bad hire, and that would be on Mayhew. Maybe he'll look like the next BilL Parcells, and that would be a credit to Mayhew. But the job of a GM is to hire the guy he thinks can coach, and then built that guy a team he can win with.

Mayhew didn't take the guy he wanted because he was doing his job. Only time will tell how ugly that will turn out to be, so far it ain't been pretty.. but at least we don't have a GM overriding the coach, which is the quickest way to a horrible team.

Entitled to your opinion, but this was a waste of a pick.

They could have chosen almost anyone after Ebron, and they would have received a very solid season. The rookies this season were sensational. The team already signed Pettigrew to a big contract.

Only 4 TEs were taken in the top 10 in like 25 years. It's a position that you can find value later on. A guy like Donald is going to be a stud and will cost pennies compared to Suh.

If you read my post, I agree with you. I still think it was a wasted pick. I hate the pick. The only reason I even remotely like the pick is we can cut Pettigrew, and I hate Droptimus Prime.

But I am happy we made the pick because the GM gave the coach what he wanted. I really hate that the coach wanted it, and I think Caldwell needs a psych exam, but I salute Mayhew for doing his job there and giving the coach what he felt he needed to win.

Let's hope the damned coach doesn't feel he really needs ANOTHER tight end this draft.

It's pretty bad that after pumping SO many draft picks into the defensive line, it's going to be one of the weakest parts of the team now.

Don't be so negative on the D-Line dubbsco.

With how weak our pass rush is likely to be, the secondary will be exposed for the frauds they are and should be a FAR worse unit than the D-line.

I am fine not drafting Donald.

We had two DTs already that we had drafted in the 1st Round.

While I get your points, fact is they brought in a guy who haf never been an OC before. IMO, you do NOT listen to that guy and back him over your own gut. If Mayhew really did want OBJ, he needed to explain that we are getting OBJ and after at least one year of proving he is a great OC then Lombardi would have earned more weight in terms of a first round pick.

Mayhew, your job was on the line. Eitherr OBJ or AD. Understanding the uocoming contract problems I agree AD would have been the wisest pick. Understanding CJ is going to soon or already has peaked, going with OBJ would have been the best pick. The GM is responsible for more than just getting guys the coaches request, he has to grasp the contractual pieces with laser precision. He has to solidly plan for the next several years.

Mayhew doesn't plan ahead, he continually is reactive instead of proactive while not demonstrating a viable vision for the future. This is why he fails.

I don't get it.. The GM, the one charge of making the final pick, didn't want Ebron but takes him anyway? Way to go Lions. This isn't NE it's fuckin' Caldwell Lombardass. Coaches should have input but not final say.

So mayhew took the advice of a first time ever ocord instead of getting his guy? Now thats the sign of a poor front office....

Oh bullshit. If Mayhew had taken his guy, and Ebron had been great and OBJ had been a first year flop, you two would both be bitching and crying that Mayhew didn't get the coach the guy he needed, and you know it.

Especially you Hughes, who tailors every post to be able to bitch about something. Your worse than many of the women I have dated in that respect man.

I'd say we'd need a new GM..anyway I'm not bitching because we didn't draft this guy or that guy but the fact we drafted a TE. I didn't bitch when we drafted backus or Matt or bunch of other guys because they were needs. We didn't need a TE at ten. Not after we resigned Petti.

When do you ever hear me bring up Beckham or Donald or anyone else for that matter?

Youve already stated the pick was dumb....esp with what we were facing contract wise. So when i say it's dumb then you complain about that too? That makes you worse than the bitchy women you've dated.

Ofcourse i bitch about mayhew....he fucking blows at his job. He cant draft worth a shit, has the team in cap hell year after year and needs like 4 undefeated seasons to hit .500. He sucks.

Ps...im still trying to figure out how a slow te that cant catch or block was ever viewed as "blue chip" or coukd have turned out "great."

Mismatch nightmare and shit, don't you know?

The pick shouldve been spent on defense, so yeah, in my eyes it was a terrible pick. We basically drafted a position we were fine at. Luxury picks make no sense when the team is incomplete. I would've liked Dix or even Dennard who I'm not even high on. Donald, I would've grown to appreciate, especially now. His presence when Fairley went down would've been huge.

Ebron doesn't give us much to look forward to, imo. He's not CJ, he's not Gronk. How many of us would've picked Ebron? Did anybody LOVE the pick? I took it better than alot of people on this board did, but still expressed that it shouldn't have been the pick.

Caldwell Lombardass? I am in tears.

I love how we have to create some kind of Bizzaro universe scenario where Mayhew actually got a pick right to highlight how bad someone is for always saying he is wrong.
