The Official Notre Dame vs ][V][ichigan Game Thread

You're right.

It was a totally different era.

For example, Urban Meyer, who is the head coach of a top 5 ranked team this season never coached a team to a national championship during Carr's tenure at Michigan; and also Nick Saban, who is I believe the head coach of the #1 ranked team in the nation right now also never coached a team to a national championship during Carr's tenure at Michigan.

Also when Carr coached at Michigan, they wore leather helmets and there were no face guards.

Totally different era.

Totally.

Wasnt the forward pass illegal during the Carr era? Or was that implied by the leather helmet comment?

Totally.

Saban won a title at LSU in 2003. Saban was able to keep all those highly sought after Louisiana recruits in state. After 4 years at LSU, he had his 1st championship.

Yeah. That was Tinsel's point. He knew that when he posted it.

I'm not trying to argue that Lloyd wasn't successful. He was.

The post said that Lloyd's O was more imaginative than the offense we saw on saturday at ND. That is the only thing that I was arguing against, not all the other stuff Tinsel is trying to bring up for some reason.

Yes.

I was being sarcastic but I think Bob was being sarcastic to begin with too, about Lloyd Carr?s comparative imaginativeness - if that?s a word.

Anyways I guess I?ve beaten this Dead horse to death, although when I?m a little more awake I might post a funny story that Lloyd Carr told about a former glee club conductor.

Whoever was calling the plays on Saturday Jim , Pep Hamilton, Jim McElwain the offense was not very good. It was very unimaginative and don’t get us all started on clock management and the 2 minute offense.

We did the same shit as last year . First and goal at the 5 run on first down for two and then throw on second down . We were sacked just like last seasons for a big loss and couldn’t recover. But in the fourth for our only offenses td they decided to run it in. When it was early in the game why not get behind the offensive line which we were told was going to be better and stronger and run the ball and try and give them some confidence. It was a very uninspiring Performance and I for one was very disappointed.
On defense we are talking about some really dumb boneheaded plays the probably cost us a chance to win the game. Are we not all tired of be worried on freaking 3rd and 18 verses a running qb. Apparently everyone but our defense knew he was going to run. Just play a base four four or a nickel and cover everyone man to man because he is not checking out and throwing the ball. I was really disappointed in Browns defense to start the game. It is all we hear about in the off season on how good this defense was going to be , and yet they can’t keep a really crappy Qb off the scoreboard in the first half. Bravo for holding them to a field goal in the second half though it made the score respectable lol..

24 points allowed to that shitty offense just means our defense has a long ways to go also.

Yes and no. But as of right now today I would take any of Carr’s offenses over Jim’s until Jim, Pep, or Jim M. figures it out. Like you said we won big ten titles and 1 national title under LC. So far under Jim other then his first season all I see is regression in play.
I for one Was hoping for so much more.

In my opinion, it was too imaginative.

Michigan got to the red zone and then started doing all kinds of creative shit that didn't work...again.

1st and goal from the 5, they run for 2 yards. 2nd and goal from the 3? An unimaginative offense would just keep punching it up the middle...nope! Let's go shotgun and 4 WR...take a 7 yard sack...I would rather have the unimaginative offense.

Yes I agree . They did the exact same thing last season in the red zone when we were told the line and running the ball was going to be stronger and a focal point this year. The 2 minute drill looked pretty suspect , and playcalling in general did not excite me. Team was not prepared for the big lights. Poor playcalling , Bobbled holds, dumb penalties, uninspiring defense until they were down 21-3. ND was 7 for 15 on third down. I thought we were better then that on defense ? Patterson did some good things but he also threw a terrible interception, and was sacked when the team was in field goal range. He also fumbled sadly on the last possession. Last I checked wasn’t Jim McElwain’s offense terrible at Florida ? I just don’t get the hiring of retreads over and over again .

Perfect answer about Brown’s defense from the free press writer .

“The defense was hunting for the big hit instead on play disciplined football.”

Why did we wait until the second half to open up the offense ? On the road we should have come out firing at Norte Dame instead of easing Patterson into the flow. Go down swing early and set the tone on offense .

It?s a different game.....holding teams to 10 or less is going to be rare for ANYONE......especially against solid competition. It?s a wide open, fast paced first to 50 world in college football. The days of running the ball 400 times a year are gone for most schools.

A good D.....which Michigan has....is a defense that will allow about 20/game against solid competition.

Gave up way too many 3rd down conversions. Get off the field when you're supposed to and you give up less points.. simple game.

Maybe this will light a fire under some asses. Totally inappropriate, BUT maybe this is needed. We know this team is talented.
Talent has been there for years. The o-line sucking every single year is the problem.

Harbaugh is not 0-17 against ranked teams on the road, Braylon...

Harbaugh is not 0-17 against ranked teams on the road, Braylon...

I think that might be the combined record of the guy that was brought on in 2008, Hoke and Harbaugh.

Or is that wrong?

Maybe it?s the last 17 ranked opponents in a row.

EDIT: The last road win I can find against a ranked opponent on the road was against Northwestern on October 29, 2005.

Am I wrong?
