The Official THE GA][V][E Game Thread

Regardless the season, fire the HC. You can't keep going 0fer vs your rival. Firing the D coach would be just a cop out.

Has anyone posted the obligatory annual ?I hope Michigan chooses not to go to a bowl game this season? yet?

It?s not an option. This is big business and Michigan has contractual obligations.

No, but Joe Milton should start and Shea can hold a clipboard.

Justin Fields quote:

"We take it more seriously than they do," Fields said. "Like (strength coach) Mickey Marotti said, 'We're preparing for them next year right now.' It just means more at Ohio State. That's pretty much the big reason.

"I know a few players on (Michigan) and I just know the things we do in terms of work outs and how serious we take it at Ohio State. So talking to those guys, and getting their perspective on things, I definitely see we take it more serious."

Hit the nail on the head. We're going to keep getting our asses kicked if it stays that way too.

Unfortunately, I don't see them getting rid of Brown . Hard to see a different DC doing worse.

Shea will play the bowl game. I really hope they try to win the bowl game and Shea is their best bet to do that. Plenty of time for the Milton vs McCaffrey thing to play out during the off season

Yeah, it's not that important to figure out which of our QBs will be the next to go 0 for their career against OSU. Have an offseason for that.

Let's concentrate on beating our real rival, Florida, in the Bikini Barbershop Bowl.

Well we have to try something because Jim is not working. And sadly this is just the last 8 Thanks Michigan. We need our guys to take it as seriously as they do.

2019 osu 56-27
2018 osu 62-39
2017 osu 31-20
2016 osu 30-27
2015 osu 42-13
2014 osu 42-28
2013 osu 42-41.
2012 osu 26-21.

There?s little chance that making a change will make things against OSU any better.

There?s a substantial likelihood it would make everything else worse.

Just the same way it happened when Lloyd Carr was replaced.

This is my least favorite narrative from this losing spell in The Game. Unless you're in the locker room, you don't have any leg to stand on with an argument like that.

You don't consistently win 9+ games a year and but then lose your most important game because you don't care. That's just stupid.

I couldn't agree more. The difference isn't coaching...it's the players. OSU consistently has better players than UM and it probably isn't even close.

Some big time recruits at "the game"

Among the standouts were frequent visitor, 2021 Clarkston (MI) four-star lineman Rocco Spindler, 2021 Cincinnati (OH) Roger Bacon four-star RB Corey Kiner (who OSU is also pursuing), 2021 Oradell (NJ) Bergen Catholic four-star DT Tywone Malone, 2022 Aurora (CO) Regis Jesuit four-star QB Nicco Marchiol (who made his second in-season visit), 2021 Winnetka (IL) New Trier four-star OT David Davidkov, 2021 Brentwood (TN) Academy four-star OT Eli Sutton, 2021 Bradenton (FL) IMG Academy four-star OT JC Latham and 2021 Belleville (MI) four-star DT Damon Payne.

The coaching could be better, but you're right. It bears out looking at the recruiting rankings, which aren't always right, but it sure seems to be the difference here. OSU is usually in the top 3. Michigan has had a few top 10 classes recently, but they also had one that was in the 25ish range. There is a huge difference there.

Of course, it is the coach's fault for recruiting, too.

I completely agree, it's a talent gap. It's not only that their classes are higher rated, but they're doing it with quality whereas Michigan is doing it with quantity. OSU usually has 2-3 5 stars and only a handful of 3 stars. Michigan has a bunch of 3 stars and may get an average of 1 5 star every year. There are guys in the recruiting class each year that don't get committable offers from the OSUs, Bamas and Clemsons of the world. And I get that there are exceptions but you can't expect to have them all perform above the level that years of scouting project them to perform. Michigan has not had a higher average rating per recruit than OSU since 2008. And they've been well below in average rating about every 2nd or 3rd year in that time.

And it doesn't help that a lot of their players are leaving the program. Solomon, St Juste and Singleton come to mind as guys that could have made a difference in the game yesterday.

I don't know what the answer is. You aren't going to cut the same amount of corners that they do and these kids were in 6th grade the last time you beat the worst OSU team in 50 years and you haven't won the conference title since they were in diapers. To them, Michigan is not a traditional powerhouse in football whereas OSU is.

Oh, and they also just took 1st place in highest winning percentage from Michigan with that win. So that's gone now, too.

They have Fields and Dobbins and Young. We took Young out of the game until it was to late. We made way to many mistakes, and some of them that can attributed to coaching. But let?s just go through the mistakes.. we were much closer in this game in Jim?s first 3 seasons. We are recruiting the same type of player.

Missed Extra point after opening Td. Why rush With odd formations ?
Patterson fumble.
Offsides penalty after stopping Osu. They score 2 plays later.
Personal foul hit on fields.
Down 15 early 4th fourth and 1 using the same damn wildcat formation for a
4th time in a row is just stupid.
4 or 5 drop passes including a bunch by Bell and DPj. I guess bell can be forgiven as he was crushed early in the game.

Or how about this .
It?s 2 and 13-18 yards and out stupid DC Blitz?s. The blitz comes from Fields right so he can see it and he throws a stupid 2-5 yArd pass to his Rb and our two players collide and he makes a easy first down. You don?t blitz on 2nd and long.
Or how?s this for coaching. After halftime we get a chance to adjust so what happens on play 1 of the third quarter. Our fucking DL gets pinned into the middle or whatever and Dobbins gained 41 yards.

Gattis has improved as the season has progressed but just like last year inside the 20 we seem to call a different game then what got them down there in the first place. Those 2 Patterson runs to Young?s side are a prime example. First one was ok it gained 4 yards. Wtf are you doing running it again ? Throw the damn ball.

Yeah they have better players but they also have better coaches who put their players in the right spot to win. It is clear to me Don Brown is Incapable of adjusting to what OSU is doing and it?s frustrating. They didn?t have better players last year. Remember how bad Osu defense was last season ? We were out coached and way out played in that game also. A game we were stupidly favored in. A Coach has to be there for some reason and getting your players ready to play and fired up To play a rival game should not be that hard but apparently it is.

The Gap to winning this game is getting larger and larger From Jim?s 1st season to his 5 the season. They are going to have to try something different. I am open to anything legal that works. New coaches. Same coaches whatever. But something has to change. We can?t keep making qb mistakes in recruiting . We have to Nail one of these top guys soon.

Michigan has to recruit better. The coaches have to.

Of course, you can't shoot yourself in the foot either. Better players don't shoot themselves in the foot...

Yes you are right. Better players don?t. Better coaches also make Better adjustments. I?m not saying Jim needs to be fired at all. But this defense needs to be looked at. It can hold Psu to 28 points Osu held them to 17. But lately it seems time and again Osu has Brown?s number. It is frustrating. I?m open to any and all suggestions to get us over the hump. Yesterday the team made way to many mistakes. Some of these are just basic fundamentals. Whatever it takes because we have the same resources as Osu. If not more.

The entire team needs to be looked at, not just the defense. The offense seemed to improve by the end of the year, but they still made a lot of mistakes.

They need to recruit better and coach better and the players need to play better. No doubt about it.
