THOUGHTFUL THURSDAY.
Totally Tigers
It?s been a crazy week in baseball. Lots of moves?.lots of signings ? and the Tigers finally added a competent shortstop to their roster.
And TT has covered it all which is why you didn?t see Watercooler Wednesday yesterday. However, for this day only, welcome to (apologies in advance) ??..
Thoughtful Thursday.
A chance for fans to take a deep dive into a topic that is anything but easy.
A chance to explore one of baseball?s hottest subjects and share opinions.
A chance to connect with other Tiger fans and create community.
So let?s kick this off!
There are only hours left before the current CBA expires. At the time of publishing this blog, it is believed that both the owners and players union are still far apart on a number of key issues. This means, of course, a lockout by ownership starting at midnight.
One of the negotiation points by owners is the desire to expand the playoffs. Currently, there is a 10-team playoff system. Owners want to add 4 more teams to create a 14-team playoff event.
Of course, adding more teams creates a longer playoff series. This means increased gate attendance, concessions, food and drink, etc. It also means more advertising dollars and tv revenue. Almost all of it for owners.
On the other hand, the players are not wild about this idea. While more teams would make the playoffs, they believe that it will negatively impact how aggressively organizations build their rosters in both the short- and long-term.
Increasing the number of teams who play in October would disincentivize organizations in making the necessary upgrades to their rosters. Studies show that playoffs have a randomness as to who wins. Players fear that Front Offices would not actively pursue signing and trading for the necessary players as they have in the past. That they would rely upon the odds and ?hot streaks? for winning.
In essence, the union fears a ?watering down? of the playoffs.
How do you feel? Should the playoffs remain as they have been or should they be expanded?
Please vote and share your thoughts. Extra points to readers who respond to others? ideas!
Should baseball keep or change the current playoff system?
1. Keep the 10-team playoff system.
2. Change the playoff system to include 14 teams.
