OPEN MIKE ? SPECIAL EDITION.
Totally Tigers

We hear that there is some special sporting event happening this weekend that doesn?t involve baseball. But we all need our baseball fix! This weekend is the perfect time to introduce a special version of Open Mike.

We?ll let this run through Monday in order to maximize the topics and the discussion.

Here are the rules:

A new comment must be in the form of a question. You have 2 sentences to ask other readers a question. You can ask for info or opinions. Whatever is on your mind, whatever you find interesting or whatever you feel will generate discussion.
2. If you?d like to respond to someone?s question, you?ve got 6 sentences to offer your opinion or information. You may reply to as many questions as you?d like.

The goal? To generate multiple threads (a topic followed by multiple responses). The more responses to a question, the better!

Today, another opportunity for readers to discuss the hottest topics in a forum where thoughtful dialog and a variety of opinions are welcomed.

Let?s create some running conversational threads. And for those of you still going into offices, here?s a question to take with you ? or use via Zoom calls ? as you talk to your co-workers.

Here is today?s hot topic.
One of the biggest issues for the players in negotiating a new CBA is the topic of player control. Currently, prospects who are just joining their MLB team are under team control for 6 years. Often, teams manipulate service time in order to get 7 years.

Players start with minimum salaries and then have 3 years of salary arbitration that is a combination of a universal scale combined with their contributions.

The big issue of concern for players centers around how their careers are controlled by teams. Team control allows organizations to receive (more often than not) the best years of a player at a minimal cost. When these players are finally free to pursue free agency, they are around 30 years old and teams are no longer interested in offering extended contracts for higher pay. These players are being squeezed out of the market with each passing year.

On the other hand, if team control was of a shorter duration, players would be able to seek free agency earlier in their careers. In turn, this may impact a team?s window of contention or remove a fan-favorite from the team sooner.

Should players be allowed to control their careers in less than 6-7 years?

Should the current team control rules for a player be changed?

1. No, allow teams to control a player for 6-7 yrs.

2. Yes, allow players to control their careers w/fewer years under team control.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Today, I?m turning the tables on you all. Instead of reading my latest top 5 list, you?re going to do it!

One question. Five answers. And if you can?t come up with 5, that?s OK, too, because it will give us an idea about your thoughts on the team.

Here are the rules:

1. Which 5 Tigers will you be watching most closely (for whatever reason) during the 2022 season?

2. Select only from this roster:

https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/payroll/

(Sorry, we?re making you work for this one so you can?t pick Spencer Torkelson or Riley Greene.)

3. List all 5 in one column, each on their own line. Just your list. No comments for this blog.

4. Next week, I?ll compile the results and report on them.

SUNDAY SURVEY.

The Detroit Tigers are expected to promote Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene this year. Potentially 1 or both may make the Opening Day roster.

Multiple scouts are reporting that Dillon Dingler is also close to his MLB debut and predict that he will also debut at some point later this summer.

Given these 2-3 promotions, combined with the seasoning of the young pitchers, what year do you believe the Tigers will turn into a viable competitive team? Let?s define this term as:

Finishing the year above .500.
Ending the year in either 1st or 2nd place
1 or more players ranked in the top 10 of at least 1 offensive/pitching category

What year do you believe the Tigers will become a viable competitive team?

1. 2022

2. 2023

3. 2024

4. 2025

5. 2026 or later

Tigers? spring training facility, even if none of the players on the 40-man roster are. One player in camp that caught his eye is Gerson Moreno, who was selected to the club?s roster after the 2017 season. 22 years old at the time, Moreno lasted just a few months on the roster as he required Tommy John surgery. The Tigers released and re-signed him in the summer of 2018. His rehab period wiped out most of his 2018 and 2019, then the pandemic wiped out the minors in 2020. Last year, Moreno was finally able to get some significant time on the mound, throwing 49 innings between Double-A and Triple-A. His 4.59 ERA doesn?t jump out, but his 33.2% strikeout rate is excellent. It does, however, come with an elevated 13.2% walk rate.
The Tigers spent big already this offseason to upgrade their rotation and lineup with Eduardo Rodriguez and Javier Baez but haven?t made a big move in the bullpen. If the 26-year-old Moreno can take a step forward, he could give them a boost from within.

Other than Eduardo Rodriguez, the Tigers? rotation consists of hurlers they drafted and developed: Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, Matt Manning and Tyler Alexander.

The next guy behind them on that path is Jackson Jobe. Selected by the Tigers with the third overall pick in last year?s draft, Jobe is just 19 years old and isn?t close to the majors, but is already drawing rave reviews. MLB Pipeline ranks him the 46th-best prospect in baseball and Baseball America places him in the 79th spot. One scout, who had nothing but superlatives to offer about the right-hander, giving Jobe?s fastball and changeup 70s and his breaking ball an 80, on the 20-80 scouting scale. Jobe is still quite young, meaning Tigers fans will need to be patient, but the scout offers this as the ceiling: ?If everything lines up, he?s the No. 1 starter in the big leagues on a championship team.?
