It?s interesting to read how so many fans are still holding onto the same list of roster needs that Al Avila had. Thinking the same way and selecting players that fit the old mold of the Avila roster years.

But this is a whole new ballgame. New(ish) owner, new manager and a new man in charge. Even new titles.

Everything is going to be new in this regime. Including the characteristics of every player who is signed.

PoBO Scott Harris has given us the parameters in a number of interviews and statements. Here are the top 5 things he?s going to be looking for before inking any player to the 2023 roster?..

The Tigers landed the 6th pick in the Competitive Balance A round. That should give them about $2 Million more in bonus pool money. It?ll be a while before we have the final draft order, but Detroit should have three picks in the top 50.

The Competitive Balance rounds for the 2023 Draft are set.
Here are the teams who will receive picks:

The Winter Meetings start tomorrow and run through Wednesday. It represents the opening salvo of the Hot Stove season when teams start trading players and signing free agents in earnest.

Scott Harris has promised significant changes to the Tigers? roster. Already, he has cut 16 players from the 40-man roster and added 7 new. It is expected that he will continue to churn the roster during both the off-season and 2023 year as he finds better players.

But as he meets with other execs and agents in San Diego, should he also consider adding a significant free agent? Someone who would command a 4-6 year contract somewhere around $23-$25 mill/year?

Teams generally add those level of players when they are close to competing.

Or should he wait and instead sign a handful of solid veteran players to short-term (1-2 years) contracts? Players who will help the team advance in the short-term and then be replaced by better players in a year or two.

Which option do you believe will help the Tigers the most?

What type of free agent should the Tigers sign for the 2023 season?

1. A more expensive higher-profile player requiring a 4-6 yr. contract

2. A couple solid veterans with 1-2 year contracts.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.
Totally Tigers

The Tigers are receiving interest from other teams in their relievers.
Most notably, Joe Jimenez, Alex Lange and Gregory Soto.

It is expected that at least 1 of them will be traded in order to fill some of the many holes in the Tigers roster. Currently, Scott Harris is building reliever depth in the minors in anticipation of this.

If you could trade only 1 of them, which reliever would you let go? Which one would bring the best return back to the Tigers?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts.
Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.

Detroit Tigers offseason preview: MLB Draft Lottery.
MCBTB

The MLB Draft Lottery takes place Tuesday night, and the Detroit Tigers currently hold the sixth pick in next year's draft.

For the first time ever, Major League Baseball will hold a lottery to determine the order of the top of the draft. The Detroit Tigers, currently holding the sixth pick, could rise, fall, or stay put depending on how the ping pong balls fall.

The Draft Lottery will be held Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. ET and will air on MLB Network. It was worked into the CBA during last year's lockout as an anti-tanking measure, where much like draft lotteries in other sports, the teams with the worst records still have the highest chance at landing the first overall pick, but it's not guarenteed.

All 18 teams that didn't make the playoffs in 2022 will participate in the draft, and thus all have a chance to get the first overall pick. The first six spots in the first round are determined, which means the team with the worst record?the Washington Nationals?could pick as low as seventh.

The odds range for the top six teams are a follows. The rest of the odds can be found here.

Nationals (55-107), 16.5%
A?s (60-102), 16.5
Pirates (62-100), 16.5
Reds (62-100), 13.2
Royals (65-97), 10.0
Tigers (66-96), 7.5

As you can see, the Detroit Tigers have a 7.5% chance of landing the first pick in the draft. The top three teams all have the same odds, which is also an anti-tanking measure. The rest of the draft after the lottery picks will go in reverse order of the teams' 2022 winning percentage.
