Tigers 2023 Spring Training Thread

Manning has been terrible this spring

Matt Manning
9 outs
8 baserunners
5 runs
hasn't been a very good spring for MAtt Manning

Final line for Tigers starter Matt Manning: 3.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 2 K.
Not good.

when the bus ride is over tonight..and DET gets back to Lakeland..there's gonna be an extremely uncomfortable discussion for Matt Manning with either AJ Hinch or Scott Harris..and his next start..will be fascinating.

Don't be shocked..if Matt Manning starts the year in TOL and Joey Wentz start in the rotation..you can only offer so many excuses when guys are surrounded by endless drama and excuses combined with intermitent performance and health.

Spring training for the Detroit Tigers is getting reeeeally interesting. Parker Meadows hit TWO, count 'em, 2 HRs today to lead the team. Offensively, he's one of the top players right now.

It's not a fluke. In the off-season, he changed his mechanics after hiring a hitting coach. The only concern? That he has had no experience beyond AA.

But the Tigers are in desperate need of offense. Can they afford to send him down to AAA? Should they keep him in Detroit? And wouldn't he be a great support for his brother who is trying to get back on track after last year?

It?s not every day you get two brothers in the same lineup.

Gibby talks to Austin and Parker Meadows about what Spring Training has been like and what it?s like playing the same sport as your brother.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch on Parker Meadows: "Right now, the best thing that we can do for him is to continue to expose him to more and more challenges and let him know he can stand on his own two feet against names (of pitchers) he recognizes."

RHP Trevor Rosenthal threw a bullpen session yesterday and said he felt great. He's slated for a live BP on Tuesday.

He's hopeful that a real game will be the next step after that, although he hasn't been told yet.

Tyler Nevin?s MRI on his oblique showed a Grade 1 strain. The Tigers said yesterday that Nevin?s strain was ?mild?, but offered no other details on when he might be available. MLB?s Health and Injury Tracking System says hitters typically take 27 days to recover from a Grade 1 strain. That?s not a concrete number, but it would appear to put Nevin in doubt for Opening Day.
Nevin, acquired from the Orioles this winter, was competing for a bench spot on the Tigers roster this year. The 25-year-old hit .197/.299/.261 with two home runs across 184 plate appearances for Baltimore last year.

Sticking with the Tigers, and right-hander Trevor Rosenthal threw a bullpen yesterday and felt great. He?ll throw a live bullpen on Tuesday, with the hope being that he?ll be ready to step into a live game after that.
Rosenthal, signed to a minor league deal by the Tigers this winter, hasn?t appeared in the big leagues for the past two seasons due to a range of injuries, including thoracic outlet syndrome, hip labrum surgery and a recurring hamstring injury.
While it wouldn?t be a surprise to see Rosenthal need a little longer than Opening Day to be ready, the former All Star looks a good chance to get some opportunities in Detroit?s bullpen this year.

DEEPER DISCUSSIONS.

Matthew Boyd is back in Detroit and at top form. He?s added new pitches, throwing in the 90?s and is controlling the strike zone. In multiple appearances, he?s walked only 1 player. In his last game, he struck out 7 in 3 innings.

Everyone in MLB is noticing. And Boyd is giving credit to his former and current boss, Scott Harris and the Giants? pitching lab where he spent last year perfecting his arsenal. And now, he?s also giving thanks to Chris Fetter.

The national writers are also taking note. They are speculating that Boyd will be traded later this year if he keeps up this level of performance.

Matt is on a 1-year deal for $10 mill. He is 32 years old and his agent is Scott Boras.

Which brings us to the question of selling off talent vs. keeping it. Dave Dombrowski usually won trades as GM for the Tigers but his successor was notoriously poor at getting value in return.

At what point do the Tigers stop trading away talent? Or do they need to continue shedding it for the next year or two in an effort to build the roster and add better players? Can they improve their roster via the farm system or are there too many holes to fill? If the former, how long would it take?

Should they re-sign Boyd and use him as a cornerstone of the starting rotation or should they trade him later this summer to a team thick in contention and in desperate need of an excellent starting pitcher? If Boyd continues his excellent performance, the Tigers could fetch a significant return despite his ?rental? status. Starting pitching is a very valuable trade piece.

What do you think the Tiger should do?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

For this one blog only, you?ve got 6 sentences max to share your thoughts. Of course, you can respond to as many other readers as you want.

TT will supply the ammunition. One thought-provoking question. Several options provided. One hard choice to be selected. One vote.
Ready?

If he excels this year, what should the Tigers do with Matthew Boyd?

1. Trade him to help build a better roster.

2. Keep him as the cornerstone of the starting rotation.
