Tigers and MLB 2018 offseason

And just to be clear he might be the worst 2B of all time I'm just curious. It seems like at least on defense '16-'17 were good years. As I pointed out I don't know about his past season.

I am sure I read his defense has dropped from the years he was good defensively. Add that to the low obp and he will be here for not longer than
a year or until the trade deadline.

Granted he's not much but defensively I think he's better than Goodrum right?

2 things are guaranteed in life ...we all die and Reb will bitch about EVERY single thing the Tigers do .

Obviously you only retort when I do. Check my history, I am a Goodrum backer before most everyone on here knew who he was. What I do not like is impatient hitters who do not have another skillset that offsets that. Obviously you don't care.

Then at least enlighten me why he's so bad.

Defensive stats/metrics are one of the worst to discuss, even among sabermatics. Additionally, they tend to be volatile with less sample sizes. Normalization usually occurs over multiple years of data. J.D. Martinez had a very good year in 2015 for defensive metrics (slightly above average). There is no one that would consider J.D. Martinez slightly above average, except if they only looked at 2015.

Fielding Percentage only is relevant to the balls a player gets to. A player could be a statue and have a very high FPCT.

Range Factor is not what you think. Put Outs + assists per 9 innings. On a team full of strikeout pitchers, there are less balls in play, meaning less opportunity to make a play on a ball, less range factor. A team full of groundball pitchers, means I have more opportunities. PIT was in the top 5 in groundballs in 2016 and 2017.

DRS, like HRs or RBIs, is a counting stat. More opportunity means a higher DRS. Full time players by nature have more opportunities. Additionally, there are certain components to DRS (e.g. Homerun Saving Catches) that tend to have biases based on parks. How does a LFer in BOS get a Homerun Saving catch in front of the green monster?

UZR/150 is a rate stat. While not great, especially for only 1 year worth of data, it is probably the best at evaluating against the league.

Harrison ranks 22nd of 29 MLB 2B from 2016-2018 in UZR/150. His RZR (Revised Zone Rating) is 23rd. This is based on 1500 innings at 2B.

Goodrum does not have the sample size to draw any MLB comparisons.

I'll take him back for that even if we already signed a SS.

He is definitely better and younger than Jordy Mercer. Which is why signing Jordy Mercer early in Free Agency the price the Tigers paid even more ludicrous.

Yankees, Aaron Hicks agree to a seven-year, $70 million extension

Probably helped by the wall in RF but seems like a bit much. Must be a good CF.

In case you missed in the minor league thread:

Tigers are ranked 15th. While it is an improvement from years past, the are where they improved was not on high end prospects, but mid-level prospects. They did not raise the ceiling of the organization, they raised the floor.

We could be worse off. Look at BAL. Not only do they suck at the MLB level, they are one of the worse minor leagues. And they virtually have no high salary guy worth anything in trade. Anyone want Trumbo or Chris Davis? They should have gotten something more than what they are going to get for Machado leaving.

If you look individually we have a prospect rated 21 in Mize, best we've had in a while. 3 top 100, it's been awhile.

Baseball America Top 100
**BOLD** = MLB All Stars

2019 = Mize (16), Manning, Paredes

2018 = Perez (35), Faedo, Manning

2017 = Manning (61), Stewart

2016 = Fulmer (47)

2015 = None

2014 = Castellanos (25), Travis

2013 = Castellanos (21)

2012 = Turner (22), Castellanos

2011 = Turner (21), Castellanos, Oliver

2010 = Turner (26), Crosby, A. Jackson

2009 = Porcello (21)

2008 = Porcello (21)

2007 = Maybin (6), A. Miller (10)

2006 = Verlander (8), Maybin, Zumaya

2005 = Granderson (57), Sleeth

2004 = Sleeth (36), Clevlen

2003 = Bonderman (20), German

2002 = Cornejo (55), Baugh, Infante

2001 = Inge (67), Munson, Santiago

2000 = Munson (23), Santiago

1999 = Kapler (34), Weaver

1998 = J. Encarnacion (15), M. Anderson (24), F. Cordero

1997 = Drumright (35), Greisinger

1996 = Drumright (62)

1995 = T. Clark (86)

1994 = J. Thompson (79), D. Bautista

1993 = Gohr (94)

1992 = Gohr (79), J. Thompson, Brogna

1991 = Brogna (35)

1990 = T. Fryman (39), Brogna, Aldred

Since 1990 (30 years), only Verlander and Travis Fryman have been multiple All Stars as a Tiger. Most of the others were either 1 year All Stars, or they made the All Star after leaving DET.

DET has only 13 of the 30 years of their top player being in the top 30 (1 per team). Of the 44 different players listed over the last 30 years, only 17 (38.6%) have been position players. 21 of the 38 that have had a chance at a MLB career, have not even had much if any of a MLB career.

Since 1990, DET is one of 3 teams to never have 4 players in the Top 100. There were 18 teams with 3 or more prospects in the top 100 in 2019.

2019 Teams with at least 4 players in Top 100

2019 = 10 (2 teams with 9, SDP and TBR)

The point is, some how when we get ranked higher than what we have in the past, we get ecstatic. Why? We are still historically one of the worst teams in drafting their own players. When/or if we get 4 or more players in the top 100, then I will get excited. 9 would be a dream.
