Tigers FO thread, Scott Harris Pres. of Baseball Ops,Tigers Hire Jeff Greenberg GM

The Tigers are dead middle in payroll, yet only 2 teams have fewer analytics/data workers than Detroit?s 7. Explains a lot about poor drafting & even development. Look at the Rays as a guide. Hell, even Arizona, who have built up a number of good young assets.

Baseball existed a long time before these analytics. But the drafting, a lot of the guys we drafted would have been drafted in the same spot if other teams drafted them. Somehow they just seem to fail here.

I think they have to trade him.

I also wouldn't wait til the trade deadline. I'd be fielding offers asap. This current regime has definitely been good at squeezing every bit of talent out of their pitchers, but they've been horrible at keeping them healthy.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that Jonathan Schoop?s struggles from last year are continuing this year. Early on, A. J. Hinch started platooning him. And given Javy Baez?s injury, Schoop had to take his place in the lineup the other day to disappointing results.

What should the Tigers do? Remove him from the roster in favor of a current player? If so, then another roster move will need to be made and positions will need to be shuffled. Or should they wait a little longer until a player from AAA is ready to take over?

For the record, Justyn -Henry Malloy is not a candidate yet given he?s only played 23 games in AAA.

How each player bats will be a factor. So will their slash lines. (If you didn?t catch the recent blog on how to interpret slash lines, here it is: https://totallytigers.wordpress.com/2023/04/24/the-four-keys-of-player-evaluation/ )

Here are the stats for each potential choice:

Jonathan Schoop (RH) .205/.286/.227/.513

Ryan Kreidler (RH) .111/.111/.111/.222 (Detroit stats only)

Nick Maton (LH) .149/.259/.351/.610

Zach McKinstry (LH) .265/.321/.449/.770

What should the Tigers do about Jonathan Schoop?
Keep him and wait for AAA prospect.
Replace him with Ryan Kreidler.
Replace him with Nick Maton (who would need to move).
Replace him with Zach McKinstry.

The Detroit Tigers continue their significant drought at the plate. In a search for answers, many are noticing how well Justyn-Henry Malloy is doing in Toledo. His slash line is a very impressive .358/.495/.519/1.014 (through Thursday).

However, Malloy has only played in 23 games (through Thursday) at the AAA level. And we know that how well you hit in the minors cannot be translated into how well you will do in the majors.

Malloy?s other issue is his defense. He?s very rough at 3B. There is some talk that the Tigers may move him to another position.

There is concern based upon last year?s example when Spencer Torkelson was brought up to Detroit too early and struggled the entire year while also being demoted back to Toledo. It is believed that his early debut set him back in his development.

But the Tigers are desperate for offense. What should they do?

Should they promote Malloy or give him more time in Toledo?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

Ready?

Should the Tigers bring up Justyn-Henry Malloy?

1. Yes, now.

2. No, he needs more experience at AAA.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

The Tigers have played just over a month of baseball so it?s time to turn our attention to what we?re now seeing.

As I?ve written over the past couple weeks, this team?s performance is going to resemble that of a roller coaster. Some great games followed by disappointing performances. Slow starts by some players who then start to blossom. And impressive starts that ended up being less so.

And I don?t expect it to change.

I can tell you that a number of players have grown on me so far. And yes, some players I?ve become disappointed in. All of this could change once again.

But in the meantime, here?s a challenge for all of us. It involves positional players only as we haven?t seen a bigger sampling of pitchers quite yet.

If you could pick only 5 positional players to hang onto going forward as the building blocks of this team, who would you pick? They must have spent at least some time on the 26-man roster. And yes, you can include those on the IL.

We?ll compile results and report back. But please, for tabulation purposes, submit your list in alphabetical order.

Without further adieu, here is mine:

her 5
1. Kerry Carpenter
2. Riley Greene
3. Zach McKinstry
4. Jake Rogers
5. Matt Vierling

That list shows just how terrible the Tigers roster is. I do like Carpetner, Greene, and Rogers. I'm not sold on the other 2. I think I would still have to put Tork on the list. So young and so many good tools. I would give him more time

In his efforts to rebuild the Tigers? roster, PoBO Scott Harris made a large number of waiver wire acquisitions. He also made 3 trades.

In exchange for Joe Jimenez, he acquired Justyn-Henry Malloy and Jake Higginbotham. Malloy is expected to make the team later this season.

He also traded Gregory Soto and Kody Clemens and got Nick Maton, Donny Sands and Matt Vierling in return. Soto is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA. Clemens is hitting .200.

Meanwhile, Maton is hitting .163 but he leads the team in both HRs and RBIs. Sands is in AAA for catching depth. Vierling leads the team in BA and has 1 of the top slash lines.

Harris acquired Zach McKinstry in exchange for giving up a minor league pitcher. Zach has the team?s best slash line.

What do you think about Harris? trading acumen so far? Did he make good deals? Did he win 1 or more of these trades?

Please grade him overall.

What grade would you give Scott Harris for the 3 trades he's made so far?

1. Solid to great

2. Crossing my fingers

3. Disappointed

I would vote #2. The guys he got that are playing for the Tigers are all backups on a team with an actual major league roster. The wild card is Malloy. If he turns out to be a legit starting caliber 3B, then the trade is a win.

My vote is also #2 . To early to tell and the organization is blocking Henry-Mallory. The kid is hitting and should be up with the club. We could have been over .500 maybe .

He has been terrible defensively. Also, look at some of the other guys that were raking at Toledo. It doesn?t always translate to Detroit.

Gotta find out sooner or later. I?m sure he is a better Dh option then miggy right now.

The Detroit Tigers? Eduardo Rodriguez continues to impress everyone with his pitching this year. He had yet another stellar performance opposite Justin Verlander, pitching 8 scoreless innings for the win.

He is 3-2 with a 1.81 ERA and a miniscule .784 WHIP.

ERod signed a contract for $77 mill and is currently being paid $14 mill which ups to $18 mill next year followed by the last 2 years at $14 mill ? $15 mill.
He ranks somewhere after #40 in terms of most expensive starting pitchers and has an opt out after this year.

It is widely expected that if Eduardo has a solid year, he will opt out from his contract after this season.

Should the Tigers allow him to walk or should they offer a contract extension/renegotiate his contract? Rodriquez would be expected to want an additional 2-3 years tacked onto his current one. He is currently 30 years old and any new contract would be expected to take him to age 35 ? maybe even longer.

He is currently making in the mid-teens which is considered to be a relative bargain. He may be wanting something closer to $20+ mill/year going forward.

What should the Tigers do?
