WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

The Detroit Tigers are currently 8 games under .500 (through Monday?s games) and 7 games out of 1st place. They are just 3 games out of 2nd place.

Next Tuesday is the trade deadline. The Tigers have 4 pitchers (ERod, Lorenzen, Cisnero and Shreve) on either opt out or expiring contracts. Conceivably, they could lose all 4 at the end of the year and get nothing in return if they aren?t traded.

There are also other players rumored to be of interest to other teams.

What should be the goal of this organization be as we approach the trade deadline?

Keep the top performers mentioned and work towards having the best year possible? Potentially even aiming for a wild card slot?

Or should this organization use the trade deadline to improve the roster going forward? Adding new and needed talent and depth by trading off players who are unlikely to be here next year?

One option may provide a short-term thrill. The other, short-term disappointment followed by a stronger future.

Which choice would you select?

This is today?s question to kick start some good discussion threads here ? and to take with you wherever you go during the rest of the week.

With the approaching trade deadline, which option would you pick?

1. Keep the trade candidates and try to finish the year as strong as possible.

2. Trade players and start building for the future.

We are just days away from the August trade deadline and the rumors are flying.

And that?s just what they are. Rumors.

It?s one of the most used strategies to generate interest and bidding wars. Or to deflect attention away from what you?re really trying to do during this time.

Teams have been known to use employees as decoys and go around a baseball conference and ?whisper? about their team?s ?interest? in a player.

No rumors should be taken seriously. That is unless you have Al Avila as your GM who would regularly blurt out who he was trying to trade.

So what are the biggest rumors floating out there about the Tigers? I?ve got my top 5 of stories not to be believed.

Now that the Tigers have entered the 2nd half of the season, we have enough information to make some evaluations about the players.

Almost everyone believes that Riley Greene is becoming a very special type of player. Thus his performance so far has more or less been meeting our high expectations.

But what about the others? Are there players who have pleasantly surprised us? Players we expected would be performing at a lower level? Player who are now doing better than we thought?

Miguel Cabrera is a shell of his former self due to chronic injuries that no longer allow him to hit for power. After an extremely rough start to the season, he hit .304 in June and .303 in July. He continues to methodically work his way up the 3,000 hit club ladder.

Kerry Carpenter is 1 of the leaders in extra-base hits and currently has the team?s best slash line. He is also slowly improving in the outfield.

After Greene and Carpenter, Matt Vierling has the best OBP and is the Tigers? best defensive player. He was acquired by the Tigers over the winter. He is expected to eventually take over the CF slot with Greene moving to a corner position.

And finally, there is Spencer Torkelson. Brought up too early last year, he struggled through 2022 and much of 2023. His stats have improved. His BA of .232 and OBP are not among the highest of the team, but he does lead everyone in HRs and RBIs, partially due to his positioning in the heart of the order.
Which of these 4 have pleasantly surprised you the most?

Which Tiger has pleasantly surprised you the most so far this year?

1. Miguel Cabrera

2. Kerry Carpenter

3. Spencer Torkelson

4. Matt Vierling

The Detroit Tigers will be sellers once again at this trade deadline and they have 4 clear trade candidates. Eduardo Rodriguez who is widely expected to opt out of his contract and Michael Lorenzen, Chasen Shreve and Jose Cisnero who are on expiring contracts.

All 4 are considered to be rentals, thus lowering their value. They are not expected to receive solid MLB-experienced players in return, nor a team?s top-ranked prospects because of that.

Should the Tigers trade 1 or more of these 4 pitchers, what is your preference for the type of player?

Do you want the Tigers to acquire players with MLB experience who can be plugged into the current roster?

Or would you prefer that they get minor league prospects who can be developed by the Tigers new player development program and also provide depth to the team?

Prospects would most likely be ranked higher than MLB-ready players.

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

PIECES OF THE PUZZLE ? Part One.

Oh my, what an ugly week this has been so far. So many Tiger fans up in arms. I even heard that all the Detroit-area hardware stores were sold out of torches and pitchforks.

More than a few fans were calling for Scott Harris? head. They wanted him fired for making 1 mistake. All of this for a man who has only spent 10 months on the job.

I guess after all those decades of incompetent sports team leaders, fans have been conditioned to automatically turn every top Detroit team exec into either Matt Millen or Randy Smith.

But what struck me was the sudden rush to judgment that this was all Scott Harris? fault. Blame assigned within nanoseconds and an impatience to wait for the facts to come out.

To assume incompetence is the answer without exploring the facts and rationale is lazy and negligent. But I get the fact that when something like this happens, fans get upset and jump to conclusions because of the need to expel their frustration and anger.

Truth is, folks, anytime you put a group of people together to hammer out a deal, it?s likely to be complicated. You?re dealing with human nature which is unpredictable most of the time.

I learned long ago that things are rarely black and white. Most of the time, we live in a grey world.

And the trade deadline is a classic example.

It?s so easy to come to an all-or-nothing decision instead of digging through information to discover what was really going on. The latter takes time and energy, which many simply don?t want to do.

And for fans ? which is short for ?fanatics? ? many allow themselves to be ruled by emotion.

It?s some of these same fans who have accused me of making excuses for Scott Harris simply because of the facts I pointed out yesterday. Facts that didn?t support a singular blame game.

You should know me better than that if you?ve been reading TT for awhile. This blog has always been about discussing the unvarnished truth ? both the good and the bad. There is no rush to judgment here.

There is, however, a gathering of facts.

The truth is that there were so many players (not just of the athletic kind) involved ? both past and present. A complicated contract. A player with baggage. People in charge who we either don?t know or have little info to go on. And little understanding of how deals and trades are made.

This turned out to be the perfect storm of misadventure.

And it can?t be blamed on just one person.

This is turning out to be a bigger story than anyone imagined. So much so that we?re going to split this blog into 2 parts. Today, we?re going to share the facts leading up to the final decision. We?re also going to ask a lot of questions.

Tomorrow, we?re going to address what this means for the Tigers going forward.

Let?s now get out our biggest, baddest shovels and dig in?.....

You knew it was coming. I told you yesterday that it would.

And sure enough, the details of the failed trade between the Tigers and Dodgers are leaking out.

Too many people left with egg on their faces. Too many experienced people for something like this to happen.

Too many people shocked at the outcome.

Too many PoBos making stifled diplomatic comments to explain what happened.

Many of you knew the facts as presented didn?t add up. It meant there were rogue factors at play.

And now some of the people who were involved in the work are speaking anonymously. They?re clarifying that ERod was a willing trade partner and that both teams communicated often and effectively with him. And that his rationale for blocking the trade doesn?t hold water.

Let?s summarize what really happened. Here?s what various members of the media have verified:

E-Rod and his agent did this....

In the aftermath of the MLB trade deadline, there has been some discussion about the Tigers not trading Jose Cisnero or Chasen Shreve.

But how realistic was it that they could even be traded? Both stated that they did not expect to get traded.

Cisnero and Shreve are 2-month rentals which greatly diminishes their value. Cisnero has a 4.01 ERA and is 34 years old. He does have 5 different pitches and his walk and strikeout rates were better this year. Shreve has a 5.03 ERA and has a career-high hits-per-9-innings and is 33 years old. His splitter earns high marks in strikeouts and chase rate.

The combined salary for both Cisnero and Shreve is $3.5 mill. Both have contracts that expire after this year.

In comparison, only a handful of teams ? all contenders ? traded for relievers. The 2 top trades did not involve rentals and returned single prospects who ranked #9 and #29 in their respective former organizations.

What could the Tigers have gotten for Cisnero and Shreve if there was a market for them?

Is it better to keep these players on your roster for the rest of the year if you can?t get a comparable value in return?

If they were traded, did the Tigers have other arms in the farm system to replace them?

Is it better to trade just to say you made a trade or is the better move sometimes the one you don?t make?

These are the questions to ask yourself and others as we ponder the conditions that make for a good or bad trade. Let?s kick start some good discussion threads here ? and to take with you wherever you go during the rest of the week.

Is it better to trade a secondary player knowing you won't get a comparable value in return just to be able to say you made a trade?

1. Yes, trade him no matter what the return is.

2. No, keep him and focus on allowing the team to finish the year as strong as possible.

I voted trade them no matter what the return. Look at that 19th round pick (Bigbie) that is tearing it up at the plate this year. You never know what some young prospect might turn into. You definitely know what you get when a player leaves for free agency...nothing!

We?re into the last third of the 2023 season and the bloom is officially off the rose for many Tiger fans. The number of games under .500 has gradually increased even despite the series win against the Twins. The team is now 7 games out of 1st place. Talk of the potential of earning a wild card or taking the AL Central is no longer being taken seriously.

But does this mean there?s nothing left to look forward to watching this year?

No, but the goals have changed.

Instead of a focus on winning, attention is now turning to next year by looking at the promising bits we may be seeing now. With 1 exception.

Here are my 5 reasons for continuing to watch what is left of this season.

The Detroit Tigers have reached the last third of their season. Despite the series win against the Twins, they have been slowly falling further under .500 and in the AL Central standings.

So what will keep you focused on the remaining games?

Will it be Miguel Cabrera?s march towards immortality as he finishes his last season and keeps moving up the hits chart?

Will it be waiting to see which prospects like Parker Meadows and Justyn-Henry Malloy get called up from Toledo?

Will it be the surprise of Kerry Carpenter who has the potential of becoming one of the league?s best hitters?

Will it be Riley Greene, the hope of all fans and potentially the next face of the franchise?

Or will it be Spencer Turnbull and his return to the mound in order to build up his trade value for this winter?
Which one will you have the most interest in watching?

Who will you be most interested in watching for the rest of the season?

1. Miguel Cabrera

2. The Call-Ups

3. Kerry Carpenter

4. Riley Greene

5. Spencer Turnbull

In just a few weeks, the Detroit Tigers will be calling up some highly-anticipated prospects. Currently, they are editing their rosters, DFA?ing players and creating openings that may change the players on the 40-man roster.

It is expected that Parker Meadows will see Detroit in just a couple weeks. And a number of analysts are also predicting that Justyn-Henry Malloy will be added to the 40-man roster and also come up for an audition.

Both men play the outfield which is getting increasingly crowded.

Next year, it is expected that the outfield will have Riley Greene and Matt Vierling holding down slots. Akil Baddoo may also be part of that equation. So will Kerry Carpenter who is not expected to become solely the DH (teams no longer have 1 person who fills that role these days) and is also much too young to fill that slot more than 1-2 times/week.

The Tigers will have a minimum of 3 full-time outfielders in 2023. Another is expected to be part-time. And sadly, we cannot expect that Austin Meadows will return.

And now, 2 more may be competing for outfield jobs next year.

Which one ? P. Meadows or Malloy ? do you believe will be the best choice to earn an outfield spot?

Don?t just consider their offensive strength. Consider the ballpark, whether they hit LH or RH, their defensive range, whether they can become a plus defender and their speed.

Consider the whole package.

I voted Meadows because of his defense. I thought Malloy was a 3B? Maybe he stinks defensively so they are trying him in the OF???

I think Baddoo is done. He had plenty of opportunities and just hasn't showed enough to warrant a spot on the roster anymore.

They need to address 3B and 2B this off season.
