Tigers FO thread, Scott Harris Pres. of Baseball Ops,Tigers Hire Jeff Greenberg GM

IMO Vierling will be the starting CF next year if Meadows doesn't make the team. The Tigers need a 3B with a good bat, not just stick someone there because he can play the position. If Meadows makes the team and is the CF, let Vierling be a 4th OF, 3B sub, and maybe even DH as needed. If he's as good of an athlete as they say, he should be able to play 1B as well. He might be a really good bench player. Unfortunately, on this current roster, he's one of their better hitters

'Days of Roar' Tigers Podcast: Detroit Tigers' front office moves, and the art of pitching. 63 minutes.

On this episode: This week, Evan's feeling a little "The Godfather Part III" as the Detroit Tigers manage to pull him back in after last week's rant and Mark is surprised by his defense of the front office on a certain lack of moves. Later in the pod, the guys take a deep dive on Matt Manning and pitching.

Players behaving badly appears to be the theme of this week. To be more accurate, it?s more like star players behaving badly.

Now that Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer have been traded, Mets players are unloading on them. Both being described as ?difficult.?

They called JV a ?diva? and someone only concerned with himself, while ignoring the rest of the team. Max, as we know, flamed team ownership and management, and was caught surprised when he was immediately traded. Just this week, he had another meltdown on the mound with his new team when things didn?t go his way. Three episodes and counting so far this year.

We now know that both did not get along when they were with the Tigers and there were problems with 3 out of the 5 starting pitchers during those last playoff years.

It has been insinuated that the issues surrounding these 2 players with both the Tigers and Mets negatively impacted their team chemistry.

Of course, there have been plenty of other incidents of star players causing disruptions and distractions to their organizations. Enough to disrupt the balance of personalities and performance to various degrees.

And this week, another alleged scandal involving one of baseball?s best players ? Wander Franco. He is now on unpaid leave while MLB investigates. (Nothing is yet official and the subject is a delicate one so we will not be getting into the details of what supposedly transpired. Nor will we be approving any comments today that delve into this subject matter as a result.)

Over a year ago, the Tampa Bay Rays made their first really big investment by signing Franco to a 12-year contract that is worth a maximum of $223 mill. He is their best player.

But there have been some red flags. Bad decisions, immaturity or attitude problems depending upon whom you ask. One in particular that teed off teammates and got him benched for multiple days. Yet despite instances over the past 2 years, he got the mega-contract anyway.

And now, if things go really south, the Rays could be taking a really big hit both competitively and financially.

It?s a huge risk when extreme talent, personality issues and really big bucks collide. For some, the risk pays off. For others, it can cost a team dearly.

Which brings us to ask how important a player?s personal make up is in comparison to his talent.

Is having a difficult/demanding personality worth having on a team esp. when their talent is significant?

Or is the price created by their behavior too much of a cost when it comes to the overall roster and team performance?

What would you do if faced with a similar situation? Is it all about getting the talent or are there other factors to consider?

How should big talent and personality be addressed when giving out mega-contracts?

1. Talent is the only thing that matters.

2. Bad behavior and ?me first? attitude are deal breakers.

3. Both talent and behavior require equal scrutiny before a contract is offered.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.

The Detroit Tigers have started to prepare for the end-of-the year evaluations and preparations for the Hot Stove season. Almost every day, minor league prospects are being DFA?d or re-assigned. Some players are getting promoted within the farm system and soon we can expect that players will be called up to Detroit.

These moves are expected. Scott Harris came in with essentially a clean slate and he and his new hires are putting fresh eyes on everyone they inherited.

We?re also seeing moves being made at the MLB level. Players like Matt Vierling now spending quality time at 3B to see if he may be the solution there for the 2024 season.

At some point in early October, Harris will have his shopping list of needs. Some of his holes will be filled in-house, some by promoting prospects. The rest will necessitate the team going outside the organization and utilizing either trades or signing free agents.

So what do the Tigers need most of all? I?ve got my top 5 list.....

PoBO Scott Harris is accelerating his weeding out of prospects in the minors, DFA?ing numerous players, promoting others and freeing up roster spots. Some of these moves correlate with the positions this team most needs.

His moves are being seen as preparation for the off-season when the Tigers will try to fill the shopping list they are currently developing. It is expected that the positions most needing to be filled may end up being a combination of inside moves, trades and free agent signings.

Harris came into the position with more holes in the Detroit roster than those filled. Some areas were settled while other experiments did not work out.

If you were the GM, which of these positions needing to be filled is most urgent? If you could only fill 1 opening, which would it be?

Today?s blog addresses this dilemma and allows readers to share their thoughts in more detail. And hopefully, to actively engage with others by responding to their posts and creating back-and-forth discussion threads. The more the merrier!

Ready?

Which position is the most crucial for the Tigers to fill in 2024?

1. Starting pitcher

2. Relief pitcher

3. Catcher

4. Second baseman

5. Third baseman

6. Shortstop

7. Outfield

I like to read the comments section because sometimes Holly answers the comment like in this one.

I agree 100%. However, I find her "Avila bashing" and her "Harris ass kissing" nauseating.

As for the additions Harris has or has not brought in, I disagree with her assessment. There is no reason that he couldn't have brought in some better players than the scrubs that he has acquired during the free agent period last off season.

I wish that I had that much time on my hands to dissect the Tigers down to the quantum level.

And she says first base is ... set? Torkelson is a defensive liability that a championship team cannot suffer.

And where is the parallel story of CI extending AA's contract when he should have been fired?

Ultimately, I don't think that CI will ever build a championship team, but one that gets good enough to compete for one and win a playoff series once in a while.

I give this whole new group 2 to 3 years tops!!!
By then they should have built up the farm at each stop and found a team that can contend.

Today, it?s about quick hits ? thoughts that hit me from the previous week as well as connecting the dots regarding ongoing stories. Even the quirky bits, too.

There will be something here for everyone.

So let?s get to it! Here are the top 10 topics that hit my brain cells over the past week???..

from her article

So many Tiger fans are failing to notice how well some of the newest acquisitions are doing. First, there?s Matt Vierling who ranks among the top in outfield defense.

She is so focused on supporting Harris and his moves that she failed to mention that he is well below average at the plate. .682 OPS overall, and .544 since the all star break. IMO, he's a bench player

Verifying is a 9th inning guy when we have the lead or when its a blowout.
