Tigers FO thread, Scott Harris Pres. of Baseball Ops,Tigers Hire Jeff Greenberg GM

WATERCOOLER WEDNESDAY.
Totally Tigers

Detroit Tigers? PoBO Scott Harris is currently remaking the roster. Auditioning players and moving them around to determine their maximum value to the team.

Some players will be leaving given expiring contracts. Others will be non-tendered.

But Harris also needs to determine which players are most likely to be trade-bait. And we know that the team will need a lot of new players over the next couple years at least.

It is unrealistic that all the teams? needs will be satisfied via free agent signings. Or that all the answers exist in the farm system.

There will have to be trades done in order to fill the necessary holes.

And if the Tigers want to find players who are solid and capable, they will need to give up players of value.

The better the player, the better the trade they receive in return. Potentially, multiple players.

This means that Detroit will have to consider trading away some young promising talent. It could be one of their top draft picks who is currently in Detroit, a young starting pitcher or one of their top farm system prospects.

What would you do if you were the GM? Would you risk trading away solid talent in order to get better?

These are the questions to ask yourself and others as we ponder just how much better the Tigers need to be. Let?s kick start some good discussion threads here ? and to take with you wherever you go during the rest of the week.

Would you trade solid talent away in order to improve the Tigers' performance?

1. Yes.

2. No.

"Auditioning players and moving them around" ... color me uninformed ... but doesn't the manager make the lineups, Moneyball movie excepted?

Like Tommy Lasorda so clearly and rationally expressed to Doug Rau in G4 of the 1977 World Series?

Jeff Greenberg Named General Manager of the Detroit Tigers.
IlitchNewsHub

After a year-long vacancy in the role of General Manager, the Detroit Tigers today announced that Jeff Greenberg, an exceptionally innovative and progressive executive, has agreed to take on the role. Greenberg will be the 20th General Manager in the 123-year history of the club, dating back to 1901.

Greenberg, 37, will report to President of Baseball Operations, Scott Harris, and joins the Tigers after spending the last 16 months as an Associate General Manager with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Prior to joining the Blackhawks, Greenberg spent 11 seasons with the Chicago Cubs, including his final three seasons as an Assistant General Manager. He also held roles as Director of Pro Scouting and Baseball Operations, Director of Baseball Operations and Assistant to the General Manager. While with the Cubs, Greenberg played a key role in creating the systems and strategies that helped the Cubs scout and develop talent, leading to five postseason appearances during his tenure, including the 2016 World Series championship.

?I?m thrilled to add an executive of Jeff?s quality to our baseball operations leadership team,? said Harris. ?Throughout this search, it was important for me to find someone who can fit seamlessly into the culture we?re building here.
I also wanted to bring in someone with a fresh perspective and new ideas that could challenge us on a daily basis and make us all better as we strive towards our goal of bringing postseason baseball back to Detroit. We?re excited to welcome Jeff, his wife, Erin, and their sons, Leo and Sam to the Tigers family.?

In his most recent role with the Blackhawks, Greenberg oversaw the strategic systems and processes in hockey operations. He worked across all functions of hockey operations, including scouting, development, coaching and operations to establish and optimize a modern, continually evolving approach.

?It?s an extraordinary honor to take on this role with one of the most historic franchises in Major League Baseball,? said Greenberg. ?Throughout my conversations with Scott, Chris Ilitch and the rest of the team with the Tigers,
it became clear that this organization is headed in a great direction with an incredible culture of development and innovation that I?m excited to be part of. Another constant message in those conversations was that Tigers fans want to see winning baseball deep into October. I?m excited to get to work with our front office on off-season and longer-term plans to make that our reality.?

Before his time in Chicago, Greenberg was an intern with the Pittsburgh Pirates (2006, 2008), Arizona Diamondbacks (2010) and Major League Baseball (2009-11).

A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Greenberg is a graduate of Columbia Law School (JD, 2011) and the University of Pennsylvania (BA, 2008).

Every once in awhile, our regular schedule gets interrupted as big news breaks. And today, it?s a good thing.

The end of the year brings us another change to the Detroit Tigers? organization. A move that has been long overdue.

The Tigers now have a new GM.

Yesterday, I blogged about the hiring of Jeff Greenberg. His background, his history and the skills he brings to the table. Most importantly, how he will improve the team.

If you didn?t read it, here is the link:

Now that you?ve read about him, what is your first impression of the hire?

What is your first impression about the hiring of Jeff Greenberg as the Tigers' GM?

I couldn't decide between 2 and 3. I'm not sure but I have to be a little optimistic since I really have no choice. The team has been so bad we have to have some kind of hope.

Tomorrow?s game will be the last one of Miguel Cabrera?s career.

He must wait 5 years in order to be eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame. That means 2029 will be his first year on the ballot.

It is widely expected that Miggy will be a first ballot Hall of Famer.

The Detroit Tigers, with the exception of Willie Horton and recently Lou Whitaker, have had a policy of not retiring player jersey numbers until they are inducted into Cooperstown.

Sixty players have worn #24 including Mickey Stanley and Travis Fryman.

But should that change now with Cabrera?s retirement? Or should #24 be left active, potentially for some other player to wear it over the next 5 years?

Should the Detroit Tigers retire Miguel Cabrera's #24 jersey before he's eligible for the Hall of Fame?

1. Yes, don't wait for the Hall of Fame vote.

2. No, wait until he gets inducted into the Hall of Fame.
