Tigers FO thread, Scott Harris Pres. of Baseball Ops,Tigers Hire Jeff Greenberg GM

You need 4/5 relievers who capitch in leverage one of whom is a closer..understand draft and develop is a 2 part equation..you draft then develop..and until they play productively in the majors you only completed 50% of the job..So where are the Tigers.

Are they better than Scott harris found them..or just a different version of the same thing..pushing off into the distance the answer based on version where you wait 5 years to find out like Al Avila tried and failed at..you tell me.

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

Since Scott Harris was hired less than 2 years ago, the Tigers have been regularly churning their roster. To the point where only 2 positional players remain in their same positions today – Jake Rogers and Javier Baez. One because of his performance, the other because of his contract.
Harris has emphasized that the Tigers are trying to build their core group of players as well as their foundation. A number of players have been on this roster – and a number of them have either returned to Toledo or left the organization.

But while we focus on the big names, there are a number of players who are sneaking into the lineup more often because they are performing consistently. Flying under the radar.
And they just may turn out to be part of that core.
Granted, their positions may change due to trades and call-ups. But I expect these 5 under-the-radar guys to be part of the next competitive Tigers team:

If she is giving proper credit, Greene, Carpenter, and Meadows were drafted and mostly developed under AA...just like Tork. Until the players that he selected develop, this is the list that means the most to me (100% Harris guys). Most of these guys are turds.

  • Matt Vierling
  • Zach McKinstry
  • Andy Ibanez
  • Trey Sweeney
  • Kenta Maeda
  • Shelby Miller
  • Sean Guenther
  • Justyn-Henry Malloy
  • Tyler Holton
  • Bryan Sammons
  • Brenan Hanifee

now she is claiming that the Tigers invented the idea of a reliever starting the game? The Tampa Bay Rays starting doing this in 2018. She'll say just about anything to prop up Harris and Co. 🤣 🤣

FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
Totally Tigers

We know that the overall success of a team is due to a variety of factors: the players, manager, coaches, mental strengths, strategies, etc. No one group gets the credit. It is truly a team effort.
The Tigers have played above .500 baseball since July 1st and they have taken most of the series they have played since then. They have won the 3rd most games in MLB since the All-Star break.

Today, let’s analyze one of these factors – the players. Which 5 would you say have been the MVPs of the roster during the months of July and August?
There’s 1 caveat: You cannot select a player who has been on the IL for a significant time during those 2 months. You also can’t select a player who was traded in July. This means that Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter and Parker Meadows are ineligible for consideration.
Others players who were just recently called up from Toledo (like Trey Sweeney) are also excluded from consideration.

So who would you pick? Give us your 5 candidates. Extra points for alphabetizing so that everyone reading them can compare the lists more easily.

THE NEW WAY TO PLAY.
Totally Tigers

Wow.
I keep wondering when I’m going to wake up from this wonderful dream. This impossible dream in which the Tigers played most of the season under .500 and then miraculously turned things around, reached .500 in mid-August and then had the best win-loss record since in all of MLB.
All while losing 4 of their 5 starting pitchers, trading away 4 veterans and having their most significant players on the IL.
Back in August, they were given a .2% of reaching the playoffs.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING.

Last week, Scott Harris gave his end-of-the-year press conference. And for many fans, the playoff memories are fading into the off-season.
Yes, he addressed several issues that are sensitive to fans’ souls.
I bet you can guess what they are.
If you are one of these fans, I implore you to wait before heading for that cliff edge. It’s because you can’t take Harris’ comments at face value.
There is nuance. There is diplomacy. There is context.
There was ambiguous wording.
Unlike his predecessor who said whatever came into his mind, Scott is a practiced speaker. You’ve had almost 2 years to get to know him and now understand that he is a guarded speaker. A diplomatic speaker.
A professional speaker.
And he’s never going to say anything that will be deemed controversial.
He’s an expert at saying just enough. But he’s never going to show his full hand until the action is complete.
Especially when the Tigers’ season just ended a mere 48 hours before the press conference.
So let’s dig into some of his statements, shall we?

GRADING THE TIGERS: PRESIDENT OF BASEBALL OPERATIONS.
Totally Tigers

Now that the season – and the playoffs – are over, this is the perfect time to reflect upon the 2024 year and grade players, management and Front Office. We’re going to divide the roster down by position in order to foster careful reflection and comments. Every day you’ll be asked to evaluate a small group of Tigers.
In most of the forthcoming blogs, there will be multiple opportunities to vote so please cast a vote for every poll you see on this page.
You will not be asked to grade players who have been traded or those with a very small sample size. We are also not offering a letter grade of E for the reason that anyone playing that poorly would have been released or sent down to the minors.
As you consider each player, we ask that you look at their entire skill set, not just hitting. Consider defense, speed, the ability to call a game and clutch ability.
Consider that the slash line is a more valuable indicator instead of just batting average and that a player’s role and position in the lineup are also factors. That defensive range and defensive runs saved (DRS) are better gauges than fielding percentage. And that ERA and WHIP tell more about a pitcher than wins and losses.

Today, it’s the President of Baseball Operations’ turn. Scott Harris.
Please grade him on the talent he collected, the coaches/managers/personnel he hired, the departments he developed/oversaw/overhauled and the overall coordination of the entire organization. Also consider any improvements he made in just less than 2 years and where the Tigers now sit in the competitive arena including the win-loss column and playoffs.
After voting, you may leave your rationale in the comment section. Three sentences only please.

Today, it’s the final grade of the season. What do you think of the Detroit Tigers organization as a whole?
Consider these factors in your grade:
roster
manager and coaches
Front Office leaders and department heads
2024 performance
farm system, player development, analytics, trainers and other medical/physical staff, other major departments
(Given that we still don’t know enough about the intentions of ownership, do not factor Ilitch Holdings (trust) into your considerations.)

THE FANS HAVE SPOKEN.
Totally Tigers

The dust has settled on the Detroit Tigers’ season and those in the media who cover the team have put out their grades for most of the players.
But really, how unbiased are their evaluations? We know that there is a sensitivity when it comes to criticizing players. In the past, the team has been known to “punish” some who speak the unvarnished truth. And of course, these same reporters are dependent upon player access and giving bad grades is not conducive to forming positive relationships with those players.
So what is better?
Asking fans. Serious fans. Knowledgeable fans. Lots of fans.
Like those of you reading this blog right now.
Who better than you?
Why work with 1 person’s opinion when you can have hundreds weighing in who have no ties to the organization and aren’t dependent upon others for their careers.
Isn’t that better?
Sure, there are fans who play their favorites. Some who just have never warmed up to a player. But when you have hundreds weighing in, you get a pattern. And if you’ve been reading this blog for awhile, you know how I love patterns.
The polls we’ve asked you to complete for the last week+ have served to emphasize the common beliefs and minimize the outliers. The results are, for the most part, a very accurate representation of how fans feel overall.
Below, I’ve divided the grading to show groups, followed by the percentage of fans who assigned that grade.
And the results are telling.
Overall, you’re tough on the players. There’s no grade inflation here. Quite the opposite.
Look at each grade and how many or how few players are listed for each.
Look at which category has the most players.
What does this all say about the team and what needs to be done to the roster?
After each category, read my quick observations about what each one says.

SATURDAY SURVEY.
Totally Tigers

Earlier this week, Detroit Tigers’ PoBO Scott Harris met briefly with the press, answering questions about payroll, a Tarik Skubal contract extension, Alex Bregman and Javier Baez.
Tiger fans were not thrilled. In fact, many read the comments as less than inspiring.
But Harris plays his cards close to the vest. He doesn’t give anything away. Even when he knows that fans really want to know the details on some of the team’s hottest issues.

For the record, he answered no questions about Skubal’s contract extension. Boras injected his own opinion. Nor did Scott explain why the Tigers are not pursuing (at the moment) Alex Bregman. As for Baez, he outlined what the Tigers need to see from him while adding qualifiers for what may happen at SS.
In the business world, it is said that the more you talk, the more leverage you lose. Identifying anything about your strategy gives others an advantage.

Harris’ predecessor, Al Avila, had problems keeping his mouth shut. And the results were reflected in his struggles to trade and sign free agents. Dave Dombrowski was very similar to Harris in keeping everything secret until transactions became official. He usually surprised us with moves no fans saw coming.

So how do you feel about Harris’ method of communicating?
How do you feel about Scott Harris' style of communication?

1. I understand and support the need for a lack of details.

2. He needs to give fans more details.

3. I miss Al Avila.
