Tigers vs. Angels game thread 8/26

Anytime you win a game when Miggy sits it's a great win. Not playing great baseball but we are finding ways to win games and that's what matters right now. We win the series against another wild card contender and Max pitched great. Very nice weekend for us.

Gotta say, Dirks, Prince, and Delmon stepped up today when we needed them too.

Leyland breathes a sigh of relief too I bet, he'd have been hammer in the press if we had lost with Cabrera on the bench.

Probably. Leyland definitely has his haters. I overheard a guy at the bar yesterday telling his buddy that Leyland is ruining Verlander right now because he makes him pitch at least 6 innings even when "he doesn't have it" that day. He said Leyland needs to yank him out in the 3rd or 4th inning to save his arm. He was serious too. He actually thinks managers should yank their aces if it appears like they might not have a good day.

Time to go root for the Mariners.

Naturally the White Sox missed King Felix is this series. I hope their ****ing luck runs out soon...

Ron just got in his car and turned the radio on right when Prince hit his homer!!!! He says hi to everyone and thanks for posting the line-up!!!!

You boys can thank me now or thank me later. My Tigers psychic/psycho vibes worked.

Got in the car for the drive home, XM radio with Dan and Jim, Dirks walks and Fielder goes yard.
Great win with Cabrera out, Scherzer with another dominating start,
Tigers win 5 - 2,
Scherzer wins his 14th,
TigersVictoryCigar.

Scherzer's final line: 7IP, 1ER on 4H, 2BB/9K...
last 14GS: 9-2, 2.88ERA, 30BB/115K in 90IP....has lowered ERA from 5.88 to 4.13...
Max rolled to the finish, retiring 17 of final 18 batters, 8 on Ks.
Scherzer is 4-0 with 2.25 ERA in August.

Scherzer's 9 K's gave him a new Tigers record of striking out at least 8 in 8 consecutive games, breaking Hall of Famer Hal Newhouser's record.

Tigers wrap up impressive 6-3 homestand with 5-2 win over the Angels. Off day tomorrow, then in KC for 3 starting Tuesday.
Tigers climb 11G over .500 for first time this year, beat Angels, 5-2. Scherzer superb again.
Papa Grande's ERA in non-saves is now over 4.00 - it's an even 3.00 in save situations.

Scherzer has struck out at least eight in eight consecutive starts. He is the first Tigers pitcher to do that since at least 1918. He also turned in his 11th start with at least nine strikeouts. That's the most games with at least nine strikeouts since Mickey Lolich had 15 of those games during the 1971 season.

As for Delmon;
Young is batting .313 (21-for-67) over his last 17 games, he hasn't shown much statistical power, with six doubles and a lone home run during that time. In terms of contact, though, he's connecting solidly on a more consistent basis than earlier in the year, and he's striking out at a lower rate. He has had back-to-back games with multiple extra base hits...had one game previously w/ multiple XB hits thru 114G.
Tigers official site

Dirks finished 2-3 + walk, RBI, scored 2R.
Since coming off DL, he's hitting .353 (68AB) with HR and 9RBI, 9BB/11K.

Post game Cabrera: I feel better. Hopefully feel well in Kansas City and play in the field.

Tigers pitching is leading way right now - team scored just 34R in 9G on homestand, but finished 6-3...team ERA is 2.23 last 11G.

Tigers now head to KC for three, before coming home for 6G w/ Chicago and Cleveland...
Tigers 7-1 vs. KC, but 6 of 8G decided by 2R or fewer.
Matchups for KC (all night games): Verlander vs. Mendoza (7-9, 4.26ERA), Sanchez v. Chen (9-10, 5.41) and Porcello v. Guthrie (2-3, 4.32).

.706 OPS, .301 OBP, -1.0 WAR.

Nothing decent about it, but hopefully he can stay semi-hot, we need production badly.
Since May 18th (84 games) he's hit .284 with a .743 OPS and 12 homers. That was before todays game with another homer. He had a slow start, but hasn't been as horrible as you make him out to be over the last 3 months.

.743 OPS for a DH is BAD. Delmon has sucked all season, but has sucked a little less lately. Hopefully he can continue to play better through this season and then we can say goodbye to him this offseason.

I'm not making him out to be anything, his stats speak for themselves.

And you said "season". If you meant last 3 months, that's what you should have said.

I get that you like Delmon, but you have to know if you say something like how he's quietly having a decent season, that someone was going to come along and correct you, especially with all the statistical data we have on the subject.

And Delmon would not seem anywhere near as terrible as he's been if he was hitting 8th like he should be, but he's been in the 5th spot and a DH, and frankly, there is no sugar coating how disappointing he has been.

Not saying he's great, just that he's the best option we have right now and hasn't been as horrible as some make him out to be on this board.

his numbers are right around his career numbers.

yes, and he's had a shitty career. a career slash line of .286/.318/.426/.744 with a wRC+ of 96 and a career total war of only 1.2 over just about 6-7 seasons MIGHT be semi-decent for a light-hitting middle infielder with good D, but its inexcusably abysmal for someone who is supposed to be good offensively at either DH or a corner OF spot while playing some of the worst defense on the planet, especially when this hack is hitting 5 or 6 most nights. I wont be happy till he's gone and stinking up some other team (please the white sox).

plus he hates the jews. and he grew that disgusting 70s pornstar 'stache.

Who should be our DH right now? So many of you guys bitch about him without giving a better option. Sadly, he's the best option right now. All he's done is hit close to his career averages. Not sure why the anger isnt directed at DD. Seriously, did you guys expect for him to suddenly hit .300 with 30 homers?

in the 5th spot, the first 4 months, anyone other than delmon, boesch or shinebox,

Maybe that's why DY is making way more than he's worth. He's filling out the lineup cards too. There isn't anyone on the bench or in the minors that I'd say are better options. I'm more upset with the upper management for Delmon playing than Delmon himself. Not like he's having a "down year" by his standards. Sadly, this team is worse without him.

I agree with this, and will be livid if he, Boesch, or raburn are on the roster in 2013.

and just posted something from yahoosports, delmon is the worst in production swinging at sliders....Slider: Delmon Young, -10.3 runs.

Again, who's a better option!?!?!

The fact we have no better options does not make Delmon suck any less, you can't make the excuse that because he's the best we have that it's been anywhere close to acceptable, it's not.

If you break a shoelace and then re-lace your shoe with dental floss, it may be the best option you have, but does not change the fact it's horrible at that job.

I could probably cut Delmon a little slack at times, but the honest truth is, I just don't like him. Never have, never will.

Also, Delmon is not at his career averages, he infact, has to go on a bit of a hot streak to get to them.

Which is just a reminder of how bad he was the whole first half.

And in the interest of fairness, Delmon is not the only guy who has sucked, Coke, Boesch, Raburn, Inge, Santiago...all have been dismal, the only difference is nobody id trying to defend them.
