Tigers vs. angels Game Thread Sept. 8

Tie no longer goes to the runner, Laird called out on a high pitch. it's hard enough for us to score runs we really don't need all the bad calls do we?

I'm going to have to go finish off the beer now it's really hard to watch this.

Jim Price inferred the Angels were stealing signs somehow, because of the 4 first pitch swings and XBH's.

Dunno if he's right or not, but if you know it's coming anyone can hit the fastball even if it's 99 or 100.

But they can hit the 90mph one much easier than the 100mph. The closer With the Reds doesn't fool anyone most of the time, but almost no one can hit him. I would guess that jv's fast balls are flattening out a bit.

With all the starters in the running for the cy young having some poor outings lately, I think Rodney actually has a chance at it.

It's so he can go further in games. Not many other pitchers can then throw 100 at 120+ pitches in. The problem is when you miss with your location like the Trout HR, hitters aren't going to miss it whereas you may be able to sneak it by them if it's 97.

Agreed.

So what happened to Below? Did I miss something? Is he on the DL?

Wow that's a large ball boy. He makes Prince Fielder look small.

He's not on the roster, and has not been for a month or more, so yeah, you must have missed something.

Angels now have five doubles, tying most allowed by JV in any game. Only the third time Verlander has allowed six extra-base hits in a game.

Verlander's home stats (coming in): 7-2, 1.70 ERA (13 GS), 100.2 IP;
Road: 6-5, 3.73 ERA (15 GS), 103.2 IP

I think it's all about arm motion and how well batters do or do not pick up the ball coming out of a pitchers hands, take villarreal for example he throws 96-99 and people are constantly late on him? Difference I suggest is hiding of the ball better during delivery and or deceptive arm motion.

I know he's not on the roster, but why?

He was sent down early August to make room for a fresh reliever, which turned out to be Putkkonen, and never got called back up since Smyly was recalled and Leyland decided he would be the long man.

Villarreal has late movement on his pitches also, same as Max Scherzer.

JV's problem might be he's not getting much movement on his FB when it's slower.

I'd have to check the charts later.
