Tigers vs. indians Game Thread Sept. 3

Heh, I didn't see Delmons HR, cause I was talking with some guy who was saying Verlander needs Tommy John or something, and by the time I looked up it was already gone.

Vid replay was cool though, he 9-ironed it.
How do you hit your 9 iron, cause that ball didn't go high at all?

more like a 3 iron.

And the emphasis on batting average with runner at 3rd less than 2 outs is exactly the problem. The good teams will sacrifice themselves to make sure that run scores. Shouldn't need to get hits to get that in.

Dumb.

hmm, Tigers are hitting .275 with a .765 ops with runners on, .271 with a .799 ops with runners in scoring position and 2 outs, and .283 with .793 ops with runners in scoring position in general; no where near that stat.

the 283 with RISP is 2nd in the AL. They have 161 RBI in 285 PA with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs including 32 sacrifice flies. They've scored a total of 173 runs with runners on 3rd less than two outs.

I don't play golf at all, the 9-iron was a generic term in reference to that is was on his shoe tops and he golfed it out, insert whatever club you want.

Just checking some of the top teams in the AL and the Tigers are pretty much right their with runner on 3 less than 2 outs. The Yankees have 36 sacrifice flies to Detroit's 32, but have a lower average and fewer runs scored in relation to PA. Chicago has 30 sacrifice flies but is batting 425. The teams that have the higher batting averages, seem to be the most efficient at scoring runners from first vs the ones that have more sacrifices.

Just an FYI, here is the pitch Boesch swung at in the first. It was waist high and over the outer half of the plate. It was a good pitch for Boesch to hit.

Ok, as long as we are playing with numbers relating to Boesch, I went back and took a look at his games over the last 6 weeks to see how he did when he jumped on the first pitch; I looked back as far as the 23rd of July, and stopped there simply because today's game was wrapping up.

He connected with the first pitch thrown to him 13 times. He fouled it off once (and eventually struck out), hit two singles, and flew out once. He hit 4 fielder's choices, grounded into 2 double plays, and grounded out twice. That's a batting average (and slugging percentage) of .154.

He didn't hit any sacrifice flies or bunts. Not sure if any of the fielder's choices moved a runner over to second or third (I wasn't looking for that). He didn't swing at the first pitch 38 times; 19 were strikes, 19 were balls. I counted 6 walks and 14 strikeouts, but I didn't find a pattern relating to swinging at the first pitch for that.

Basically, he did far worse than his total stats when he swang at the first pitch. The rest of the info could be interpreted a number of different ways.

It does appear that Boesch has been doing better recently when he looks at the first pitch, perhaps because he is thinking a bit about plate discipline, perhaps because he gets to see a pitch, which helps his timing.

"Hello, we're the Tigers. We're going to beat first place teams and teams in the hunt. Not so much against bottom feeders. We're going to do this just to PISS YOU OFF!"

Anyone feel like they are personally being told this...?

The only teams with losing records that they have below 500 records against are Cleveland and Seattle. Despite the sweep, they're still 7-4 against Kansas City.

Cumulatively, we are 29-28 against sub-500 teams in our league.

This board is tough to follow at times. The sky is always falling after a loss. We all know this team is flawed. Get over it and hope we can find some consistently. Last year was a fluke.

At this time last year, the Tigers were 73-61. They're 1 game off their pace from last year.

Yeah wish that was a bit better, but obviously that means we play pretty well against teams over .500. In the past I've heard plenty of people complain that we don't beat enough good teams and only beat the bad teams.

Tigers were starting off a hot streak at this point last year, after playing well in the second half. We have been more up and down this year, and we have the White Sox right there with us. Last year this division really faded on us in the second half.

Hey wudda know the white soxs went home and beat teams their supposed to beat and regain the lead. shocking.

I'm sure it makes White Sox fans feel better that they can beat Minnesota but are 4-10 against the team they are fighting for the division. FWIW the White Sox are 4-8 against the Royals.

They are also in 1st place, which dampens the sting considerably.

And their in 1st place again all by themselves because we couldn't beat some triple A guy who was 0-3 with an ERA north of 5, This team is frustrating.
