You can post all the damn stats you want the facts are the bases were loaded and the Tigers had a chance to break this game wide open.. A young weak hitter swung at the first pitch and bounced into a DP... Inning over and a failure on his part to help the team.. Every situation is different in baseball and there is a time to swing at the first pitch and time not to..... Lets all move on... We are not going to change anyone mind.. I am not going to mention it again... But we all know certain guys have the green light and certain guys should not have the green light. I respect everyone opinions on it either way...

What difference does it make if he hits a double play on the 6th pitch vs the 1st? Boesch isn't exactly young. He's 27 and in his 3rd season. Taking a fastball for the sake of taking the first pitch doesn't make sense. Why automatically put yourself down 0-1?

Also, he never compared Boesch to Hamilton, you guys did that.

He used Hamilton as an example of first pitch swinging. He never made a correlation between the two.

Argue against his point of you want, but don't put words in his mouth.

And yeah, Boesch, Hamilton, anyone....should swing at a pitch if it looks good to them, even if it's the first pitch.

You are failing in applying any real strategy. The problem is that Boesch has had close to no success at all swinging at the first pitch this season. He has had some SPECTACULAR failures doing just that, and he has shown no discernment at all most of the season in picking up pitch location. That's one of the reasons he is batting .197 on first pitches he hits. Now, plug all of this into the at-bat we were discussing, when he swung at something he couldn't do anything with.......

Nothing... But the pitchers pitch count is driven up and you have 6 pitches for a chance at a wild pitch or passed ball which would score the run..

So the only pitch in this AB that was a strike was the first pitch and Cabrera got himself out by passing on that pitch and going out of the strike zone. The best pitch he saw was the first pitch. Should've swung.

I think the point you're missing is Boesch is terrible all the time. He's not going to become a .290 hitter if he starts taking a few pitches.

The count is irrelevant, Boesch does not see/track pitches well, that's why he's a shitty hitter, not because of a lack of patience.

Why is swinging at the first pitch bad? Sometimes the best pitch you'll see is the first pitch. Josh Hamilton swings at the first pitch more than anyone. Seems to work well for him.

Using this IS an example of comparing Hamilton to Boesch on the subject we are talking about, whether you follow that or not, MiThumb.

Good strategy means juggling more than one concept at once. I would say that arguing that you should always swing at the first pitch if it looks good to you is an example of not applying any strategy. There are other factors, like recognizing your own abilities to discern what you are good at, and what your bad habits are. One of Boesch's bad habits, imo, is swinging at first pitches; it almost never yields anything good.

He may not be that young, but he also isn't very well developed when it comes to strategical thinking. He just showed that on the base path as well. If that strike was right down the middle, or where he could easily drive it somewhere, then it would make sense to swing at it. Given the wildness of the pitcher beforehand, it made more sense to just leave it alone, since he couldn't do anything with it; it might have been called a ball, for all we know.
